Cornish hen with black truffles is exquisite
    Edmond T.

Located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam's recently re-developed "Westelijk Havengebied" area, BAK is a must try restaurant with amazing food and serious wine, served in a laid-back and contemporary setting. The architecture of the restaurant is just stunning, with the unique windows on one side and extremely high ceiling to make it airy. The menu reflects the chef's love for seasonal and local ingredients, and on the wine list you can expect natural wines and quirky grape varieties with many by the glass options. For lunch, BAK offers a very affordable three-course at about 30 Euros, while dinner pre-fixe is 95 euros. Everything can be ordered a la carte. To take advantage of the interesting grape varietals, we opt for the a la carte menu and for the Somm to recommend the pairing for us. For about 10 euros a glass, we tried many different wines through France and Italy . Food is full on flavor, creative and the combinations just work! The amuse bouche is a beef tartare wrapped in shiso leaf: a refreshing way to start the rest of the night. My highlight is the Cornish hen with a 18 euro supplement of black truffles: it is moist, flavorful and cooked just right. My starter, raw scallop served in a hazelnut oil and quince juice is creative and perfect. The duck heart appetizer also scored high for me. Such a treat to be dining at BAK for the wonderful (elevated yet not stuffy) service and exquisite food and wine experience.

Was skeptical when this was a) super far from the main area/near ports b) buzz up was required to enter the building and it was so quiet PRICE WAS FAIR AND VALUABLE. Came for lunch prix fixe which can usually have a lot of hits and misses but €34.50 for 3 courses considering the quality and presentation was phenomenal FOOD WAS FRESH, TASTY AND NOVEL - free bread: sourdough was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft but dense on the inside - beet salad with blackberries: tart but sweet from the blackberries, and savory with the onion - fish: perfectly crispy skin, tender on the inside with a slightly sweet but savory carrot sauce and purée. Even the zucchini was perfectly cooked - dessert: plums perfectly cooked and rose kombucha and sorbet went surprisingly well with the dollop of whipped cream. Slightly tart, not very sweet -- YUm TLDR: lunch prix fixe was definitely worth it and I'd highly recommend coming. Quality of ingredients was phenomenal, cooking was delicious and novel, presentation was beautiful and service was great!!

From start to finish this place delivered! After searching many options in the city I landed on BAK and I'm so glad I did! Well done team!

Food portion very small, personally not to my liking. Service from the waiter was not sincere and we paid a deposit of 200 euro was not told it was not refundable. Feel cheated as this was not being told! Nothing impressive!

Omg! Wasn't in Amsterdam too long (only 4 days), but BAK served my favorite meal of my visit. The food was delicious and the service was great (besides a slight slip with the water). I had the regular tasting menu for lunch and enjoyed most of the dishes immensely. Some of the standouts were the winter cod and parsley root dishes. I would return in a heartbeat!

The previous review are spot on. This is a must have high end dinner, and the dining experience is worth it. A complete menu with 8 courses, we added the optional cheese course for a total of 9, beyond the exquisite Belgian bleu cheese, the carrot sorbet with buckthorn was only outdone by the sourdough crepe with sour apple filling and topped with fresh whipped sweet cream

I visited Bak while vacationing in Amsterdam to celebrate turning 33! I can safely say that this was one of the best birthday dinners I've had - from the great pescetarian menu to the wine pairings. The food was both delicious and beautifully presented (I took some photographic evidence). The service was polite and attentive. I hope to return again in the future!

    Awesome A.

Bak is really a terrific restaurant. Not only is the food delicious and beautifully presented, but the location is a treat in itself. At first glance the simple menu might seem unappealing. One of the dishes was described as "oatmeal, mussels, fennel and cornichons". To be honest, it sounded terrible to me. However, it was one of the most delicious dishes we tried! Creamy risotto-like oatmeal was topped with perfectly cooked mussels and sour cornichons. It still might sound strange, but it was surprisingly yummy! Other highlights of the meal included the dessert of strawberries and tomatoes with goat milk frozen yogurt and the amuse bouche of squid ink crackers topped with a tarragon mousse. The wines paired perfectly with each dish. It was fun to taste the wine before the food was served, and then after taking a bite. The flavors complimented each other wonderfully. I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.

It was very warm in the place, so keep that in mind if you're traveling in Amsterdam during a heat dome! We had a couple servers who worked with us nd both were kind and friendly. They didn't quite communicate with each other about our need to split the check a specific way, but it worked out in the end. We enjoyed some cocktails and beer (ranging from 9.50 Euro to 12 Euro), as well as the Pork Belly and Pickles to start off (21.50 Euro for 300 grams). Tasty way to start the meal. The three of us shared our mains and enjoyed what we had. The Favorite Ribs (24.50 Euro) were flavorful; the L'Incroyable 300gr (Ribeye; 34.50 Euro) was good, but our least favorite of what we ordered; the Le Cannibale Royale 170gr (burger) was super tasty. We also enjoyed some frites (4.90 Euro) and some delicious Mac n Cheese (6.50 Euros). Good time and good food!

Not sure what else is on the menu as we just ordered apple pie with whipped cream. A single slice is plenty for two people. It is not overly sweet, the crust is really good (a slight taste of Biscoff cookies to me), and it has a few raisins in it as well. It was a nice night nice so we sat outside. The patio is large and seats plenty. The service is good, not great, but I was okay with it. My needs were meager - get my pie! N*joy!

I'd say about 95% of the people were ordering the apple pie, so of course we had to get one to see what the hype was about. The apple pie is pretty unique, it's basically a big chunk of cooked apple topped with a sweet, crumbly cookie like crust. The flavor reminded me of those little brown biscuits you get as airplane snacks... basically Biscoff cookies. lol!!! Overall, you really taste the natural apple flavor along with that Biscoff like cookie flavor. The pie itself isn't very sweet, which I actually liked, but adding some whipped cream definitely brings up the sweetness and makes it even better. The setup is pretty straightforward: get in line, order and pay, pick up your food, then find your own seat. It's definitely a popular spot, so be prepared for the crowd and a bit of a wait.
