That episode in my life left me with a phobia of the dentist (to this day the smell still gets me), as well as an occasional recurring dream of the dentist holding up the scariest cuddly toy of all time above me whilst I was knocked out by the gas. So, when I recently ruptured my Achilles and had to go in for surgery, I was (hopefully) understandably a little bit nervous, and more than a little hopeful that I wouldn't come away from my second stay in hospital with any lasting psychological scarring. I entered St Andrews at 6.55am, reported to the extremely friendly reception staff and was admitted into the hospital and taken up to my room. Happily my private health insurance warranted me a private very spacey room, where I was prepped up for surgery by more very friendly nurses. After Surgery I woke in recovery and after talking jibberish about Harvest Box nuts to a nurse for a couple moments, passing out, waking up this time slightly more coherently, and being given the all clear I was returned to my room and immediately handed a delicious ham and salad sandwich, but more incredibly - a small Dixie Cup of delcious Golden North ice cream which I think stands as probably the best thing I've ever eaten. The following night and morning passed in a blur of medication, hourly obs, some actually quite tasty hospital food, visits from family and friends - but the enduring memory I have is that of the kindness of the nurses. No matter what hour of day or night they were there, and not just there in a token kind of way. In the end I shouldn't have worried about leaving St Andrews with psychological scarring - all I left with, was a repaired achilles (and a sweet moon boot) and a couple new friends.

How can you not give a service that saves lives five stars and the Red Cross have been doing since…read moreforever. I first came here as a kid with my Mum who would donate whole blood once every three months. Things have changed now and you can donate plasma once a month now. You can even keep track of there mobile services that travel all over Adelaide metropolitan area. I have donated ever since I was able, this being the ripe old age of 16. The wonderful volunteer staff, all of who average around 70 years young, will seve you a treat for your service at the end of your donation. This includes a very generous allowance of a Coopers Pale Ale, but they have soft drinks and juices. Get them on a good day and you can get yourself a sandwich or a piece of cake. This depends on what has been prepared for the day. I can never go past the cheese and biscuits though.

When you consider that a single donation can potentially save three lives it becomes all the more significant. Giving blood will take around one hour of your time, no financial outlay and your donation may mean there are three people walking around happy and healthy, thanks to you. Once you've donated, your own blood volume will be completely restored within 24 - 48 hours. Whether you blood type A, B, O or AB, all blood groups will be a match for someone in need. Parking can be tricky in the city but there is some parking set aside for donors. You need to make an appointment to give blood and the website is the best way to do that. After navigating the car park relatively easily, I was met at the lifts by an extremely helpful volunteer who helped my find my way to my appointment. It was very modern and simple to get to where I needed to be with text messages to help along the way! Well done to all the staff there doing an amazing job all things considered

All the joyous memories of sitting in waiting rooms for the whole night, being treated by amatuer doctors and palmed off to other people/areas and just the whole public health system in general. Now my partner and I can experience the almost high life with private hospitals and good treatment. He came here with a severe knee knock from a collision with a goal post, and he unexpectedly got seen straight away before he had barely sat down, treated by an experienced knowledgeable understandable doctor and fixed up properly and sent on his merry way. Too easy huh? Why can't all hospital experiences be like this? Oh wait I pay a fortune for it, that's why.

And what did ever happen to all the emo kids who used to hang at the malls balls? I guess they're street preachers now.. No matter the reason, I enjoy giving blood. Not only do you get a comfy chair and a lovely person bringing you drinks, but you get food after! The new centre feels like an airport, with it's high ceilings and modern interior. I especially like the red and white used throughout, and tiny "cell shaped" tiles used on the toilet wall emphasise the blood theme. I don't donate as often as I should. But when I do, a short walk down Grenfell street to Haigh's in Adelaide Arcade is always a tempting reward for my generosity.

A great time to donate is before work; it's generally quieter and after the donation you can read the paper and grab a snack from the great range of refreshments to make sure you're feeling A1 before you start the day! This place is a bit of a lifesaver - I don't tend to go to 'the doctor' so this centre which is…read morejust down the road from me is perfect. I have bad heat intolerance so only tend to be on the move very early in the morning or later in the evenings in the warmer months so the hours of operation suit me down to the ground. I did some damage to my elbow last year (shattered one of the bones and so the ligaments and muscles weren't my biggest fans) and so I went to see a doctor because it became VERY sore which worried me. I was x-rayed but when it showed nothing, because of my obvious pain and discomfort, the Dr took me in to have an ultrasound done and lo and behold, my pain was explained. He was so very interested and caring...such a rare thing for a doctor to have in this 'time is money' world we now live in. The only complaint I have had with this Med Centre has been the attitudes of the females on the phones and on the reception - I know it is busy there, and some people can test one's patience, but every patient is a customer and really needs a smile and a helping hand when they've come to see a doctor.....but most of the people I have dealt with there have been really very good...but, of course, we just all have our 'off' days. This is the only medical centre I will go to - and happily. ;)

Adelaide Day Surgery obviously does a variety of day surgery procedures for private patients. You…read morecan go here without private health insurance if you can afford to pay the fee's for the venue, surgeon and anaethetist prior to your surgery. It was purpose built not that long ago so it is nice and new on the inside with all the features to make your stay more comfortable. They definitely get through the workload quicker than the hospitals. They offer opthamology, oral surgery, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric, plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. In and out in a day and all in nice facilities. Worst part is the parking. There are only 2 drop off / pick up parks out front and very minimal parking other than paid in a high priced city car park. Make sure you have plenty of coins with you in case you are lucky enough to get a street park as it will be ticket parking too and limited time.

All of the stars! This has got to be the best doctor's clinic I've ever been to. Not the sort of…read moresentence that gets used often, but darn it - it's true! I'm willing to come down here from the Northern suburbs because I know I will get well looked after. The reception staff are friendly and helpful and all the doctors I've seen (which is most of them since I just take available appointment times rather than see one doctor regularly) have been excellent. They are really attentive, take the time to listen to you and make sure they get the full story. No hasty prescription writing to bustle you out of the door or ordering of unnecessary tests. Appointments do tend to run overtime - pretty standard for any GP though - and I would put it down to the doctors being thorough. The waiting room is worth a mention too; plenty of chairs and couches and a big area for kids with plenty toys appropriate for different ages.
