My brother passed away in September, and I needed a bagpiper to play at his memorial. I chose Stephen because of the wonderful reviews he had, and he did not disappoint! We had a burial at sea for my brother and Stephen piped a song as he led everyone onto the boat, played as we spread the ashes, and then led everyone off the boat with another song. He even learned to play a certain song as a special request from me. Stephen was courteous and personable. He arrived 30 minutes early, which put my mind at ease, and he played beautifully! I would highly recommend him!

Stephen played the bagpipe for my husbands memorial service this weekend and he far exceeded my expectations.

Clue was comedic from beginning to end - like actually funny. The writing was witty and smart, the entire cast completely talented from head to toe. In 2018, I came to TX for my daughter's wedding in SATX, which coincided with my birthday. I decided the easiest way to see my friends was to have them come to the Sahara Lounge. My 50th birthday will always be one of my favorite birthday memories! Friends, great music, and a good atmosphere - it couldn't have been better. So, when I needed to make it back to ATX to pick up some family mementos from my aunt, I thought, "where better than the Sahara to see friends and hear some great music?" SL did not disappoint. Africa Night is the best! The music was hopping and I was able to catch up with friends outside where it's easier to talk. My travelling companion needed to leave a little earlier than I probably would have, but I did get some dancing in before the night ended. I'm not waiting 8 years to return to ATX & when I return, SL will be on my list of places to go! Some places typify the best in Austin and SL is one of those places. Thanks, Eileen!!

I was blown away in the best possible way. From the opening scene the cast shone, with phenomenal vocal range and depth, many doing multiple accents throughout. They worked well together as an ensemble, feeding off each others energy with quick, believable reactions as events unfolded. Jarrett King's rendition of the classic tale brought in modern themes in a way that was delicately done without banging you over the head on the dangers of fake news and racial inequality. I read the spoilers beforehand and was on edge about how it was going to play out, but when things fell apart they happened in a believable and natural way without live gunfire or too much of what we see on the news these days. Introducing the chaos that happens outside the studio during the historic events around Orson Wells' famous production helped showcase that nothing we do exists in a bubble, while enabling greater depth for the characters. It should tell you something that I am considering going back to see it a second time. Would highly recommend checking it out and considering future productions at Penfold Theatre Co!

I was at the performing arts center for a Alvin Alley dance workshop. This dance group travels throughout the world featuring modern dance, ballet and Afro beat movements. During middle and high school years we got the opportunity to see the Alvin Alley dancers every year. Their performance was elegant, rhymic and exquisitely executed. I remember being in awe of their toned bodies and breathtaking athletic and graceful moves. I remember also thinking how beautiful their ballet moves. Today's Rhythm and Movement workshop was engaging, authentic and very enjoyable. I loved that the workshop was diverse - ages 6 to 70+ years old, from all walks of life and different ethnicities. Look forward to the Alvin Alley dance performance next week...

The theater complex is conveniently situated at the edge of the Mueller development. Parking is covered, close, convenient, and FREE. Productions here are reasonably priced with tickets typically in the $10-15 per person range. Concessions are often run by boosters; while limited in their offerings, water is not $6 a bottle like it is at UT productions. The space is modern and attractive. In terms of comfort, I found the Black Box theater to be the less welcoming of the two. Seats are difficult to access in the risers, and I do not have mobility issues. The seats themselves are comfortable however. In sharp contrast, the main theater is very accommodating and comfortable. If accessibility is it all an issue I would check to see which theater your production is in before you buy the tickets. Highly recommended.

Part of the Frontera Fest (long fringe) and the whole process was quite efficient. You're on the guest list? Great. Here's a program and a seat. In fact they were nice enough to provide me with a chair so I didnt have to traipse about the chairs on the risers. They've got sodas for sale but it may be BYO (check first) and they've got plenty of bathrooms. All good things to know when you're headed to a performance. A fucking puppet show? Are you kidding me?…read more That's what I went to see at Salvage Vanguard Theater, and I liked it so much I went back for another show. I'll be back again. Now, I've only seen their puppet shows, I have no idea if they do other things. The puppet shows are different from anything you've seen: excessively dark, and no strings attached. The puppeteers wear dark beekeeper like suits and hold the brightly painted puppets up and manipulate them from behind. You can see everything that's going on, but within a minute or two, you forget the puppeteers are there and the characters take a life of their own. And what characters! It's obviously all-original and all home made, but they do such a good job of creating compelling characters and stories for them to tell that you'll wonder why they aren't more successful. My girlfriend and I still endlessly quote the shows we've seen and we keep trying to describe the characters and stories in a way that makes sense. It seems we utterly fail at that, and it's why I'm going to keep my review short. This place doesn't make sense. The show doesn't make sense out of context. It doesn't look like much from the outside ... or the inside. But trust me. I give it five stars for a reason, and this isn't even ordinarily my scene. I've tried to convince all my friends to go with varying levels of success, but no one has been disappointed and they all want to come back for more. If you've found it, go experience it.
