My favourite thing about this place is their righteous brownies. They come in two sizes: huge…read more(4.50) and not-so-huge (2.50) and are filled with chopped walnuts. Brownies, for me, are best when made with walnuts and Cool Beans does not skimp! In addition to the flag-ship brownies, CB sells brioche of various size, cookies and pastries, wood-oven baked breads (all sourdough, I was told), Flammenkuchen/pizza, and a few different types of sandwiches. When I was there the other day (buying my brownie), I noticed the proprietor piling onto a veggie burger a generous dollop of guacamole. Nice. -side of greens came on the plate as well. Tea and scones are now also on the menu. C.B. have quite a compilation of lovely china. Tea tastes better out of a dainty cup detailed with roses, for sure. Cool Beans, run by super chill folk from the Netherlands, if I'm not mistaken, has a groovy vibe and aims to please. Smells wafting from the wood-oven, located just before the entrance of the Markthalle, are a sure-fire draw. Business folk looking for lunch, tourists ambling by and those, like me, who are fans of Basel, would do well to pop into the Markthalle and sample the fare of Cool Beans. I wasn't able to locate the CB website, however, they do have a (not-very-often-updated) Facebook page. Have a gander: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cool-Beans-Markthalle-B%C3%A4ckerei/162035154003176?sk=timeline **no pizza on Friday **long shopping days: Thursday and Saturday C.B. is open until 9.30pm I tried entering the opening hours on the business page, but repeatedly received an error message. Because the hours of operation vary somewhat from day to day, I'm going to post them here: Dienstag und Mittwoch 07.00-18.00 Uhr Donnerstag 07.00-21.30 Uhr Freitag 11.00-14.00Uhr Samstag 08.00-21.30 Uhr Sonntag 10.00-17.00 Uhr

What an exceptional find here in Basel. It's National Swiss Day, so many places are closed, but not…read morethis one. We came here for breakfast and will go back to get artisan chocolates later. I had an exquisite fresh pain au chocolat that was filled with luscious, artisan Swiss dark chocolate. The croissant itself was also covered in a light sugar glaze. I've eaten a lot of fresh French pain au chocolat in my life and none compares to this because of the higher quality chocolate. The orange juice is freshly squeezed. The coffee is quintessential European-doesn't taste like burnt beans nor is it like high octane diesel (is it clear I detest American coffee?) Everyone loved their breakfasts. One friend had an egg salad sandwich that looked like it was fluffy, deviled with lots of paprika. Another had a pain au raisin. Service was excellent, too. This is worth your visit if in the area.

If you're going to buy chocolates from one shop in Basel, it needs to be from here…read more First, look at the window and you will see a platter of the most beautiful leafy object dipped in chocolate. If you're not familiar with it, it's a golden gooseberry. To be exact, it's liquor-infused golden gooseberry dipped in a superb, no preservative dark chocolate. I swear I thought I died a little eating these decadent nuggets of chocolate fantasy. If Americans think chocolate covered strawberry is the bomb, wait till you taste these. Cost be damned, these taste so orgasmic that after sampling two, we returned and bought a dozen. I kid you not! The sales lady was super nice (when she's not frazzled). We asked about longevity and she replied honestly, no more than 5 days. We also bought a selection from their truffles and a truffle bar (red wine). All the truffles are completely preservative free. Some of their bar types are truffles which are also preservative free. Other bars do have some preservatives. In case you don't know, the vast majority of chocolates in the market have preservatives; that's how they last longer than 3 months. No preservatives chocolates typically have a shelf life of 6 to 12 weeks only. EVERYTHING was consumed in less than 3 days. SO GOOD! Be aware it's not cheap. The guy ahead of us in line bought a big box of 750 gram and paid about US$90 for it. That is love! LOL
