Chips and salsa
Brandon F.

Stopped by for some lunch with family while on a day trip to Carmel. This place looked promising from pictures and the menu but that's about all it had to offer. I ordered the mango enchiladas which surprisingly had some flavors that definitely went together. The flavor profiles lack in the sense of giving you a desire for more. The chips and salsa are good. The chips have a seasoning which gives it a kick. Overall the enchiladas were ok but bland. The salsa from the chips and salsa was actually good. Service was ok, had to flag my server down a few times for the same item which happens but none of the order was messed up. The outside seating is perfect for the Carmel weather. Was enjoyable sitting outside.

I've been here quite a few times over the years, and it's one of my convenient go-to spots when I'm at Carmel Valley Ranch. There aren't a lot of Mexican restaurants nearby, so it's a solid option if you're craving Mexican food. While I've had better Mexican food elsewhere, this place has a big menu, good food, and it's great for families with kids. The atmosphere is part of the appeal. It has an old gas station, neighborhood dive bar vibe that's just fun and relaxed. They also have live music outside on some nights. I usually order one of the combo plates or the enchiladas, but the Speedway Tostada in my photo is another favorite. It's basically a taco salad served in a crispy fried tortilla shell, and it's huge. They also make good margaritas and have a nice selection of cocktails and beer. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, and an easy place to come back to.

Tropical Mango Enchiladas

Very cool place! Loved the decor and didnt realize how many celebs have dined here. We were on our way to the bathroom and saw a picture of a player from the Green Bay Packers so that was really cool! We ordered the Tropical Mango Enchiladas and Baja's Flamin Fajitas w/ Carne Asada. The fajitas dish was SIZZLING. It was so cool but it did take a while to start eating it. Not much ventilation at our table, the fans were just pushing the heat into our faces. But overall, such a delicious meal. Our server was also very fun/funny too! We appreciate her service and occasionally checking in on us!

Enchiladas

Our server was great and the food was delicious! This place is super quirky and fun, with old fashioned gas station decor everywhere, a cute patio with a fireplace where they do love music on the weekends, and a darker cozy atmosphere with cloth napkins. We stopped by for dinner after a book signing in Carmel Valley Village, and service was quick and attentive. We ordered two types of enchiladas, one with green sauce and chicken, the other with red and pork. The red sauce was just barely spiced, Smokey, and slightly sweet. The pork was perfectly cooked and fall apart delicious. My friend loved her chicken enchiladas with mushrooms. Each plate came with beans and rice as well. Mexican hot chocolate was tasty as was an Arnold Palmer. I will definitely be back!

Really enjoyed my dinner here! Blackened burrito: 8.5/10 Huge portion and there was plenty of juicy chicken and shrimp in the burrito. The beans and sauce were good too. Chips and salsa: 9/10 Great chips and the salsa has a nice kick to it. Monterey quesadilla: 9.5/10 I've never had a quesadilla with this flavor combination and I was pleasantly surprised! So fun trying it with artichoke and dill and tartar sauce!

Try ANYTHING with the mole sauce!! We went on a Thursday night with the live bad. It was a little loud, but once you're seated inside, the music is dampened. Even though it was packed, service was very fast.

This place was outstanding. Great atmosphere, high quality food, and remarkable service, from our funny and talented waiter, Jose. The chips and salsa are some of the very best we've had and far more substantive than the cheap, thin chips that you usually eat in baskets full. We couldn't even finish our first basket here! We'd return in a heartbea

Chicken Flamin' Fajitas

Beautiful area and outdoor patio. We were a pretty big party and did not have reservation, but were quickly accommodated. I tried their chicken fajitas and a margarita. I unfortunately did not love their food, but my boyfriend did. Overall, the service was good and although I did not enjoy their food, I think it was personal preference. There is a good amount of parking, and the area is perfect for the upcoming sunnier weather.

Inside

We came here while visiting in town yesterday and all the food was fabulous!! We enjoyed the fun inside decor and the waitress was super nice with prompt service. The food was amazing. This is a staple for us when we come to visit from now on. Thanks for the great experience!

Ask the Community - Baja Cantina Grill & Filling Station

I noticed they had a lot of grilled chicken sandwiches. Can I get plain grilled chicken? I am allergic to garlic and onion.?

Do the beans have lard, and are the chips fried in lard?

According to the lady who served us today- refried beans have lard and black beans don't. Unsure about the chips but I think not. Do double check.

We were on our way home from the 17-Mile Drive and wanted to get dinner before our long drive back. I found Padrino Restaurant on Yelp, and we decided to give it a try. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted and seated. I loved that they provide the table with a pitcher of water, but I do wish it was a little larger. We ordered the kids' food while we looked over the menu. This restaurant is a little more expensive than most Mexican restaurants. A kids' quesadilla was $8 with no sides included. We ordered a side of rice and beans for the kids to share since they were $4 each. My oldest got two fried quesadillas, and my youngest got one regular quesadilla. They don't automatically bring out chips and salsa, but they do offer them. I actually don't mind that because it can feel wasteful to give them to every table when not everyone will eat them. I understand the choice. I ordered the Stuffed Chilaquiles with beef. I loved the flavors. They were definitely different from what I am used to, but still very delicious. The asada was seasoned really well, although don't expect a huge portion of meat. I would give this 4/5 stars. My husband ordered the Enchiladas Rojas with a side of rice and beans (for an extra charge). He did not like the sauce at all because it was more like a dark mole sauce than the red sauce he is used to. I traded plates with him, and I actually liked it. It had a darker flavor than what I am used to, but it was still delicious. I would give this 3/5 stars. My mother-in-law ordered the Green Enchiladas. They were very different--they were more like flautas covered in green sauce. Still good, just not what we expected. I would give them 3/5 stars. I am happy we got to try it, and the service was great. I am just not sure if I would come back again. That may simply be because we are so used to the flavors and style of food we grew up with.

From the food to the drinks to the overall chic and comfortable ambiance, it was an absolute treat! The service was impeccable for our party of 8. The best salmon I've ever had, indeed. One of the guest had birria tacos served with a split bone marrow! Never saw that combination before! He let me try some and it was delicious! We ordered the Masa Tempura for starters. Masa tempura fried sweet corn, jalapeño, cilantro and citrus aioli. This was unique and delicious! The citrus aioli was a great accompaniment, as a dipping sauce. For our entree, JJ and I both ordered the Mole Enchiladas--- Chicken, mole coloradito, topped with pickled onions, micro greens, crema, sweet dusting of almond, walnut and chile guajillo and hand pressed corn tortillas. This dish was very flavorful and delicious. I enjoyed the rich mole sauce, and altogether was a great entree choice. I wish I would have had some rice, beans or vegetables with it though. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall, a great dining experience.

It felt a little chilly at first with the door propped open, but the staff was incredibly attentive and quickly closed it. The restaurant itself is noticeably clean, and it's clear the staff works together as a true team--everyone was so kind and welcoming to me as a solo diner. One thing to be aware of is a 3.5% eco-tax on the bill, but that minor detail doesn't take away from my stellar review. The menu offers a good range of items at different price points, along with an array of tempting day's specials. I ordered the tomato salad, which came loaded with arugula, mixed greens, frisée, feta, and basil, all tossed in a delicious balsamic vinaigrette. It was incredibly light and refreshing, and it's easily large enough to split if you're with someone. For the main course, I had the pork chop tomahawk served with fingerling potatoes and fried Brussels sprouts. Wow! It is massive--definitely enough for two people or perfect for lunch the next day. I consider myself a bit of a pork chop snob, and it is notoriously tough to cook a cut that thick perfectly. Mission Bistro nailed it. It was phenomenally juicy and amazingly well-prepared. But not to overshadow the well cooked fingerling potatoes that were crisp and soft, simultaneously, and the fried Brussels sprouts-- no salt needed. It was seasoned perfectly. The staff here is so down-to-earth and genuinely kind. I highly recommend giving them a try. If they don't look packed from the outside, don't let that fool you--the food and service made my last night in Carmel a lovely one.

It did not seem too busy upon arrival; I am not sure if they would have accepted walk-ins. We were immediately seated. We opted for a cranberry mocktail (refreshing for ginger lovers) and a coke for libation. For starters we tried their crab cakes and Caesar salad. Both dishes were delectable. The crab cakes were hearty and packed with flakes of crab; the sauce that came with was refreshing and paired well with the crab. The Caesar salad was good too and generously dressed. As entrees, I ordered the Ora salmon in creamy risotto and my +1 order the steak and frites. The salmon was cooked very well and had a crispy crust. I wasn't expecting it to taste as delicious with the risotto but the flavors worked well. My +1's medium rare steak was cooked perfectly and the fries seemed like a bonus as the meat and appetizers were more than enough food. Service was great with friendly staff. The restaurant's atmosphere was very nice as well and a recommended for an intimate evening. It seems like it might be family friendly too and separate families from couples I. The restaurant. Only thing that I was not a fan of was the choice of music that night which was mainstream hits. As the restaurant filled, it did get a little louder but not the the point where I was yelling.
