After a full morning of sight seeing, we wanted to take a lunch break and found the Bag O' Nails pub on the corner close to Buckingham Palace. The seats outside were perfect for afternoon sunning and people watching, as it is a busy corner. We went in and ordered at the bar, getting plates to share and beverages. I tried a Green King IPA, which was quite refreshing and cold after walking around. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but not all beer is served cold in London, so you might come across that aren't. My aunt ordered this drink, which I happily bought knowing she would have a "pornstar martini". It was a passion fruit concoction with a champagne shot poured into it. Little did we know that this wouldn't be the only one we had on the trip. My mom surprised us with an order of Halloumi plate and the Steak & Red Wine meat pie, which we shared with my sister. I love that Halloumi is often on menus in London, where it is much more uncommon on a US menu. I couldn't get enough. My aunt order the chicken tikka masala dish, which was great. Very flavorful and different choice for pub food. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Great little spot with a busy interior and on a busy corner, but was pretty relaxing just sitting out there on the street. read more

I was here today and we found a table as there was no front of house or anyone to ask us. Menus were on the table but nobody came over to ask us what we wanted and after 30 or so mins, I went up to the bar and ordered. The bartender seemed new and I didn't mind that but when the payment was processing for the food and drinks, he went off and got a bucket of ice in the middle of it and it needed him to approve it in which case the card declined. They had to process it over again. Anyhow when I eventually ordered the food and drinks, they came very quick and the food was delicious. I was staying at a nearby hotel and I thought stopping in for a pint late on a rainy night sounded fun, and Bag O'Nails was the "pub on the corner" that you'll find just about everywhere in London. I've been to lots of pubs all across England and this one has everything you need. While I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, it's perfect if your hotel is in the neighborhood or you need to kill some time before your train departs from Victoria Station. The drink menu is extensive and during the holidays they had some special Christmas themed beers on tap. They even have illy coffee, mixed liquor drinks, acceptable to good wine, and prosecco by the glass if beer isn't your thing (but be prepared to get some strange looks if you order something like that)! The bartenders were kind to us American tourists and the prices were reasonable by London standards. The atmosphere is great but nothing fancy: dark woods inside with dim lighting, lots of metal beer signs, and clientele that looks like what you'd expect at a corner pub. This is a great place to grab a local beer and hang out. Nobody rushed us at all and the bar was open late. Pro tip: remember in British pubs you must go up to the bar to place your order, even for food. No waiter will come by your table. There will be menus on the table so look them over and go up to order at your leisure. Americans tend to get confused by that system but it's universal in English pubs. I didn't eat any food so I can't review that, but the menu looked pretty good. However, the place was busy with locals and not one of them was eating the food. After waiting in immigration lines at the airport for 2 hours, I was desperate for fish and chips upon my arrival to the city. I found Bag O Nails randomly in my search on foot and decided to give it a try. The vibe of the restaurant is what I expected for a typical pub/restaurant. It was cute, warm, cozy, dark wooden walls. Immediately upon entering, we were asked to be seated upstairs even though there were tables available downstairs. Can't be too sure but it seemed like all tourists were kept in one place. The upstairs was tiny, but very cute. A small bar, one waitress working the entire floor. The service was amazing which is what the majority of my three stars is going to. She was attentive and super kind.. the hospitality was amazing. The food however was nothing to brag about. I opted for the big fish n chips. It was typical breaded cod (it was fried well and a nice size) the chips were few and were terribly cold and hard, shrimp scampi were clearly frozen and heated (were also cold by time they got to me) and plain white bread with cold butter pads on top. When we got up to ask the lady at the bar (because no one comes to check on you), she said "it was all ordered at the same time so it should come out". But it didn't. And they didn't care. We found this place on the corner near the Airbnb that we rented in London. It is a pretty well established pub so we decided to give it a try. The pub is a little small and does not have a lot of seatng on the ground floor, but there is a dining room upstairs. While we were there though, it was closed off for a special event We needed to either wait for a table or use takeaway, but we found one before long. It took a bit of time to get our order in due to the fact that there was only one person working at the bar. He was however very polite when he finally took our order. When the food eventually came out, they delivered the dessert before they delivered our food, so the table got a little bit crowded and are desert (sticky toffee pudding) had to be rushed through in order to make room for the rest of the plates. I had the beef burger and the wife had the chicken burger. Both were a little dry. We also try to Scotch egg which was a meat experience. All in all with the service wait times and the limited seating, it was just ok, but the s tag was very polite. My rating system consists of a 3-star being exactly what you expected and neither good nor bad. A 4 means something was extra special and a 5 means you were blown away. A 2 star rating was disappointing and a 1-star rating is terrible read more

During our time in London my husband wanted to eat in a pub and have fish and chips. As a vegan I planned to eat elsewhere after he ate. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see they offered clearly labeled vegetarian options. After asking a few questions I found I was limited to the Louisiana Burrito (the burger has cheese within the patty that can't be removed)...but it was great. I didn't expect one of my favorite meals in London to be in a pub that's for sure. And my husband had absolutely no complaints on his fish and chips either. We weren't sure if this would be a tourist trap given it's close proximity to Buckingham Palace but we found the food to be great and the prices fair. Would recommend. read more

Not a bad pub near Victoria - owned by T & J Bernard, it has a good choice of real ales, but is a little compromised by being sooo close to Buckingham Palace and Victoria station (ie often packed of tourists and at lunch and after work) and by the thunderous traffic of Grosvenor Place. The pub has an interesting history, though: mentioned in 1775 as the Bacchanals, the pub sign featured a satyr in the woods surrounded by jolly dogs - the 'Bacchanals' of the title. The satyr was painted black, and many locals regarded it as the devil, such that the pub was still known as the 'Devil and Bacchanals' as late as 1905, when the name was transliterated into the more homely 'Bag o' Nails'. Both inside and out, it has the feel of a traditional pub, although most of the dark wood furniture is rather new. The beers on my visit included Greene King IPA, Fuller's London Pride, Young's Special, Old Speckled Hen, Wadworth's 6X, and Courage Directors. So nothing way out of the ordinary, but finding six real ales around Victoria is always a plus. One slight downer is that the beers were served with rather generous heads, and we had to ask to have them topped up. They did so willingly enough, though I suspect an unknowing tourist might just have accepted it. They do a fairly standard range of pub grub: starters from £3.70-£4.30, mains £6.95-£10 and puds at a decent £2.95 to £3.70. They also do a range of 'sharing meals' (nachos - that kind of thing), sandwiches and jacket potatoes. There's also a large Sports TV screen in what is actually quite a small venue - it can get uncomfortably noisy for my taste when there's a match on. The other downer on my visit was the Gent's toilet: decently refurbished, but a bit messy and smelly (someone had clearly had a fight with the loo roll and lost). Overall, not a bad venue if you can drop in when it's a bit quieter. read more

Tremendous first meal in London. The "trendy" pubs were packed on Friday night but we so badly wanted pub food. We asked a random stranger for a recommendation and found ourselves at the Bag O Nails. The traditional pub was small and busy, just not spilling young professional people out the door. :) We went upstairs and ordered fish and chips (may be the best cod I ever had) and a steak and ale pie. Yesterday was my first time in the pub for years. Situated on Buckingham Palace Road, near Victoria Station. I would often go when I lived in Pimlico. It has not changed much. Got a nice mix of locals and tourists. Good choice of beers. Ladies in the group were pleased that they sold Prisecco by the glass.
