Sadly this year's Back Door donuts experience was terrible. It was so underwhelming because the donuts and fritters are lousy...just tasteless dough! Fritters hardly have any apples and less cinnamon. What a let down. And worse...the fritters are now $8 which is a rip off. Lastly, the donuts and fritters dry quickly due to the new recipe. Please BEWARE...been going to MV for 30 years...it was a horrible experience this '24! read more

What happened?!? We've been dreaming of coming back here for 7 years and finally got the chance. Now this is when it was MV Bakery in the front that had a mom and pop feel and Back Door, well, at the back. The double chocolate were dream worthy. We went to order ahead on the website. Nope- disabled. Okay, we're driving from the other side of the island so we'll call. Nope. They have it set up to either give you messages or sends you a text to order which takes you to their ordering platform which is disabled. Nice. We make the trek over and hope for the best. They went in the back and put 6 fresh, warm double chocolates in a box. Oh man, we were salivating! We both bit into it and I immediately only tasted oil. (A tell tale that the oil wasn't hot enough or overcrowded while frying up) I didn't say anything because I didn't want to ruin the experience for the hubby since these are his favorites but I couldn't help noticing he wasn't saying anything either. When I told him he could have mine, he said they tasted different and I said like oil and he agreed. We waited for them to cool down for an hour or so in case it was a temp thing. Nope. Into the trash they went which leaves you real salty after paying $20 for 6 donuts. A few days later, we decided to give a fritter a try. Dough in the middle. Sigh. I was hoping it was one bad day but clearly we didn't have any luck here. I'd encourage a test donut before investing in more than one. read more

Well I would have loved to try their gluten free donuts but even though it's listed on their website for the Oaks Bluff location, they didn't actually carry any GF ones onsite. The employee said I must have been looking at the other location. As you can see from my photo, I was referencing the Oak Bluffs menu. They had one sort of cookie with almonds but I can't have nuts either, so we just left. Please fix your online menu! read more

Their Apple fritter donuts are sooo good!! They open their doors after they close their shop for freshly made, warm donuts most days and they're to die for. I would definitely return. read more

The apple fritter is as big as my head! Easily could split with two people. It had big chunks of apple in them and was so so delicious. They also had gluten free donuts which was great for my wife. We went before the busy season, but I can see how this place gets crowded quick. read more

Well I wish I came at night because apparently that's when all the fun happens! I just went in the day and got some delicious coffee. The inside was a nice vibe and they had cool apparel. THE BEST APPLE FRITTER I HAVE EVER TASTED! My taste buds were alive and enjoying every bite of this huge delight! The real apples were also in large chunka and only added more cooked/baked/fried, I don't know what mode of prep but delicious none the less. So glad that I went back when they opened the back door in the evening. It's was well worth the trip! read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend. I came a little early in the afternoon to get in line. I found the storefront but there were no lights on. After wondering around, I discovered that they sell donuts in the evening right around the block and turn into "Donuts After Dark". 10 min prior to opening, there was already a long line. I could smell the donuts from the kitchen. Mmmm. I ended up getting the apple fritter donut, which was twice as big as my hand. I actually go this to go before dinner, and had to stop myself from eating the whole thing if not I would not have room for dinner. The donut was delicious and hot!!! They do have other kinds of donuts too such as maple bacon, buttercrunch etc. They have a huge whiteboard with the menu so that you can pick what you want to try. I highly recommend coming here if you are in MV! read more

OMG! Delicious isn't enough to describe these donuts. Not only can you smell them down the street, but that's where you'll be standing in line when you visit Back Door after hours! Of course I tried one of each and I don't regret it. They stayed fresh two days after we arrived home from our weekend vacation. Secret: there's a to die for Italian place right across the street, follow your nose. read more

I tried their donuts at the Boston Fenway pop up location because i saw them on the news. The hours were strange, 7pm-midnight, so i tried several donuts and the apple fritters. I was not impressed at all, it did not live up to the hype in my opinion. Better than average donuts because they were fresh but that's about it. Kanes is still my pick for best donuts in MA. read more

It's hard to find good coffee, coffee was great and the chocolate glazed donut was delicious.

Back Door doesn't open until 7pm (stays open til 1am!!), but it looks like the front door is open during the day! We stopped by the front around 5pm on a Saturday and were greeted with a minimal selection of donuts, but FRESH HOT APPLE FRITTERS!! These were absolutely the best apple fritters I've ever had. They're HUGE.. and while you think you may be able to finish one -- I certainly did!! -- think again.. the sweetness definitely builds up. But I LOVE that they put real apple pieces in it. I ate some of it the next day and it was still delish! We returned around 7:30pm to the back door and there was already a line. We only waited less than 10 mins and decided on the apple cider cake donut and boston cream. Unfortunately, I don't think they gave me the apple cider donut because it was super plain and actually kinda dry (sadface) The boston cream was really good though! especially because it was fresh. The chocolate on top is not too sweet, and the dough was perfect! A little too much with the cream inside for me, but the bf loved it. And he's a boston cream FAN. Only wish I had more stomach space to try other flavors read more

CASH ONLY! Donut wait in line for 15 minutes to find out you need cash! Although, if you know MV, you know that cash only places are a plenty. Definitely worth the wait, go with friends and just enjoy the atmosphere and experience. You're not breaking the bank here, it's under $2 for most Donuts, just have fun with it! I'm not really an Apple Fritter kind of person, but you don't need to be, it's just good! It melts in your mouth, hot and fresh! I've also had the Maple Bacon and I felt my arteries clog, but in a good way ‍ One time I went through the front door just to see what it was like in there, it was dead and weird, it felt wrong, do not recommend. read more

Why does this bakery have to be all the way in MV? I'd go back to the island just for the donuts. Amazing flavors, well worth everything including the ferry ride and standing in line at the store. It's crazy how good these donuts are considering the very good prices. All the flavors which we tried were great, especially the Boston creme donut. That's my favorite type of donut so naturally I've had it in a lot of different forms in different places, but Back Door Donuts totally nailed it. The apple fritter was also amazing - think like fried dough but 1000x better, hot and flavorful. Definitely recommend coming here once when you're in MV - I say once because I know you'll want to come back more and more. read more

Amazing apple fritters!!! I was visiting the vineyard with a friend and as we strolled through Oak Bluffs I smelled something delicious. We were in front of Back Door Donuts, but it was 6 PM. A quick google daw arch informed me about Donuts After Dark, and we returned at 6:40 to wait. By the time they opened at 7 PM, the line was crazy! I was excited to try the pizza fritter, but sadly it was not vegetarian. I ordered an apple fritter, cinnamon sugar donut, and Boston cream. The apple fritter was the most massive fritter I've ever seen- granted at almost $6, I would hope it was bug! The fritter was still warm and was amazing. The best apple fritter I've ever had. I have not had the other donuts yet, but the apple fritter surpassed al of my expectations. Highly recommend! read more

Back Door Donuts - Menu for 7/3 - Bakeries Near Me - Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

Pay attention. It's called "Back Door Donuts" cuz they serve the donuts out the BACK DOOR. We spent a little too long standing at the front door wondering why they weren't open at the posted 7pm open time. We saw people walking around eating donuts but figure it out right away. We finally walked around the back of the building and found them. The line moved pretty quick and we had some delicious donuts in no time. They were still warm when we bit into them. Went to back door donuts, but went in through the front door. We happened upon it while walking mid day and noticed I was open. Of course, I took advantage of the fact that there were about three people in the place to get a donut and avoid standing in line at night. The donuts are good, but I wouldn't say that I would go out of my way for one. They have a variety of flavors to choose from. I didn't get to try the apple fritter since it was huge and we had just had lunch. So, if you want to skip the line, go during the day, but if you want the experience, go after the sun sets. read more

Popular spot in Oak Bluffs. Tip for newbies: you got to actually go to the back door for after hours donuts. Get there early as the line gets long. Apple fritter is good but run you $7. If you go after hours, donuts are in a bag. If you go in the morning, you can get them in a box. read more

This was an adorable donut shop in Martha's Vineyard! They have a super cool gift shop with shirts and cups. The maple bacon donut was delicious. However, we weren't big fans of the buttercrunch donut. It was dry and didn't have a ton of flavor. Although we didn't choose wisely on our second donut, we would still recommend that you stop by this shop and grab a donut or two! read more

Back Door Donuts - Maple Bacon and Buttercrunch Donuts - Bakeries Near Me - Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

I come here every summer. I love it every time. The Apple fritter is my favorite. I also LOVE the butternut crunch donut. Before I gave up eating meat, I tried that maple bacon donut and that was amazing as well. You really can't go wrong here lol. The line at night might seem like a bit much. But honestly it's part of the experience. I have purchased donuts during the day at the store front, and to me the donuts always taste better at night. So get your friends, play a game while your in line, get some amazing donuts and enjoy! read more

I had heard the hype behind these donuts and since I was attending a Sox game I figured I'd give this place a shot afterwards. We preordered a few different ones to try for pickup. Upon arrival, we noticed a long line. Fortunately the preorder got us to the front and we got our donuts right away. Unfortunately, they were one of the worst donuts I've had as of recent. They were stale and lacked flavor. I ended up throwing them out. Maybe they had a bad day or these were sitting around for an extended period of time but I will not returning to find out since Boston has a number of better options. read more

The donuts are super good, but the line is absolutely ridiculous. It starts around 7/8pm and wraps all through the parking lot and down the street. I guess it just depends on how badly you want a donut on how long you'll stand there. Best apple fritters on island, 100%. read more

I really like how fresh the donuts taste but the Apple fritter everyone raves about in the comments was fine. The Boston cream pie donut could've been great but the filling tasted like instant vanilla Jello pudding. read more

Will have to update when we can actually go after hours to the back door, but this review is for the store front. The line moved quickly and they had lots of cute souvenirs like shirts, stickers, etc with their logo. As for the donuts they were ok but nothing to write home about. Definitely have to come back for the hot fresh donuts or the fritters another time. We appreciated the small seating area to come and rest for a little before our next stop. read more

Go! Go! Go! This is one of the few late night spots on the vineyard and it's such a treat. It's become a cute tradition and I love going late at night and literally ordering from the back door. You also get a sneak peek of the action inside and they are hustling back there! I get the same thing every time, so I can only speak to the warm apple fritters, but know I do a little dance and snack all the way home. It's delightful and that's it. That's the review. Go get a late night apple fritter (warm preferably) and thank me later . read more

We got in line about 30 minutes before the stored opened at 8 am on a Tuesday in July. The employees work quickly so I would say there's no need to get in line earlier. I felt like people who were #15-20 were out by the time we had finished our donuts. Because we were the first ones in and this was our first time, I felt like we had a lot to choose. I opted for a Boston Cream and a glazed. Both were still warm and both were fluffy. I liked the filling of the Boston Cream donut. My dining companion had a shredded coconut donut and a honey dipped donut. One criticism is the packaging. Because the donuts are warm, any topping sticks t the wax paper and immediately impacts the overall flavor and texture. I don't know what the solution is though. They also sold croissants, muffins, scones, and cookies. Admittedly, these items didn't look as enticing but if you don't want the overly sweet donuts, they make for decent alternatives. read more

I LOVE THE DONUTS!! The people that work there are so sweet, the place is very nice too

when you walk in on a weekend morning and the donut shop is empty, that isn't a good sign. First of all, the staff is very friendly and helpful. I ordered a dozen donuts, and she went in the back to get me hot fresh ones. Having said that, the donuts are ridiculously overpriced, $45 for one dozen and a request for a tip.
