The place isn't much to look at, but that just tells you they're too consumed with cooking then redecorating. You can eat in, take away, get a specially made cake for a special occasion, there's even a range of Italian ice cream desserts available. If you're lucky and get there on time, in the shop window they'll display some sweets that are either on special, have been marked down due to irregular shapes or need to be sold before the next day. They're usually so cheap you'll be tempted to bag the whole tray.

I was lucky enough to be wandering along Scotchmer St about a year ago and spied the croissants through the window, sitting in the cutest shelving system I've seen in a while. I popped in, to a delightfully temperature maintained simple bakery room. The smell hit me and I almost melted. I ordered and took a couple of croissants to a friend's. Seriously amazing. They cover everything: light fluffy, flaky, crunchy, layered. This place looks like a traditional bakery in a European village - I love it. I have been coming back ever since. They also make everything else amazingly well. The bread is again reminiscent of a European bakery and the do sweet things scrumptiously.

The lovely ambient music playing at just the right volume helped the mood as well. The server I had here was a beauty. Sharp as and full of information, personality and humour. Sometimes not easy to pull off without coming across as a smart Alec but no danger of that here. A very good operator. It was cold day and I felt like a soup. Chestnut and mushroom was the server's recommended option, with my preference of seeded bread not sourdough (people, read the Harvard studies about the wonders of whole grain). The soup was superb. A perfect soup for my taste. Ideal food for this weather. I also went nutso over the bread which was toasted so perfectly you could have mistaken it for an art piece. I was advised that this bread was their best seller and I can understand why. It was fantastic with great texture and flavour and just the right accompaniment for the lovely, very well made soup. There was sensational coffee here as well. Deep, rich and delectable. Best I've had for a while. I was advised it was Code Black coffee . A beautiful brew with incredible length and brilliantly made too. I'm in a bit of shock about how much I enjoyed it here. Things are done simply but with a quiet understated style, confidence and best of all, competence. A good place that I heartily recommend.

In fact, there are three other great bread shops within about a 500 metre stretch of Sugardough, and then there's nought for miles (?!?). Where Sugardough stands up is through the consistency and crunch of their breads. They don't over produce, so you won't be getting left over stock at the end of the day. This can mean that they won't have exactly the variety you're after, but you know it's fresh and that's of far more importance. They also do great (and consistently so) coffee, cakes, pizza slices and have some of the best pies in Melbourne. Actually, it's the pies that get me going back now that I don't live in the area -- they've still got a bit of a grip on me...

This place isn't just for the sweet of tooth though. There are delectable hot, savoury munchies - spicy Malaysian pumpkin tart, spanakopita with salad and homemade chutney, and breakfast pies, to name a few. Don't forget to check the specials board, and when the cosy café is just too full to accommodate you, place your order at the counter then mosey on out to the back garden for some sunny, courtyard action.
