Very nice experience. We ordered the Meze platter as an appetizer and it was delicious. Pita bread was so soft and good. Steak frites was incredible. So tender. Marinated for 24 hours and it's shows. So good. We also ordered the Gyro platter. The Gyro meat was dry and didn't have too much flavor but the salad and rice were excellent. We had the kebab very well seasoned and delicious. Chef Charles took over this place in September and has made it a neighborhood locals spot with the freshest ingredients and authentic Turkish and Mediterranean dishes. For appetizers we had the hummus, babaganoush, and grilled artichoke. They were all knockouts! I'm not usually a fan of babaganoush, but theirs was so good I couldn't stop eating it. My family had the chicken kebap, salmon, their seafood special for the night, and I had the Saslik kebap. Every single dish was very good! My saslik kebap was to die for, and I've since gone back multiple times for it. The meat is perfectly tender and well spiced. I cannot recommend Bakalo enough. My friend had been talking about getting Greek food at this place for weeks and we finally made it. We walked over from her appartment on a Thursday around 7PM. The place was super cute, there was indoor dining but we had just came from a run so we opted to sit outside. We got to choose our own table, the weather was perfect it was not too hot and we loved people watching. Our waiter was so nice, he came over and offered us water, then the owner came and told us the daily specials and we were ready to ordere. We got the greek salad, the octopus special, the chicken swarma, and the meatballs. The greek salad looked just like it does in greece and it was super fresh. I loved the vinagrette that came with it, I also loved the touch of capers in it. The octopus special was the only thing that we didn't love. It was an octopus salad but we both thought it was too vinegary. The meatballs were my favorite they were juicy and the sauce was delicious. The chicken swarma came with pita bread and picked onions. It was truly a treat. My only critique is that the food portions were so tiny. I wish they offered a little more for the money. For example, we got the sampler of spreads (hummus, smoked eggplant, etc) and we only got a few pieces of bread to go with it. This is easily corrected though. The ambience is very nice. We had an absolutely fabulous dinner at Bakalo. There are many great restaurants in South Beach. This charming restaurant, opened just three months ago, is nevertheless a stand out. So good, in fact, that we plan to go back again tomorrow! To start with, it was a pleasure to be sitting outdoors on a quiet street, and to be spared the noise of traffic or car horns. Seating was also very comfortable. OK, onto the food. The appetizer and main course portions are very generous making them an excellent value. The chef takes care to make sure each dish looks lovely when it is presented to the table, the flavors are unique, and the chef-owner personally goes around to each table to make sure that you are enjoying your meal. For starters, we had grilled octopus and roasted artichoke hearts. We enjoyed the artichokes very much, but the grilled octopus was exquisite. It is served alongside a fava bean purée, which was a great contrast of flavor and texture. The octopus was some of the most tender and flavorful I've ever had. Just writing about it makes me hungry! For the main course, we shared a terrific branzino served with a mouth-watering garlic mashed potato. The portion was very generous. It easily served two of us. We saved room for dessert. I always thought that my mother-in-law made the best baklava. Shhhh, don't tell her, but the pistachio baklava we had for dessert was some of the best ever. Ordered two dishes one came after 20 minutes the other one never arrived. Then, the people who were seated after us got all their food at Once while we sat there without ours. We asked the two men including the owner what was going on and he told us to leave! He should have apologized given most of the people sitting around us were also annoyed at how long it was taking for them to come over for them to order. They are not warm and friendly just overwhelmed. It seems like they don't want to hire more waiters because they don't want to pay them. Greed does not work. The portions are tiny ! ago We had guests visiting from NYC and were looking forward to dining at Bakalo Mykonos Aegean Bistro after reading this was the first US outpost. We were seated outside as requested and the ambience was ordinary. Unfortunately the food misses the mark. A cold meze starter of three spreads is presented in tiny bowls with pita triangles. Our guest requested additional pita which is an upcharge of $1.50 on the bill - really! The balance of our meze choices were a mix and not memorable. Octopus was an attempt at creativity but was lacking on all levels. Entrees included a branzino that was substandard in flavor and texture. Greek kabob could be found at any street fair. We left feeling unfulfilled in our culinary experience not to mention the price point which is excessive. We will not return to Bakalo and will clearly not recommend to our friends. read more
