I live in Vail Colorado. I'd taken my huskey to our local Avon Pet Center for a mild tummy ache and…read moretwo days later my dog was going blind and couldn't use her back legs. My insitict told me to get a second opinion so I rushed to Conifer, 3 hrs away at 5:00 am just to find the Vet from Aspen Park Vet I'd used in the past, Dr Guerney who was one of a kind, had passed away earlier this year. They were now a very busy office with a very young staff and couldn't make time for us. In my desperation my friend called Bighorn. What a wonderful turn of events! Immediately I felt the peace come over me when his receptionist asked all the right questions and then actually listened compasionately to my responses! Amazing! She found me a spot for my Nala to be seen and within 2 hours Dr Curt was performing magic. Even tho I was being squeezed in and Nala wasn't his patient, he still took his time and was thorough, compassionate, kind, and most importantly extremely knowledgeable. I emphasize knowledgeable! His price was honest and very fair. Outstanding service! 5 stars! I will continue to drive the 3 hours if he will have us. Finding a quality vet, let's face it any servicer these days, who truly cares and isn't just trying to make money is a rare gem and worth the drive! Nala continues to fight and is holding steady! We can't expect perfection from our caregivers nor to have all the answers, perform miracles, or know what to do at all times but we can expect them to care, listen, and make wise, logical choices with the health of our loved ones. That is the profession after all. Thank you everyone from Bighorn from me and Nala!!! If you are reading this send some sweetness Nala's way!

Of course her eyelid, which is a somewhat specialized surgery, turned out as wonderfully as everything else that our family experiences at Bighorn. Thank you Doc and team!

Planned Pethood - wolf in sheep's clothing…read more I understand Dr Young is a TV personality and does charity work, but he's basically running nothing but a 'quick serve' right here in Conifer. I had to take my cat to him for an emergency because my own vet was unavailable. He was there for 3 days. As the hours wore on they kept insisting I needed to keep him there, including overnights - unattended, and likely in discomfort, if not in pain - when there is no one there to supervise the animals. One of the front desk staff told me they typically have 20 animals overnight. In 3 days all they did was an Xray and an enema. And, in 3 days, they never once called me for an update, even though they kept promising to when I called them. Most of the time I really had no idea about the state of his condition, and to be honest, I feared the worst. And the only way I could reach someone to talk to was to select the 'if this is an emergency' option. Each time I did reach someone they kept telling me that the reason they hadn't got to my cat was because of the volume of surgeries they had every day - this became a recurring mantra. After they told me he had to stay there for longer - even though they were closed for the following 2 days(!) - I went and picked him up. At first they weren't going to release him to me(!). I took him straight to Wheat Ridge emergency hospital down the hill, and he was out of there within about 3 hours. Even though this emergency hospital also treated walk-ins and performed emergency surgeries all day, they not only were set up to treat my cat promptly, but the whole atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and they took the time to keep you updated on your pet, and proactively contacted you. I get that there are emergency surgeries, and if I needed that for my cat I would be grateful to have that service right away. But, what makes it that one vet clinic uses that as a 'poor me' excuse not to see its other patients who are in discomfort and possibly pain for three(!) days, while another clinic is able to be open 24/7, welcome walk-ins, deal with all the emergencies coming in, and concurrently care for other patients within just a few hours. My old vet down the hill warned me not to use Planned Pethood (when I first moved here and was looking for a vet), and the emergency clinic vet had nothing good to say about them, and told me that 'everyone in the back' was flabbergasted at my cat's neglectful treatment. It seems this Dr Young is well known as a person of disrepute in the veterinary medical community. Dr Young's business model and his collective staff's neglect of my cat for three days bordered on abuse, and stringing me along bordered on deceit. If I'd known it would be a 3 day ordeal in the beginning, instead of being strung with promises of care hour by hour, I would have taken him down the hill in the first place. Only if he's been bitten by a bear in a snowstorm would I ever take my cat to Planned Pethood again!
