Tuna Bites and happy hour drinks
    Virginia R.

I went to Ballyhoos for the first time last night. We were greeted and sat quickly. The server was nice and attentive. We ordered happy hour drinks and tuna bites to start. Sports were on the tv's and live music played. We ordered shrimp and burgers as well. Everything was delicious and came out fast. Side note: The restaurant lets dogs sit with their owners, which I think is amazing. They also have lots of games like jinga, ping pong, corn hole, and foosball outside and under their tent. I highly recommend and I will be back. Seems like a great locals spot.

We stopped by Ballyhoos on Sunday to get some food and to watch the game. This is such a fun place to spend a Sunday afternoon. The food is good and the atmosphere is lively. They have raffles for prizes that are absolutely free. They have just about every game that you can imagine on their multiple televisions. The Star of the show was definitely the Hot Wings. They came out piping hot and they were delicious. We opted for the hot sauce and we enjoyed them very much. Check out Ballyhoo's, you'll be happy that you did and you can rest assured that you are supporting our local restaurant community.

Attended a weeknight work function here, 3.75 overall. Liked the outdoor space with paved covered patio, bar, and lots of green space plus seating. Perfect for the charity cornhole tourney, especially given the "big kid" appetizers of fruit, cheese, chips/cheese dip, chicken and burger sliders. Fair amount of indoor/temperature controlled space too. Gender specific bathrooms, daily specials and a stage for live music. Parking close to entrance can be a chore due to shared lot.

Sweet potato tots and half pound Peel and Eat Shrimp

Stopped by on a Friday evening for a friends get together while in town. It's funny how many times growing up that I was in this shopping center yet definitely didn't have a spot like this. Introduced my husband to some East coast on this trip. I had the shrimp. No longer my favorite after having my seasoning boiled into the seafood down South. The tots could have been cooked long. The crush ratio was off if you know what they should take like. The service for a Friday Evening mid evening left a lot to be desired. We had to work to get his attention most of the evening. The all you could eat crab legs were a good price compared to most local spots. The feel of the restaurant was my favorite part. The outdoor space was plentiful. Tons of space for folks of different groups. Live music. I'd go back really just got the atmosphere not for service.

When you walk in Ballyhoos it has a dive bar feel to it but I love it. Casual dining. We had a great time. And the food was Excellent. Shrimp cocktail are nice size shrimp. They even had lumpia. My friends drink was really good. She let me take a sip. They did not have it on the menu but I got a mocktail, Pineapple with sprite. It was so nice of them to make for me and I liked it so much I drank 3 of them. The bathrooms could be a little cleaner. Pretty good parking. I would say a great place to meet friends and have a good time.

This latest stop in Virginia Beach came after 32 hours of travel and almost no sleep. I walked in right as they opened, sat on the patio, and was taken care of immediately. Fans kept the air moving and the outdoor heat manageable. The meal was exactly what I expected; delicious, filling and satisfying; the service matched the quality I have counted on for decades. If you are in Virginia Beach and want a reliable place for a good meal and a drink, Hot Tuna still delivers.

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was perfect. We were seated in a booth near the live band, and it created such a fun, relaxing vibe. The dim lighting gave the restaurant a cozy, intimate feel that was perfect for a night out and really added to the overall ambiance. Before our entrées arrived, we couldn't stop eating the focaccia. It was warm, fresh, and so flavorful that we immediately wished there had been more. We also ordered the beef kebabs with chimichurri sauce, and they were incredible. The beef was tender, and the bright, herb-filled chimichurri brought everything together perfectly. Honestly, I could have used another serving of both the bread and the sauce! By the time our main courses arrived, we were already pleasantly full, but that didn't stop us from enjoying every bite. My husband is a creature of habit--ever since our first date, he usually orders the same or very similar dishes. The only reason he branches out is because I love cooking and introducing him to new flavors, or he'll happily steal a bite from my plate when we go out. This time, he ordered the steak with mashed potatoes, and it was cooked beautifully. The steak was tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the creamy mashed potatoes. Between the delicious food, the live music, and the inviting atmosphere, this restaurant made my birthday celebration even more memorable. It's the kind of place that's perfect for a special occasion or a romantic date night, and I'd gladly come back again.

I didn't frequent Peabody's since I have never been a person who loves dancing or DJs. Also, I was outside of Peabody's target demographic of 18-24 year-olds. This was during my "bitter chick rock" phase that still rears its head now and then, and one of my favorite bitter chick bands was L7! I saw their show at Peabody's on April 15, 1997. It was a great venue for this raw, bitter, loud band with a house packed and standing room only of fans trying their best to make a mosh pit. I guess Hole was my second favorite bitter chick band. Back to the L7 show. Classified as grunge, punk, and metal, I think L7 is more chick punk. Their guitarist was unavailable this night, and they replaced her with a local Va Beach chick guitarist who did a great job. The locals recognized her, I didn't. Smoking was allowed inside, and this audience was pretty aggressive for the times, with a lot of college aged guys wearing backwards baseball caps. That's fine, until the guys use their ballcaps as weapons to poke me in the forehead and face to try to keep me out of their mosh pit making range. The goal of the audience was to get to stage front. The audience even resorted to using cigarette lighters to burn each others clothes. Who does this? This show was during "The Beauty Process" tour and the setlist was great with songs from previous CDs including "L7" and other previous music. Par for the course, during "Cat-O-Nine Tails," a guy in leather bondage was brought on stage and then whipped with a whip by Donita, the lead singer. I'm confident this was just a show, and the poor guy wasn't hurt. "The Masses are Asses" is another L7 tune I like. Why no fifth star? The bouncers were interesting. They waited for patrons to make their way to the stage and for the most part, escorted the patron to the door - kicking nearly each one out. The crowd was "elbow to elbow" making it clear it was difficult to just take an overly rowdy and rough patron from the center of the crowd to kick them out. Still, the bouncers were sophomoric, and should have managed the crowd better. I'm happy to have seen L7, I'm happy my party were hurt, and I'm happy Peabody's provided a sizeable venue for an alternative show in the late 90s!
