This review is given from a different prospective - from the spouse. My wife, for MANY years, has endured a great deal of pain and suffering during her monthly cycle. We went to doctor after doctor - all but one were unsympathetic. (The one doctor did what she could but suggested we talk to Dr. Backus to take it to the next level.) Some doctors blamed my wife's problems on her weight and summarily dismissed her issue. Others said it was a pain tolerance issue - 'take more advil and deal with it' seemed to be their attitude. Yet my wife was out of commission for at least two weeks every month! Dr. Backus drew up an action plan. Over the course of about a year and a half we worked with her until it was clear what the cause of her problems were. We were confident with the diagnosis as her action plan was very logical and well thought out. In the end Dr. Backus resolved the root cause of the pain and my wife now leads a greatly improved life. Going to have your yearly "lady exam" is not anything that any woman looks forward to, really. I found Dr. Bachus through my heath insurance booklet of doctors covered by my insurance. I just opened the page and pointed to one. I just wanted to get it over with. Well, as it ended up, I totally had to write a Yelp review because I was so happy with Dr. Bachus. I want Yelp readers to know that your yearly exam doesn't have to be traumatic or even mildly unpleasant. I was happy to get an appointment for the very next day, and the woman on the phone who made the appointment was pleasant and professional. The office was easy to find and I was called in to see the doctor right away-no waiting! The room was warm and cozy (there is nothing fun about being naked in stirrups in a freezing cold room -which has been my experience in other gyno offices). This one was warm, so I was happy. There was even a heater at the foot of the cozy exam chair (no scary table, but more of a Lazy-Boy). No having to be told to "scoot down". There was no interrogation lighting, either, like in most ob/gyn offices. Dr Bachus was so incredibly nice. She put me at ease right away. I felt comfortable talking to her, and the exam was painless and super-fast. The paper clothing was even a cute shade of pink. Everything combined made it a great experience. I have been going here for a few years and was recommended to Bachus by friends. I agree Dr Bachus is an awesome doctor herself but her staff is not so pleasant. It is true thay most places you go they just want your money. I was diagnosed and was informed by Dr Bachus and a another staff member that I could email on my questions through the portal or could simply call the office then they wanted me to come in to get my questions answered. But because i took the doctors time ( which I 100% agree) i had to pay $68. When I was literally there for 10 mins. I have recommended many women to this facility but after this I am not so sure. I just spoke with their office staff member by the name I will not mentiom but is a male and he said I had to pay regardless even though I was given the info right from DR Bachus mouth that I could "call her anytine or emaik my questions" What you hear is true....they just want your money. read more

When I moved to Austin several years ago I had no idea which OB to use. I come from a long medical background, and am super picky about who I see and how I am treated by the office staff. I saw another OB when I first moved here, and hated the staff so I never went back. I love Dr. Bachus and her staff! She has an amazing bed-side manner and is very calming and easy to talk to. Her staff is always helpful, and quick to respond to emails and phone calls. Even though Dr. Bachus and her staff are unaware of my medical background, they never "talk down" to me as if I won't understand medical terminology. Dr. Lois Bachus is not professional, her staff is rude, and I would never recommend A Woman's Place. The office staff makes you feel like you're inconveniencing them by trying to schedule an appointment time that is convenient for you (I really don't think "towards the beginning of the day, near lunchtime, or towards the end of the day" is asking a lot). When I had my one and only appointment with Dr. Bachus, it was the standard stuff. Nothing that would make me want to recommend her to a friend, but nothing terrible. She asked me if I was planning on pregnancy, and when I said yes, within this year, she didn't seem to have anything relevant to say other than "oh." I felt a little put off by that, since in my mind, getting pregnant is a big deal and something that an OBGYN should comment on. On to my second appointment. I called for a reminder of exactly where they were located off 290 (it had been a year since my first appointment) and to let them know I would be 10 minutes late--I got caught up as I was leaving work. Well, when I arrived 10 minutes late as warned, I got a cold reception, which I was not too surprised by since I was a little late. I noticed that my new health insurance card was not in my wallet (I only had the dental insurance card on me), and I apologized and asked what I could do. The front desk girl said that they couldn't see me without my information, unless I paid the un-insured price. They would not budge on letting me call in my information as soon as I got home, or letting me run home to get my information. I said I would pay the full price of a check-up, $90, because I didn't want to have to take another afternoon off work. In the meantime, I said I would run out to my car to grab my phone while I was waiting, so I could try to get my insurance information from Humana over the phone. When I got back in the waiting room about 30 seconds later, the rude front desk girl called me over and said, "I just spoke to the doctor, we need to re-schedule your appointment because you've gone outside of the 15-minute window." So I asked what time it was, and she said 3:16. Only one minute after the window, and I'd already been in the waiting room talking with the front desk person for 5 minutes. So, I take off work in the middle of the afternoon, drive through 3 school zones to get to my appointment, call to let them know as soon as I realize that I'm running a few minutes late, am treated rudely when they see that I'm missing my insurance information (admittedly a stupid mistake, but I cannot believe the way it was handled), and am told to re-schedule even though I offered to pay the un-insured, full price. Well, I will re-schedule, but with a different doctor. On a positive note, I learned that I should not be trusting important things like the birth of a child to a rude, inconsiderate, clearly self-important person like Dr. Lois Bachus. read more

I saw Dr. Bachus today for a IUD placement, which is a fairly uncomfortable procedure and I was a little nervous. I would have appreciated a doctor who was kind and showed the slightest bit of compassion. Dr. Bachus was one of the rudest, most disrespectful physicians I have ever seen. I am an RN, so I see many of them. I was 7 minutes late to my appointment due to a very tragic accident with one of my pets. I'm surprised that I made it at all and I did my very best to get there on time. I called on my way and apologized profusely for being a little late. Dr. Bachus stormed in the room, stood over me with her arms crossed, and raised her voice at me about how I was late. I was in tears by the time I left her office. I'm not sure if I have ever been treated with such disrespect in a professional setting. read more

Do not go here! I called around for pricing because I don't have insurance and the staff told me a price I was comfortable with and seemed nice. During my visit I simply talked to Dr. Bachaus about my symptoms from being off birth control for 4 months and we came to no conclusion other than I should just wait longer to see if my body gets normal again. Then I went and paid. A week later I received a bill asking for more money. When I called to ask the man that I spoke to was a total jerk. He told me that he let me keep the extra money for a week, and that I was lucky, and that the staff was bad at math, as that's why I was charged less. I asked that they help cover the additional cost because it was their error and he made some ridiculous grocery store analogy that I'd still have to pay for food. What a tool. I will not be back here for my annual, even though I thought this place was a good fit for me. read more

Moving to a new city and having only previously gone to the doctor my mom told me to go to, I was super nervous about finding my own gynecologist, based on reviews alone. Although my experience in the waiting room was stressful (i.e., the receptionist telling me my insurance was invalid, and then having to call my insurance company and get everything straightened out, only to find out that the receptionist put in an incorrect ID), everything else was great. The nurse was quick and efficient, and Dr. Bacchus was such a sweet woman who really knows how to relieve the stress of an uncomfortable visit. She was fast and helpful in answering any questions, and I will definitely be coming to her once a year. read more

I've been to Dr. Bachus' office 2-3 times now, but I will definitely not be going back! My insurance is forcing me to receive my birth control and synthroid medications through Express Scripts unless I want to pay full price. I was told by Express Scripts that I needed to obtain a new prescription from my doctor before they could send me my medicines-- even though I had 7 more months on my original prescription (stored at CVS) that Dr. Bachus wrote earlier that year. After playing phone tag with the nurse for 2 weeks and paying full price for my medications because of the delay, I decided to drive to their office and get the nurse to approve my medicines. She assured me that everything was fine and that they would handle it. I get a call the next day from Express Scripts informing me that Dr. Bachus only prescribed me birth control for 3 months (even though I still have 7 months worth banked at CVS). She didn't even write a prescription for my SYNTHROID. I'm not sure if you know about hypothyroidism, but I've had it since I was born and MUST take it every day. Don't you think that is a little more important than birth control? That being said, I never did receive my synthroid prescription and I'm forced to go to another doctor, get my blood drawn and have them call in a new prescription--- all because Dr. Bachus and her team are incompetent. All in all, this office and Dr. Bachus are EXTREMELY unprofessional and do not want to help you after your initial visit. I'm never going back and I wouldn't recommend any of you going. read more

Great Doctor. Have been a patient since 2001. Have had a few health issues and she knows her stuff, has great attention to detail and asks the right questions. She will answer all your questions, help you deal with your issues and I never feel I am rushed or taking up too much time. Staff is friendly and efficient. To Vivian O reviewer...when your late, don't have your insurance card and generally don't have your stuff together, don't expect a Doctor's office to make everyone else with appointments after you pay for your lack of preparation. I LOVE Dr. Bachus. I have been seeing her for about 15 years and she delivered one of my children. She is thorough and is completely willing to talk through any issues you might be having. I am not a big fan of doctors in general and I don't really like having strangers touch me. Dr. Bachus understood all of this from the beginning and always walks me through what she is doing/why. She is warm and caring and I can't imagine having a different gynecologist. I don't remotely live close to her current office and I drive in the 30 plus miles every year to see her. read more

Dr. Bachus was recommended to me by my mother, so I know if she get mom's approval, it's going to be a well researched decision. Even though we're all pretty used to annual exams, they can still be very unpleasant, but Dr. Bachus makes you feel very comfortable and cared for. As a first time patient, I didn't have to wait long at all in the lobby, and the office is very communicative with their services. You can get all your results online quickly also. I have been a patient of Dr. Bachus for nearly 10 years, and only have glowing recommendations of her. Dr. Bachus has always treated me with respect and high quality care, and has put me more at ease than any other OBGYN I have been to (and there've been a few). I have had to undergo some unpleasant treatments with her, and she has been very comforting and encouraging throughout it all. Not to mention her amazing chair, that does not require you to scoot!!! I have referred five friends to Dr. Bachus/A Woman's Place, all who have been extremely satisfied with their experience in the office. I have been seeing Dr. Bachus for 10 years and I couldn't say enough good things about her. I have recommended her to many friends over the years. She has great bed-side manner, her staff is efficient and they take almost every insurance - as I've moved jobs, I never had to worry about finding a new provider. She's not judgy; she doesn't talk down to her patients at all. She gives you all the information you need and lets you make the decision. She's helped me overcome an issue or two over this time and I'm very grateful. Back when I was less-than responsible, she replaced my lost birth control packs a couple times with samples she had on hand to help me out. Now I'm pregnant and sad that I have to leave her temporarily to find an obstetrician. I hope i find a doctor as caring and competent as Dr. Bachus to see me through my pregnancy. read more

Dr. Lois A Bachus is unprofessional, a total B, and could benefit from some bedside manner. I have been going to A Women's Place seeing a wonderful doctor, Dr. Nancy Turner, for about 7 years. Dr Turner and Dr Bachus are the 2 physicans at A Womens Place and I had little experience with Dr Bachus until now. I had an issue and was in the middle of my period and tried to make an appointment with Dr Turner. She was on vacation but they told me Dr Bachus could see me. Great! Dr. Bachus was hostile right out of the gate (and it was first thing on a Monday). Was she was having a bad day? I would assume so. Right away she accused me of not really being a patient of Dr. Turner's because I've haven't had an appointment in awhile. True, but did I sneak in, come in under false pretenses? No. Did I call in and make an appointment like a normal person? Yes. It was true for some time I did not have any insurance and so I went to planned parenthood. Gasp, the horror! (Because duh, when you don't have any insurance that is cheaper. With all of the normal lab fees you can pay a fortune.) She was hostile and judgmental the whole exam... because of me going to other OBGYN's ? I couldn't tell maybe she was just an angry woman. I was scared and worried about going into the doctors office and her behavior was so unfounded it made me even more uneasy. Why would it matter where I was going for my exams? I was going and isn't that what doctors usually want? Besides I was back now in her office NOW. The whole thing was crazy. If this was my first experience with A Women's Place there is no way in hell I would of gone back. But luckily Dr Turner, the front desk and nursing staff is professional and always fabulous to work with. I was waiting to write this review because I thought maybe Dr. Bachus was just having a bad day. But even so that's no reason to treat me like that. Seems like a common trend on here that Dr. Bacchus is condescending, lacking compassion, and just plain mean. She was rude to me last year at my check up but I have her another chance but after my appointment today I will be switching. She talked to me like I was completely below her and in a manner with which I have never been spoke to before. Don't even give her a chance, find someone who can be kind. read more

Not sure what has happened with Dr. Bachus but after my mother's visit there today I will no longer be seeing this doctor either. She has moved locations and it appears to be a huge step down in appearance from her office location last year. Possibly she is near retirement and is expressing that eagerness to be done with the business to her patients. My mother has seen her before and said this was a 180 degree difference and not for the better. Now after reading the latest reviews I really have to question what is going on with her practice. Sorry to say that I will not be returning to her. She was a great doctor the past few years but something has truly changed with her and not for the better. I hope she finds her happiness again and if that means retirement then spare everyone from her current unhappiness. Moving on to a better doctor. Wish I could put a negative. I have been seeing Dr. Bachus for 3 years now. After each visit I have left feeling leery of her recommended treatment or lack of treatment. Many friends and family have told me to walk away from her, yet I continued to give her the benefit of the doubt. Twice now I have followed up with her after emergency room visits- for conditions she refused to address BEFORE they became urgent. She is either not present or simply does not take the time to return phone calls or follow up with her patients to discuss their well being. She even accused ME of not following up on a treatment...until I nicely reminded HER. .that I indeed received the treatment and furthermore, SHE was the professional that performed the procedure! She actually argued me down before getting off her duff and reading my chart. Either she has been in the business too long or views her patients as cattle. But her lack of attentiveness made me quite literally...run for my life and find a competent doc. I do NOT recommend this woman. read more

I've been seeing Dr Bachus for a while now and I thought she was good. But the last time I went to see her, they screwed up on my appointment time telling me when I made the Appointment 9:30 a.m and when they called me to confirm my 9:30 am appointment I was there 10 minutes early, I sag and watched people go in and out why past my appointment time I asked the receptionist if they had forgotten about that's when she said your appointment wasn't until. 10:30 I told her no way that they had told me twice it was 9:30 am, I was then to,d that her new policy was that she saw no one until the appointment time, even though there wasn't anyone there. When I finally got in at 10:35 I brought if up to her and she told me that they had a new computer system and that what we had to live with, as if that was a good excuse for not caring about a patient waiting. When I finally got into the room, I told her my endocrinologist told me I should come in and get a hormone test, she laughed it off and handed me estrogen. Estring, saying her you go try it out, my health history clearly shows that my Mother, Grandmother and Aunt all died of Cancer. And that was done in less than 10 minutes. Thanks for nothing. I will find someone else that truly cares, and pays attention. read more
