Expectations were high and the meal started strong with a strong bread that came with a cream-cheese sort of spread and a fancy, herb-infused salt. I started with potato pancakes with smoked salmon, dill, and mustard sauce. For my main, I went brisket with horseradish cream sauce and potatoes. The date started with the meat broth and bone marrow dumplings and her main was local wild boar sausages with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. To start, as I've noted elsewhere, the Germans really know their potatoes and perfectly prepared every iteration we tried. The potato pancakes were shredded, buttery, great potato pancakes. The salad and salmon were all very good, perhaps trying a bit too hard on presentation. The date's dumpling soup was okay. The broth could've had more umami impact and you didn't get much essence of bone marrow in the dumplings. My brisket could have been tenderer and it was smothered in the horseradish sauce (I would've preferred it on the side). There was no heat in the horseradish sauce. This is apparently their most popular dish. It was fine. The date's sausages were salty, rich, and super heavy - even though there were only two, she could only finish one. Our server would later say it was a hard dish for women to finish. 3.4 rounded up to 3.5 rounded up. read more
