Omg I loved my experience here. Visited for lunch with coworkers during black business week. The guy was so nice he let us try some of the different hot options. Everything was so good I got a little of it all since the hot food is $9 per pound. Food was very flavorful and fresh, not very spicy. Also got beignets for dessert which were also 10/10 and came with chocolate, strawberry and caramel sauce. Ambiance was chill, not too many ppl sitting down and eating.

Amazing! I've been wanting to try this place forever! I haven't had oxtail before, and it did not disappoint! I drove to Bala's Bistro because I've heard nothing but good things about this place. It was worth the drive, and everything was warm when I got home. The oxtails were delicious and fell right off the bone. The stew is vibrant and full of flavor. The jollof rice was a little stiff, but it was still delicious. I think I'll get more vegetables next time. The oxtails come with any side you want. I also ordered the meat pies to go. They are very filling and tasty. I'll be eating this for lunch and dinner. The honey hibiscus juice is what I love the most. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but I want to try more new things this year, and it was surprisingly good. I can't wait to go back and try more of their house-made juices! Give this spot a try. You won't be disappointed.

bala's has a MASSIVE menu! i typically choose something from the hot serve display; however, they have a menu full of fresh, cooked to order options as well. also, DO NOT sleep on those slushees they have behind the counter. that hibiscus slush gets me right every time! the staff here if very helpful and infinitely knowledgeable about what you should get if you're having trouble. i wish they offered more points per dollar but I'm still buying from them lol

I tasted this food at an event someone hosted and ordered from here. I was like I have to go visit them. I looked them up and I was like wait they in Whitehaven. I literally dislike leaving my neighborhood but I found strength to carry on (not to mention I've driven out there 4 times now). I ordered the oxtails, cabbage, meat pies, curry chicken, rice, blackeye peas (which are my favorite), fufu and soup, grilled salmon and mostly everything . I get to these restaurants and can't stop myself. Listen everything was good. Literally everything. Customer service is always on point. Food is always hot. The only critique I have is that I don't like they weigh the food at $9 a pound because all their food is heavy. My plate was like 30 bucks. My total that day was like $112. I think they should reconsider the amount per pound. Other than that I love the food. Not the cutest building at all but hey it gets the job done.

This was my 1st time trying authentic African food and boy was I excited. Ive heard good reviews about this establishment and I agree!! Whenever my best friend and I go places we kinda just order several things and share, we eat family style. Cant remember what I tried but I didnt have any complaints. The cheesecake was vegan, it had a coconut taste. Not bad but not my thing.. possibly because I make creamcheese cheesecakes. The caramel cake was a regular cake n was pretty good. Definitely coming back, gotta try some kinda soup n fufu.. Yes, I recommend.

SO I decided to give them another try. This time I ordered vegan dishes from the menu. I was impressed with the vegan quesadilla- very tasty! I only complaint is the saltiness. It could be a me thing but I don't like super salty food. The vegan quesadilla is something I will definitely order again! The sweet plantain I didn't care for- as a Caribbean, I love naturally sweetened plantain and these weren't it. The vegan wrap- I'm not sure if I didn't care for it because the vegan quesadilla was the "star" of this order. It wasn't bad but it wasn't my favorite thing either. The veggie roll pretty decent. The orange sauce it pretty good however I DID NOT believe it is vegan! I am trying to keep away from dairy because I have a reaction to it and when I tried this sauce- I had a slight reaction. Again, this is a personal assumption.

If you want true authentic African and American cuisine this is the place to go! You can order off the menu or from their ready made food. Either option is great and you will be served hot and fresh food. I went during Memphis Black Restaurant Week and I am glad that I did! I had the house ginger juice. It is made in house and you can taste the fresh - raw ingredients with every sip. For food I ordered from the ready made food. You can put as much food on it as you would like and then they weigh it and your amount is based on that. It's $9 per pound. I had the jerk chicken, jasmine rice, collard greens, and peanut butter stew. It was all good and well seasoned. They do have a small dining area if you would like to eat in. So, the next time you are in the Whitehaven area you should definitely stop in.

Well, well, well...here we are a year later. It's black restaurant week in Memphis yet again and my first stop was none other than Bala's bistro! I'm so happy that they've expanded and got a new spot! Decided to actually go inside and take a look instead of ordering and picking up food this time. When I went inside, I went for the buffet which is currently priced at $9/lb. There is lots to choose from at the buffet and of course you can order from the menu as well. They have a large variety of food, but I went with some more African cuisine. I've been wanting to try fufu for quite some time, so I went for the egusi, vegan soup kandja (okra stew), fufu and fried plantains. I already knew what the okra stew was like because I had it before, but that egusi hit different! Soooo rich in flavor. Paired with the fufu, it was such a delight! Everything was really good and I'm pretty sure I'll be paying them another visit. They've yet to disappoint me.

I ate here before Before they moved to a new location it was pretty cool the boom boom sauce uhhh naw not for my taste the salmon wrap tasted too fishy for me properly because I'm pregnant my taste buds is everywhere but I would eat here again I think both wraps was $24 nice size but make sure you get your sides I didn't I orders Fry's and plantains didn't get my plantains but one order of Fry's next time I will get the chicken wrap and probably wings they look promising!!!

When I say the food is amazing, it's just that! I've been here many times over the past three years. The food is always fresh, seasoned and fragrant. You get a big portion for the price. Bala (the owner & chef) is delightful as well. I usually do takeout because the dining area is small. They can get crowded, so be sure to order online or call in ahead to order.

Bala's Bistro has been my favorite place since finding out about it two years ago. Whenever someone ask me for a new and exciting place to try I always take them here or order it in for us. Bala specialize in Senegalese food & adds an American twist to his menu. My personal favorite is the seafood stew & house salad add chicken. I'm a bit of a stale eater sometimes but whenever I'm looking to add spice to my diet I always order form here. Friendly staff and friendly owner- it's always a good thing when you see the owner inside of the establishment cooking your food hisself or watching over his staff at all times. A very hands on man. My son is half Senegalese so I try to incorporate food from there into his diet despite us living in MS/Memphis. He enjoyed the seafood stew a lot (and he's only one). Great prices, fast service and if you choose to sit in amazing music. read more

We ordered delivery - and everything tasted fabulous!! They have such a variety of menu items. And Every Single Item that we ordered was delicious. Some absolutely amazing vegan options. (and I'm a meat-eater - but son is vegetarian) The Jollof Rice was delish; Okra Stew (with Seafood) was yummy; Vegan Saka Saka (braised spinach) was really good; and Vegan Maafe (peanut-butter-stew) - also good. Did I mention all of the options?!? I would have given a 5-star rating except for the delivery containers. They were a bit precarious - and several items items had spilled into the bags. When I tell you this man can cook. This man can cook! Whenever I want to spoil myself from a hard week of working I always go to Bala's for literally anything off the menu. I had the African food the American food. I literally try to order something new every time I go because it's so good. The lamb is phenomenal though ask for spicy you won't be disappointed and there's this quinoa type grain that he makes I think is called Attike or something along the lines and he has this pickled cucumber and tomato topping on it I fell in love! I get that with every meal and also an order plantains. This is truly a hidden gem of Memphis. If you want some food that's gonna stick to you and not make you hungry in a couple hours this is the place. read more

Yum yum yum!! Food was amazing. I had kabobs with a few of the available sauces to dip with not that you needed any the steak was awesome. Side we're all really good but I have to admit I wasn't super well versed on what all of the were but on I will be a bit more adventurous on my next visit. read more

Tried fufu for the first time with one of the vegetarian stews. It was delicious. The cornbread was extra sweet and moist too. I want to eventually try everything from the buffet lol. The chicken wings are party sized which I didn't expect for the price but they were still fried crisp and tasted good. Will definitely be going often as it close to where I live and I love anything African! read more

I ordered the oxtail to go, and drove all the way to Cordova with it. It was still the perfect temperature! The oxtail was seasoned so well and was nice and tender. It had a little more fat than I would have liked but still no complaints. I enjoyed the vegetables and the corn was cut so conveniently. Everything met my expectations. I'd highly recommend! I've been waiting for a restaurant serving authentic African food and I've finally found it. We had the lamb stew and the oxtails with fufu, jollof rice, spinach and plantains. The food was delicious and plentiful. My only complaint would be that there are items that are available to order, but not on the menu. It was only after I saw photos on Yelp that I knew to ask about the oxtails and spinach, neither of which were on the menu. Great food in an unsuspecting location, but worth the trek across town. read more

Ate at Bala's last night after reading a review in a local paper. This little hole in the wall by the airport is amazing! We had both vegan and meat pies, curry goat stew, a chicken Maffe which is a peanut dish, chicken Yassa has a bunch of veggies and the jollo rice - everything was so tasty! Don't let the location fool you. It might appear closed but just walk up there open. Clean, inviting restaurant. Great music and customer service. Food cooked freshly prepared and fast. The food. Everything we ordered was fresh and amazing. The seasonings the portions are on point. Prices are very reasonable and again portions are huge. Great place hands down. You won't be disappointed. My wife and I ate at Bala's Bistro as we were passing through Memphis. They serve both American and and traditional African. Neither of us had ever eaten African food per se so we were unsure what to expect. I got the vegan Fataya vegetable pies and the vegan kimchi wrap. Both were excellent. I got the plantains as my side and they were very well cooked. The best I've had for a while. My wife got the Yassa with chicken. She enjoyed hers too. They don't skimp on portions and I thought good value for the amount of food. In addition to the food, the young woman who wired the pick up counter was very nice and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. Was very happy and had a big smile on here face the entire time I was in the restaurant. Definitely five stars as far as I'm concerned. read more

Very delicious food, we were in town visiting Graceland and wanted to try some local food but the restaurant we wanted to go to was closed, so we decided to go and try Bala's bistro. From some other reviews we knew that the bistro is not in the best looking neighborhood but we still wanted to try it and I am glad we did - the flavors were superb!!! We ordered vegan saka saka, peppered goat curry, vegan kimchi wrap and vegan fataya. Every single dish was full of flavor and we felt that it was hard to stop eating . Service was great and we even had a chance to say hi to the chef and thank him for such wonderful food. Wish we were living locally bc we would have been here very often definitely try it if you are looking for more then just BBQ and biscuits and gravy read more

A friend saw Bala's Bistro on Instagram and suggested we try the African food. I am so glad he did! I love global cuisine so I looked at the menu online in eager anticipation. Lots of African options and American choices, too. With the help of the knowledgeable staff, I ordered the Shrimp and Grits which included sausage in the rich roux for a very satisfying entree!! I have eaten that dish in many places and this version was closest to an etouffe. Had plantains and veggies as sides. $15 for lots of food. Very good deal! I have leftovers for lunch. A simple store front restaurant with fresh and inspired food. Going back to try the traditional African peanut soup with a collard green twist. The less adventurous can try the hamburgers and wings. read more

The toppings were not cohesive as well if that makes sense. It seems like it was thrown together versus being one cohesive dish. The price point is decent. You get bang for your buck. I am glad that this establishment is in this community and I look forward to going back trying more menu items!

If hummingbirds ever open a restaurant, this would probably be their house drink. The cornbread muffins were an adventure of their own. They were very dry, spongy, and unusually sweet -- almost like someone confused cornbread with dessert. Imagine expecting cornbread and getting something closer to candy. That's the closest description I can give. The atmosphere didn't help the situation either. The vents above the dining area looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a while, the walls felt bland and lifeless, and several tablecloths were torn. Along the bottom trim where the wall meets the floor, it looked like there was some serious wear and possible moisture damage going on. After waiting long enough and tasting what we had, we decided to call it. I spoke with the manager, who did apologize and told us not to worry about the bill, which I appreciated.
