The Badlands Inn was fine. Nothing amazing about this hotel, nothing terrible. I paid almost $100 for a one night stay and if it wasn't located immediately outside of Badlands National Park I'd say it was a rip off. However, it is right outside the south entrance and offers beautiful views of the park and sunsets. The room was clean, could use some updating, but functional and worth the stay after a long day of exploring and hiking the Badlands. Just so you know the only dining near the Inn is is at Cedar Pass Lodge a few miles away, inside the park. The food there is decent, also three stars. Badlands Inn does offer a free continental breakfast and a bag of ice. I felt for the price the breakfast should have been better. Also, they played church services on the lobby TV during Sunday morning breakfast. That was annoying to me. Just play the news like every other hotel lobby!

A planned stop on our route it was just what we needed to get a shower good notes sleep and breakfast. Amazing staff

This was a planned stop on our route we arrived late and the front desk called to let us know she was closing up for the night we had been a few minutes away and she graciously waited... So kind of her to do that. The place is very basic but good to sleep shower and have breakfast. Views were gorgeous and I would stay there again. For the $100 it was perfect. One tiny issue which was more bothersome for my husband was that if you leave the door open you will get some flies so don't or bring a fly swatter.

We were a little anxious based on the exterior but had a great stay. Amazing view and the room was nice.

Cedar Pass Lodge - Cedar Pass Lodge Cabin after renovations.

Cedar Pass Lodge, a confusing name for actually a great place in the middle of nowhere. There's no…read morelodge at the lodge. All the overnight accommodations are in individual CABINS. And the cabin we had was cozy and nice & clean. One of the best national park overnights we've had. The main building has a nice giftshop, a small shop (booze sold here), and a just ok restaurant (tiny - boring menu). Great location in the Badlands. Killer views just a short hike from the cabins. There are nighttime ranger talks, also a quick walk from the cabins. We really enjoyed the astronomy presentation. The rangers had a green laser they were able to point out different constellations. We even saw the International Space Station go overhead. The staff we interacted with was very kind.

The cabins are ok but suffer from some deficiencies. - Ours…read morehad two beds crammed in but the smaller one had no bedside light, so the person there required the main room light to read. The larger bed had two ridiculously weak wall lights but also one side lamp. - In-room coffee is one of the small gadgets that take pre-packaged coffee packets. But they only give you two, even for a six night stay. Given there's no daily room service, you're left coffee-less after one morning. We managed to score a few more from the maids/room service people doing room turnover outside but still had to go in to the lodge to ask for more. My advice? Bring a coffee maker from home. - The rooms are basically motel rooms, so you get a mini fridge, microwave, the aforementioned small coffee maker, a nonfunctional TV (we didn't care about that) and weak sometimes nonfunctional wifi. The lodge/cafe has functional wifi. - Some other issues: front door screen wouldn't latch so unless we wanted flies in the room, we had to keep the main door closed. Flies are a problem here. The back door had no screen door at all. Windows were cranky/non-functional. - There we're no instructions on the various remotes. One controls the heat (and possibly AC, not sure); the other controls the main room light and fan. But the light/fan also has wall switches so you might find yourself pushing buttons on the remote to no effect or flipping wall switches uselessly trying to get the light to come on. Didn't need to fiddle with the TV remote. - The alarm clock kept alarming and we couldn't figure out how to cancel the alarm setting, even after going online to read the manual. Ended up unplugging it which also meant losing the USB ports. We always bring extension cords and power strips so that wasn't a big issue. Even with all those problems, the cabins are still nice and are conveniently located within the park. The main building (which I guess is the 'lodge' even though it has no rooms itself) is close by and has essentials as well as one of the better National Park gift shops I've been to. Restaurant is nothing great but it's there too (separate Yelp page for it).

David is not a breakfast attendant. David is a hospitality wizard who has somehow chosen to use his powers in Wall, South Dakota. He is a force of nature. A once-in-a-generation talent. A man whose mastery of hospitality borders on the supernatural. Every morning he greeted guests with a smile, kept everything stocked, cleaned, organized, and running smoothly, all while making people feel genuinely welcome. My family looked forward to seeing him each morning. I've stayed in hotels all over the country, and I can confidently say that David may be the single greatest continental breakfast attendant in the history of lodging. If there were a Breakfast Hall of Fame, he would be a first-ballot inductee. If there were a Mount Rushmore of hospitality workers, they would need to carve a fifth face. At one point I watched him refill the pancake station with such efficiency and grace that I briefly wondered if I was witnessing an advanced civilization disguised as a hotel employee. Scientists should study his ability to keep coffee flowing, raspberry-filled donuts available, and traveler morale at peak levels. Economists should measure the positive impact he has on the local tourism industry. Historians will someday ask how a continental breakfast at a roadside hotel became legendary. The answer will be simple: David. In all seriousness, David was incredibly friendly, hardworking, and professional. He made a great hotel stay even better. Give him a raise. Five stars for the hotel. Six stars for David. P.S. - If I ever return to Wall, South Dakota, it will be partly to see the Badlands again, but mostly to verify that David is, in fact, a real person and not a hospitality legend passed down through generations of travelers.
