This place has rave reviews ...so even though I'm not a huge donut person...a yelper must do what she is called upon to do. The staff said the apple fritter was the fave...but being the size of a large persons head. There was no way. So I went for the ham and cheese "croissant." Not a croissant, no flaky buttery crust here...but it was a soft buttery bread surrounding which I loved and happily take anyday. I also loved the coconut chocolate donut bc the outside was crispy, the inside was moist. The butter crunch donut was a bit disappointing, it was dry and not too mug flavor. Can't win them all. I was pleasantly surprised on my visit to Martha's Vineyard that Back Door Donuts had gluten free options. It wasn't something I saw listed online or on their menu, maybe I missed it. But my friends went in to get their own donuts and asked the staff for me while they were there if there are ever GF donuts. They told my friends that there absolutely are so we made it our mission the next day to get some. We showed up as probably one of the first 25 people in line. They keep the gluten free donuts in a separate glass case on the front counter away from the other donuts. It's right on top of the register so if you're in line just keep an eye out. I absolutely loved every donut I had but especially the Boston cream. I'm hoping their Boston location adds GF donuts to their online menu so I can get these delivered to my place in Boston. This is truly one of the best gluten free donuts I've ever had and I'm so thankful! read more

If you're hard-pressed to find a bad donut, look no further than Martha's Vineyard! I walked away with a bag of warm oddities in the form of buttermilk and double chocolate donuts. The buttermilk was peculiar tasting and the texture, which should have been akin to an old-fashioned, was also off. Not worth ingesting. The oil-ladened double chocolate had one note: sugar. After learning about Backdoor doughnuts via Instagram, We were so excited to be a part of the back door experience on our recent visit to Martha's Vineyard. We got there about 8pm and waited in line for about Wo minutes to order. Then waited about 15 minutes for our order. We didn't mind though as we considered the wait part of the experience. The doughnuts are $3,$4 and I think $8 for an apple fritter. Not cheap, not too Expensive. They crammed 5 doughnuts in a small brown paper bag. And the apple fritter in a bag by itself. Two of the doughnuts had filling and the filling was completely smooshed out by the time we open the bag. They all were a hot mess when we got back to our hotel and the Apple fritter was in 3 pieces. I was not impressed at all. Usually when we have a delicious treat on vacation we tend to go back to the same place day after day. Needless to say we never went back to Backdoor doughnuts. read more

Can't say I've tried too many apple fritters in my lifetime but Back Door's is about as good as it gets. It was nice and fresh with a crisp exterior and a soft and chewy interior. Lots of apple chunks inside. Be aware that it is huge and can easily be shared by at least two people. Seems like there's always a line but the line goes pretty quickly. read more

What a crowd! Daytime coffee shop turned literal back door doughnut dispensary. That definitely adds to the ambience. The line starts early, gets really long but moves pretty quickly. Many opportunities to chat it up with fellow line attendees and enjoy doughnuts in the parking lot. We read so many good things about this place, we had to try it last time we were in Oak Bluffs. Almost always there's a line, and sure enough, when we went, we had to wait in line for about 20 min to get in and order. We got their famous Apple fritter, which was huge ! Enough for leftovers. The taste was good but not GREAT ! We also got a butter crunch donut and it was a bit on the dry side, not bad but again, not the best we've had. Took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for the day and this was the first stop and now a must go every time we come!! Donuts are fresh and flavorful, but a little pricey. There was no line when we came around 11:30 but would be worth the wait if there was one. Was able to get an apple fritter right out of the oven and I can't describe how good it was. Please update the hours on the off season. Was here and made 2 separate trips thinking they were open. I'm sure it's great as the reviews are amazing but quite frustrating to not even see a sign on the door that they are closed for the season. I'm so sad to write this because I love love love Oak Bluffs and this has been something we have loved for years. A fun experience of waiting out in the dark for fresh donuts, a very unique tradition. But this time we were just so sadly disappointed. The donuts were crazy expensive, tiny (my mother held hers up and we laughed at the ridiculous size of it as she said "is this a lifesaver?") and to be honest the 99 cent donuts at Market basket are far superior in taste. You can easily take a bus, Uber, or drive if you have a car! This place is worth the journey! No excuses! We even waited in line in the rain for this deliciousness! OK, so I am a self-described donut snob. I won't eat the crap that DD produces. I love and support small donut shops. I went to the Back Door on my way back from dinner. Got some hot apple fritters and a glazed old-fashioned. I wish I had waited until the next morning. Old-fashioned was great. This place lives up to the hype. There is a line, that can be quite long, but it goes rather quickly. There is a young man working that politely request that only 2 people wait in your party. This means if you arrive in a group of 4, please divide yourself into two groups, standing six feet apart. The wait was short, we arrived around 815pm, a Thursday evening. Now to the main event. The donuts are unique and are delivered in a bag, still warm. The Apple fritter was the highlight for me. It's a huge fritter, bigger than the size of your hand. Ordered a birthday cake and total DISASTER. First, the man who answers the phone needs to find another line of work. He was annoyed to have to answer basic questions like what flavors do you have. Second, the day we went to pick up the cake THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT. Never mind that they take your credit card when you order and threaten to charge you if you don't pick up. But the ONE THING they had to do -MAKE THE CAKE- they didn't actually do. No birthday cake at all. No excuse. I've been to MV on 2 separate long weekends and have managed to hit up BDD every day at least once if not twice in one day! I wish there was one in Boston, but then again.. that could be very dangerous for my health! No diabetes pleazz! In the back there usually is a line, but don't be deterred, the line moves relatively quickly and gives you a chance to look over the menu and decide which donuts you want! I also got an iced latte, and they brew La Colombe products which give it such a smooth taste and texture.
