Even during the often busy lunchtime rush, my trusty sandwich would be made promptly and with generous fillings. Try steak and cheese for a special treat if you're in the mood. I took a star away from 5* because the sandwiches could be a bit bigger, they are substantially smaller than French standards and my appetite noticed the difference, but it's not a big deal when you compare Baguette Express to similar local sandwich stores.

Sides of garlic bread & creamy mash weren't anything special. -- strawberry & dragonfruit quencher and cloudy lemonade (£3.95 each): neither were strongly flavored enough to consider ordering again. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.

You know the Seinfeld episode 'The Cafe', where Jerry persuades a local restaurant to stop serving…read morea random multicultural menu and instead focus on one cuisine, which ends up being a disaster and then at the end when the foursome all fancy different meals they wish it still existed? Ladies and gents, I introduce you to Comet Food Bites. Comet is tucked away on a wee side street in Leith, and I can't imagine it'll get much passing trade, but helpfully it is on Hungry House and has its own website ordering system, so hopefully it'll get a lot of online customers like me (not that I actually live that far from it, I'm just lazy). The menu is long and varied, including pastas, risotto, enchiladas, burritos, burgers, pizza, chicken wings... you get the idea. Being really quite hungover, I plumped for a burger meal deal (with chips and a drink) for the ridiculously cheap price of £3.99. In order to bump it up to the minimum delivery charge of a tenner, I added a 10" pizza and a portion of profiteroles too. Now, by no means is this the best burger in Edinburgh, but for the price it's really very decent. The chips were ok too, which helps. And whilst I didn't eat the pizza the same night (I'm not *that* greedy), it stood up well to being reheated for lunch the next day. So well, in fact, that we ordered pizzas again the very next evening (2 12" for £12, nae bad at all). A word on the pizzas. These aren't your standard toppings - you'll find no pepperoni here. In fact it seems like the pizza toppings are derived from elsewhere in the menu, hence the abundance of bacon. I had the Lumberjack pizza (bacon, onions and mushroom), and then we had the Meat Tower (ham, bacon, sausage, white beef ragu) and the Carbonara (garlic cream sauce, bacon, egg). The Lumberjack was good, as was the Meat Tower, but I was less taken by the Carbonara. The garlic cream sauce was too much, way too overpowering and I couldn't finish it as a result. But it was cheap! The profiteroles were a bit meh too, with a curiously thin and runny chocolate sauce. On the whole however, Comet is a solid four stars. It's nice to have more takeaway options in the area, and at this price you can't complain about the quality (unless it was really bad, which is certainly isn't). I can definitely see us ordering from here again.

The rest of their menu, including wraps, pizza, etc, is similarly priced. This has been a very tricky location in the past, with Bakehoven and the White Bird Bakery not sustaining, but this place has every chance to do well. Overall, we said: "I'm hopeful that Comet Foodbites can build an audience for their high value comestibles. I'll definitely be back to give their other menu items a try as I found the burgers extremely pleasing. Add it to your list for a visit, soon."

The Filling place certainly can ruffle up a good sandwich, especially a ham and cheese salad baguette! And what made it even better was that the cheese was extra special, as it is sourced from the famous cheesemongers of Edinburgh, Iain Mellis. This little cafe however, doesn't just do sandwiches. They do baked potatoes, soups, Paninis and salads. All the produce looked fresh and the shop smelt full of fantastic flavours. I also believe you can purchase cheeses and hams from the cafe's deli counter. And the prices aren't too bad either, actually on the cheaper side of the coin. When I was in the cafe it wasn't that busy, and that in a way was quite nice, munching a small lunch time snack while people watching from the window seats. That will do me nicely.

Some say these are the best pies in Edinburgh, and I'd have to agree. They're a step above your average Scotch pie, and filled with delicious meat and gravy. The bridies are pretty damn good too. Mmmm! It costs more to have it hot and sit in (damn that pasty tax!), but I live so close that I just take it home and heat it up in my oven instead. Before devouring them in seconds and dribbling gravy all down my chin. I have had a hot roll from here before, it was alright. It's just a shame that it's not open on a Sunday, the day of the week when I most crave a roll and sausage. NOTHING is open on a Sunday on Easter Road that meets my roll requirements, sad face. Why won't someone think of my stomach?!
