I'm writing this because I lost my dog, and it could have been prevented. I brought my dog in to see Dr. Gant after she'd been sick and getting worse over the course of a day and a half. After examining her, Dr. Gant diagnosed her with Pyometra and told me she needed emergency surgery. He also said that if we couldn't afford surgery, he could put her on a few rounds of antibiotics and clear it up. I didn't want to put her through a risky surgery as she was 10 years old and already weak. It didn't make sense if the antibiotics would work -- as he said they would -- and I also didn't want to take on the expense of an emergency surgery if there was a less invasive option that could help her. He had told me he had seen other dogs treated of Pyometra with antibiotics and said it should be fine. He took an X-ray and said it didn't look as bad as he originally thought, so he sent her home with antibiotics and some food. Just two hours later, my husband found her unable to stand and gasping for air. We were scared and called Dr. Gant's office, but he was extremely rude to my husband, who was trying to get help for our dog. He accused me of lying about what he'd said and told us to take her to the ER. She stopped breathing in the ER parking lot. They tried CPR, but she didn't make it. The emergency vet told us there should have only been two options given to us when she was diagnosed earlier that day: 1) Emergency surgery or 2) Euthanasia. If I had known that Pyometra could cause her cervix to close and uterus to rupture if left untreated, I would never have brought her home. I would've done anything to prevent her from dying in pain. Instead, I was sent home with false hope. I was told we could follow up in two days if she hadn't improved, and he scheduled me to come back for more antibiotics in two weeks for a follow-up. He never told me there was potential for her to pass in a matter of seconds from this illness. That advice cost my sweet girl her life. I'm not writing this to be spiteful or to get revenge on Dr. Gant. My concern is not with him. I'm writing this because I miss my baby girl every day, and I never want anyone else to go through what we did. No one's fur baby should have to die in so much pain. If this helps even one person avoid that pain, then sharing our story was worth it.

There should be a better procedure than what is required, maybe appointments only could make things more smoothly for customers to get in to see the vet instead of the walk-in procedure signin requirements.

After waiting for 45 minutes after our scheduled appointment time with no one coming in the room, I asked the Ver Tech on the status. She said she would check and let me know. The Tech came in and said the Vet was working with a sick dog and would be in as soon as possible. I responded "no problem, she (pointing to my dog) is just ready to go home." The Tech understood, asked if I wanted to leave my dog at the clinic and they would call when done. I told her I didn't want to leave her there and we would wait. About 10 minutes later, the Vet came to the room and said, "I hear your dog is fucking ready to go." Stunned, I said "what?" To which she repeated. I let her know I never said that and let her know I only said she was ready to go. The vet was calling in the tech, in order to avoid an argument, I said we would not be staying nor returning. She contacted City Vet in Mansfield Texas to advise that something was terribly wrong as he was breathing and panting and would not accept his favorite treat. Further examination showed that one of his legs was swollen although he had no fall or injury. (He's always been a house dog so they would know). She called CityVet and was told they could see him in a few hours at 4pm. She anxiousl awaited the time until 3:30pm and went in. She was placed in one of the waiting rooms but at 4:40pm the Dr. still had not even looked or checked in on her dog. One of the assistants stated after checking that his temperature was 105. Still no Dr nor even a pill to relieve the fever. When my Daughter then asked an assistant when the Dr would be in the Dr proceeded to come in and announce she had an emergency in another room and that she could find another place 3 miles down the road. We left, her crying and carrying her almost 40 pound Binky and found another facility open. Together they agreed that he was in so much pain that he should be put down. The other facility was Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialist in Mansfield, TX. They have been there on frontage Rd for quite some time they have just changed their namt. The treatment by the staff was amazing. They allowed my Daughter and Granddaughter and I to sit with him just loving on him for quite awhile and when it was time to let him go to Heaven the Dr stayed with us. Afterward we were allowed to continue holding him through the process and at the end. I suggest if you want help, consideration and this most difficult time, that you go there. From the moment we arrived, the staff seemed convinced it was cancer simply because he had a history of cancer as a puppy. Without pursuing other likely causes, I was told there was essentially nothing they could do. Even the oncologist on site agreed with that assessment. I asked if it could possibly be something else, such as a bite or infection, because that's what it looked like to me. That possibility was dismissed. I was told surgery was an option but not guaranteed and would have to be done by a different doctor and would cost thousands of dollars. They also told me his blood work suggested kidney failure and implied he only had about six months to live regardless. The impression I left with was that my options were to keep him comfortable until the end or consider euthanasia. Thankfully, I trusted my instincts and sought a second opinion with Alvarado Animal Clinic. They immediately believed it looked like a bite or abscess. They drained it, put in a drain tube and packed the wound, and within a month it had completely healed. They also found no evidence that my dog was in kidney failure. Today he is healthy, happy, and doing great. I understand that medicine isn't always black and white, but I was disappointed that such serious conclusions were reached without fully exploring other, treatable possibilities. If I had accepted the original diagnosis without seeking another opinion, the outcome for my dog could have been heartbreaking. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this clinic. I strongly encourage anyone facing a serious diagnosis to seek a second opinion before making life-changing decisions.

However, keep in mind that they are PRICEY & charge every little thing, such as giving your pet medication by mouth. All the charges add up QUICK. Just know that you have an option to transfer your pet, once stabilized, to another hospital of your choice, by checking them out yourself & drive them to another place.
