I have heard of Balkan from my office mates several times and when I asked them what they serve its always just : "uhh, meat."
Not a big fan of red meat, it took me some convincing to eat there today and I'm glad I did.
Situated on Perea st. (which is lined with some of the lesser foodie favorites in Legaspi), Balkan is just a block away from Makati CBD and Ayala Center. With its proximity to many companies and offices, you'd think that the place would fill up pretty quickly.
I'm not sure if it's just the expensive price tag (common around the area, most dishes range around 200-350) that keeps people away from the place. But I'd rather chalk it up to the unfamiliarity of the Filipino palate to Yugoslavian flavors, or even the idea of what Yugoslavian food really entails..
And just as my office mates said, meat is predominant in their food. Stuffed meat, to be exact. I ordered the gourmet burger and is really just a normal burger with lettuce, tomato but the patty is stuffed with cheese and bacon. Absolutely tasty, and the meat is juicy without being too oily. The accompanying side of fries are also crispy without being burnt, not turning soggy from too much oil.
I don't understand why Balkan is not easily filled to the brim with people-- but I'm also thankful for it, because I can visit it more often without dreading having to line up for a taste of their meat. read more
