The process started at the end of January. The initial estimate went well, pretty standard stuff. The original date for the job was pushed back due to weather. The second date was also pushed back, but no one bothered telling me they were behind due to weather, so they cost me an extra days vacation. March rolls around and they finally get to my roof. The job was done in 2 days but an uncovered dumpster sat in my driveway for 4 days blowing plastic trash all over my neighborhood. I've picked up over a gallon jug worth of nails. Up to this point I still hadn't contacted Balken, my primary dissatisfaction started when I actually got on top of the house and saw gaps where water could get to my chimney. The flashing looks sloppy and it is wavy. I emailed them the Saturday before Memorial Day and they still hadn't returned my call or sent an emailby the end of Tuesday. So I emailed them again expressing my disappointment. I got a return call at 6:42a the next morning!!! Who calls people that early? Heather was rude, interrupted me multiple times when I spoke and it was obvious that her call was a passive aggressive "ASAP callback". They came out next day, put more gobs of caulk on my roof and called it a day. I'm sick at the money I've spent and the cherry on the crap sundae they served me is all the nails I keep finding in my yard, car tires, and lawn equipment. Avoid this place at all costs. Contracted with balken to repair metal roof on a 8x12 utility building I stressed with both the office man and the estimator how important it was that the site be cleaned up especially picking up all screws and nails. (Easily done with a magnet.) Both promised that this would be done Work was done on 2-13-23. The 2 man crew showed up at 8:50am. I told them not to leave any screws or nails on the ground. The foreman left one man to tear off damage which he did he did in 2 hours The foreman returned @ 11:30am both worked for about 1/2 hour 2 hour lunch break returned 1:30 pm worked until 3pm 6 man hours total (not including the 2 hour lunch break) During the course of the repair they removed both the soffits and trim boards They started packing up before soffits and trim were replaced saying trim was not included in contract. They had removed it but refused to reattach it. Again I told the workers, make sure to pick up any screws and nails. They left 5 minutes later I went over the jobsite with a big magnet and found about 50 screws/nails, some were 30 feet away. Not dropped near the building, but apparently intentionally thrown. Not very happy with work left undone (While the trim was not specifically included in the contract they removed trim boards and and should have reattached them. They also carried off part of the trim I would need to fix it myself. I originally asked for an estimate for complete repair and cleanup. Apparently the office man and the estimator ignored these requests. 2-27-23 1:30 pm I went by Balken in Swannanoa to pay the balance Nearly $400 in "unforeseens" had been added on. Turns out the estimator had measured wrong. 30' of 2x4 was estimated but 50' was required. 40% error ? I had new 2x4s right in the building they could have used. Instead they they took a 2 hour lunch to go to HD or Lowes. Then Balken padded the bill with extra labor and materials. They gave small discount for the nails and screws. Now 2 flat tires later I'm not happy with the Balken job I cannot recommend balken, they lie to your face, measure incorrectly, pad the bill and do mediocre work and cleanup read more

TERRIBLE JOB! A few years ago, I hired Balken to replace my gutters and downspouts. Several months later, I noticed a water issue in my basement that got worse as time went by. Since I had new gutters and downspouts, I assumed the leak was from an old oil tank buried in the yard that was seeping rainwater into the basement, so I hired a contractor to take out the tank and fix the problem.To my shock, he showed me the old oil tank was sealed and that Balken had run an underground line from a new downspout into a disused broken clay waste pipe that was sixty years old and completely blocked, backing water up into my basement whenever it rained. It cost me thousands to repair the damage to the foundation and my basement that Balken did. read more

I contracted with Balken to install kick-out flashing at the intersection of the gutter and the chimney. It did not work because it was not installed properly. I contacted the company via email asking for reimbursement because I would have to find someone else to fix it. Ms. Balken called me and suggested that there could be other issues such as roofing or flashing problems, that I knew wasn't true based on the path of water running down the chimney. She also said that she would do further research with a gutter specialist. She did send a partial refund. I reviewed the contract and found that the flashing was not installed per the contract language. I notified Ms. Balken via email and no response was received. Later, I found a reputable roofing company that installed a proper kick-out and I don't have anymore problems. read more

We live at Craggy View Cottages in Swannanoa NC and had Balken come out and check our Vent Boots and Roof. Tyler inspected the complete roof and all vents, bootsand tube lights.. He said we are good for a few more years and should have no problems. We loved his honesty and professionalism. I will recommend Balken Roofing to our Homeowners Board for future work.. Called Balken for an estimate on a commerical roof. They came out to inspect and everything was fine, but it's 3 weeks and 2 phone calls later and I'm still waiting on my estimate. Ridiculous. read more
