    Sunset with the dolphins!

Captain Tom is fantastic! We have used Back Bay Tours for three sunset cruises and have had a wonderful yet different experience each time. It has been the icing on the cake for our out of town guests. The last cruise we encountered porpoises/dolphin! Bring a cooler, bring some friends, and have a great time!

As you can see from my prior review in August 2023 I love this place. I love to kayak with my…read morefamily. I was here again with my same family of five including two elementary school children. This time I rented two double kayaks for 1 hour at $30 each or $60 total. I also rented one single kayak for one hour or $20. Our total cost was $80 for two doubles and one single kayak in total. This time we traveled south in the bay since the current was moving North. That made it easier for us to kayak back to the kayak base. We returned within one hour. I also purchased a Coastal Kayak hoodie for $40. We agreed we will return here again.

I showed up on the day of my arrival and rented a 10" board with no problems. FYI - the 10" board fit in my compact-size SUV with the headrests removed, front seat down and fin removed. The rental included a paddle and the board also had a leash. I had my own Coast Guard approved lifejacket. I also booked the Burton Island's wildlife guided tour which was a 2-hour tour thru the salt marsh around Burton's Island. Bob (our guide) gave a quick "kayaking 101" before we started and off we went. We had 8 total in our group which was a perfect size for the tour. On the tour we observed ospreys, lots of different types of sea gulls, cormorants who use the bay as a runway before taking off into the blue sky, horseshoe crabs, teeny-tiny fiddler crabs no bigger than a quarter, and little turtles popping up to see what was going on as we were paddling thru the marsh. Bob is a great tour guide with lots of info about the area and wildlife. The meeting point for the tour is the Burton Island's trail head located on the north end of the Indian River Marina inside the Delaware Seashore State Park. For me, it was a short15 minute drive from where I was staying in Fenwick Island. Price wise - the tour and SUP rental were quite reasonable. I will definitely rent from Coastal Kayak the next time I'm in Fenwick Island.

1 Star - Absolutely Awful Experience…read more Island Water Sports gave us one of the worst customer service experiences we've ever had. As we were pulling into the dock -- after being stuck in torrential downpours all day because they refused to offer a rain check unless there was thunder -- a staff member started shouting at us, "I hope you have insurance! You've damaged my ladder!" The swim ladder had accidentally been left down, but it was already damaged when we took the boat out. Even after staff inside the office confirmed the damage had been noted earlier, the dockhand, Mike, continued to accuse us and treated us like we had done something wrong. They made us stay in the boat while they took pictures and called it in to the office, repeatedly telling us we were going to have to pay for it. When we were finally allowed off, some of our group went to use the bathroom and were stopped on their way back by another employee, who told them they "weren't allowed to leave." It felt like we were being detained -- over a broken ladder we didn't even damage. At one point I told Mike how rude and unprofessional he was -- and no, I wasn't calm about it. I had every right to speak up after the way we were being treated. Instead of diffusing the situation, he came back at me, even more defensive and condescending. It wasn't until after they embarrassed us and treated us like criminals in front of other guests that we finally got a weak apology. Then, as if that wasn't enough, they actually complained that there was mud on the floorboard from the anchor -- because it had touched the wet deck. First of all, don't they wash the boats down anyway? And second, it was pouring rain all day -- what exactly did they expect? We didn't even complain about the miserable weather -- we paid in full and left without so much as a "Sorry the weather didn't cooperate" or "Hope you still had a good time." Just attitude and accusations. We've rented from other marinas in the area and always had a great experience. Island Water Sports was by far the worst -- rude, accusatory, and completely lacking in basic customer service. I would never rent from them again and absolutely do not recommend them to anyone!

Staff was friendly and courteous when we arrived, and the boat was in tip-top shape. The one-star knock is because they did not have a restroom available for us before our trip, which meant we had to leave the premises for a Royal Farms, then return. Granted we didn't lose a lot of time, but a restroom for clients, even if it's a porta potty, I feel is a necessity.

I honestly had no idea what this was until I decided to make a stop. In fact, when I pulled into the parking area I wasn't sure where to park as there are signs stating something about permits. I will say, and this is my only gripe about this place, is the price of admission. I think it's a bit high for what you are getting. But I guess you need to pay the bills for this. This place kind of takes you back in time. See, back before this area had roads connecting to each other and when shipping was a huge thing, they had to have patrols that would make sure everything was ok. These patrols would head out to save people on the high seas when the high seas were less than cooperative. Kind of a precursor of the Coast Guard. This location is on the National Registry of Historic Places. This was a quick museum visit, but that is partly because I was impatient and didn't want to use the video tour. They do have a tour where you call in and type in a code for an exhibit and it would give you the information, but you can also read a lot of it within on the information placards next to the items. Points of interest is the house itself, living quarters, equipment used and the highlight is the access to the beach. It's amazing to think that men, year after year, would come here and serve time protecting people. It was some really tight quarters and they never knew what the seas might hold for them. Tip, be careful if you head out to the beach. I had taken my sandals off to walk into the sand and something jabbed my toe. That made for a quick return for me. Before you do head back get a look at the view. It is beautiful.

Then you proceed to the main house where the rescuers lived and you're able to see and touch everything, which is amazing to me- there are very few things in cases. There is a number you can dial to hear a narration about a specific object or area of the house as you walk thru. The gift shop is full of lovely trinkets and they have bathrooms, which is very convenient for roadtrippers like myself. Great for everyone but small kids will need to be watched to ensure they don't grab and break anything, and that they don't fall down the narrow staircase.
