Mitla Cafe is one of those places you have to experience if you're from the IE. This San…read moreBernardino staple has been around since 1937, and the little bit of history behind their crispy tacos is pretty cool. Glen Bell, before Taco Bell was even a thing, had his burger stand right across the street and became a regular at Mitla. He ended up learning how they made their tacos, and the rest is history. Now let's talk about why I came. Those crispy tacos are SO good. That crunch, the seasoned meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato... everything just works. And I can never pass up a Carta Blanca . They also give you that little complimentary bowl of chile con carne, and let me tell you, that chile was delicious! The service was great, everyone was friendly, and the whole place just has a really good vibe. You can feel that old-school San Bernardino charm as soon as you walk in. Definitely one of those spots that makes you want to sit back, enjoy your food and take in the experience.

Lovely, historic gem in San Bernardino. This storied restaurant sits at the intersection of…read moreMexican/American culture and serves up delicious entries with a side of Route 66 History. The salsa and warm chips were a wonderful start to the meal while we waited to place our order. I had combination #2 to try the hard shell taco (reportedly the inspiration for Taco Bell's), the chicken enchilada, and tamale. This was a delicious plate that brought a smile to my face and the horchata was also excellent. Service was a bit slow (very busy), but extremely friendly. If you're cruising Route 66 or out this way for any reason, give Mitla's a try! Pro tip: if you can't find street parking, they have a lot on the street by their south side.

A couple leaving as we walked in told us they had come for the same special and really enjoyed it, which was a good sign. The restaurant has a fun beach-meets-1950s-diner feel, with their '48 Woody wagon logo, servers in Hawaiian-style shirts, and a music mix that jumped from the '50s and '70s to contemporary Christian. I also noticed John 3:16 on the wall and a piece of art by our friend Von HotRod, who is local to the area. Our service was very friendly, although a little slow. The fish was the star. The batter was crispy and crunchy on the outside, while the fish inside was white, soft, flaky, and very fresh. It came with seasoned steak fries and coleslaw. I liked both. Our table was split on the coleslaw, with a few saying it was bland, but I actually liked that it worked almost like a palate cleanser between the salty fish and fries. The tartar sauce was mellow, but good. Dessert was a little more mixed. Someone ordered the strawberry malt, another had the "I'm Stuffed" mini hot fudge sundae, and my husband and I shared the full hot fudge sundae. I wasn't a fan of the full sundae being served in a tall shake glass because it was difficult to eat and the ice cream had already started melting by the time it arrived. The "I'm Stuffed" version was actually the better choice because the ice cream stayed frozen and intact. Overall, the fish was excellent, everything tasted fresh, the atmosphere had a lot of personality, and the staff was very friendly. A few service and dessert details kept it from being a 5-star visit, but we enjoyed ourselves and would go back. JustAskMouse.com

My daughter had not gone with us to Utah, so she has not tried it and we kept ranting and raving how good it was. I also told my cousin and her family they also have not tried it before. We went tonight to Colton one and it was the worst customer service ever! I have never received such bad service. There was only one other couple inside. The place was empty. After receiving such horrible service, my cousin said will look no wonder nobody comes here. My daughter is a teenager. She can't eat that much because she has stomach issues so she ordered a chicken strip kids meal and the lady said it's only for 12 and under and she kept having a bad attitude and would not let my daughter order the kids meal. My husband ordered the fish and said the fish tasted real old. Probably is considering Friday is their fish day so they use leftover. My cousins did not care for the food too much either. I think this will be our last time going here sadly, as the one in Utah is so great. I'm pretty sure they're probably gonna be shutting down as the places is empty and the service is horrible and the food mediocre. Our server was Kourtney M.

As we entered, we were greeted and seated quickly even though the restaurant was almost at full capacity. Nicole was our waitress. She was great and attentive. She checked up on us multiple times throughout our stay, greatly appreciated. I ordered the open face hot turkey sandwich. It was good. First place that actually serves thick most turkey breast slices. The bread underneath was slightly toasted similar to garlic bread - surprisingly tasty. The mash potatoes were a bit heavier than normal on pepper. The gravy esa more like brown gravy vs turkey gravy. It was OK. The dining area was noisy because there were several families with several young kids. Understandable. Once most of the families with the young kids started leaving, the noise died down quickly. Even though the restaurant was full, our food orders cane out quick. Great appreciated and surprised. I ordered a vegetable dessert: personal apple pie with vanilla scoops of ice cream (came with caramel but was able to opted for chocolate). Overall: We will be coming back and possibly try different items.

Our waitress was tentative and on point. She moved quick and was accurate. Today, I tried something new. I ordered the Carne Asada Torta and substituted my French fries for home fries (order them extra crispy). I prefer them extra crispy because they're a little under done for my liking the regular way they cook them. The accidentally added bell pepper and onion to them and the waitress let me know ahead of time. I told her it was ok because I actually like them like that. My torta was good. It's huge! Definitely a meal for 2 people. The bread was soft - it could've been toasted a bit more for me because it wasn't able to support the beans and meat and started falling apart. It comes with lettuce, tomato, avocado, beans, mayo, and cheese. The meat was flavorful and even had a nice char and the refried beans were nice and creamy. Even though it was good, it wasn't my favorite. No matter what you order, make sure and get their salsas. They have a green and red and I think it's best to mix them... The ambiance is full of life. There's music playing in the background but it's not too loud. Definitely a cool little spot to dine in.

Yucca was a bit overfried but very crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Loved the pork a lot. Super tender and has a nice crisp from the frying.
