Bacchus is a funky, cool little spot located in the heart of Golden and is an absolute must visit if you find yourself in the area. It is an eclectic bookstore with a variety of local gifts and goods from local artists. There is also a little café upstairs that sells coffee and small bites to eat. We enjoyed a nice afternoon coffee upstairs, surrounded by shelves of books and thoroughly enjoyed taking it all in. We ended up purchasing some postcards, birthday cards, and other local goods made by some awesome Canadian artists. Definitely check this spot out! read more

Very good food. My husband read the menu and said there wasn't anything he wanted but he ended up loving the Thai chicken bowl. I was very happy with the Glory Bowl, a vegan quinoa bowl full of whole-foody goodness. There doesn't seem like much space as the cafe is upstairs in the midst of the used book section of the bookstore. But there were several tables for 2-3, and we fit 4 at ours. I was recently stuck in Golden for more than a few days when returning home from Vancouver, and I have to say, Bacchus Books was a lifesaver in terms of how I spent my time. Upon entering Bacchus, you're immediately struck by how many great books they have in the shop. Regardless of the size of Golden, Bacchus would be a welcome addition to any hip neighbourhood in a city 10 times it's size. They obviously care about what they stock. Ascending the stairs in the back, you'll find yourself with more books and a cafe as well. There's plenty of home-made organic and vegetarian options. The special I had was a curried chickpea lunch and it made for an inexpensive (less than $10) and filling meal. The cookie I had for dessert was also a chocolately, chewy delight. Perfect for making me forget I'd been trapped in town for the past 3 days. The upstairs books are a collection of new and used, a thrift store book shoppers dream for sure. On pretty much any subject imaginable, I saw everything from Canadian Road Guides from the 70s to leatherbound literary anthologies. Bacchus also features free wifi. Free and also free as in you don't have to purchase anything to use it. A nice touch. This generous disposition also extends to the books, you can read anything you like for as long as you want before purchasing. Book prices are reasonable for the used and new. As well, all the used books were in great condition so there's obviously some quality control on what they accept. If you're in Golden (hopefully by choice), make a stop at Bacchus to read, grab a coffee, or for something to eat while you read. Indeed, when I emphatically thanked the ownership for his hospitality and wished his unique business well, he smiled and replied "Well, we definitely have more customers from out of town then in town". read more

Full of full page photos featuring cats in space, clouds, fields of munchies and so much more, this one epic find if you make a stop at Bacchus Books. Essential stop while in Golden if you like reading. As others have said it's eclectic with a great selection of books that will satisfy a pretty wide variety of wishes. On off days or after skiing it's great to stop in and browse around and see what you can find. I happened upon Yvon Chouinard's Let My People Go Surfing here on my first visit and knew this place was special. The book store in Invermere never carried any rad books - the drive to Golden always meant a stop in here. read more

Just passing through Golden and we decided to stop for espresso. Not many choices for that here. The latte was average. Tasted good but a bit foamy white. Seemed to lack creme but still good. Café is up stairs. The soup smelled terrific and the blueberry muffins looked fantastic. This is totally an eclectic shop. Nothing matches but that's o k. When you are in Golden so i guess the choice for things here is limited. Came here during a camping trip to get some much needed coffee. Ordered two cappuccinos...it wasn't the best. The coffee was quite acidic and strong and had very little flavour. Sugar was needed to drink it and dare I say, I would've preferred having Tim Horton's over this. The atmosphere is really nice however, and they do have free wifi which is a huge plus especially when you need to kill some time. The staff at the cafe portion....needs a hug or something as the service during the day we went wasn't the friendliest. Maybe she was having a bad day. read more

And, the added enticement of a tiny coffee shop and restaurant on the second floor, gently nestled midst the shelves of books. What fun is that? Came here for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is great. The farm breakfast bagel was absolutely delicious. The lattes were very good. The only down side would be that depending how busy it gets the wait time can be a little long as there was only one person responsible for making all the food and drinks. Let's start by stating that we ate three days in a row at the cafe and would have done it a fourth time if we had stayed another day! We read about Bacchus Cafe before we went in and we were intrigued by the various write-ups, we were just not prepared for how right they got everything. The bookstore inhabits the entire two story structure. Neither modestly sized nor a super-store, it's like Baby Bear's porridge - it's just right. The selection of old and dusty titles and brand spanking new ones is just right as well. The owner is the buyer and, like all good booksellers, he has an eye for it and is "in the know!" The staff is helpful and friendly - for the most part. And the store offers much more than a great selection of books = mugs (even mugs by local artists) gifts, cards, etc. It's a one stop shop! At the upstairs cafe they work some rare magic with 8 tables set among the shelves of books - I loved that the various shelves create little snugs for one to enjoy the food, drink and conversation - taking for granted you have chosen to go there with a friend gifted in the art of conversation like JP. They also have a few seats at a bar. They serve what I consider to be a BIG menu - salads - nice ones like a Thai Chicken Salad - perfectly and piquantly flavored and filled with greens and noodles and mandarin orange slices - a real winner! - or their Glory Bowl filled with well-marinated tofu and quinoa and vegetables, well-dressed in a moreish sauce - I want some as I write this! Their panini (is panini the plural of panini?) are top rung as well - their CBC - chicken, brie and cranberry - was a delicious concoction as well as their Reuben panini - well cheesed, well pastrami-ed, well sauerkraut-ed - again I was surprised they got it so very right! Their Carrot Ginger Soup was one of the best examples of it we have ever tasted. I had their Mocha (twice) and a London Fog (once) all were (dare I say it again) just right! Now on to the baked goods! They are exceptional! By any standard, they are worth a trip to Bacchus Cafe alone. They have a chocolate slice - a sort of nut bar - large and stuffed with coconut and pumpkin seeds that is one of the best things I have ever eaten and their take on the Nanaimo Bar is superb! We are from Los Angeles and were not familiar with Nanaimo - BUT WE ARE NOW! HOORAY! At Bacchus Cafe the Nanaimo Bar is a perfectly portioned cup - and it is WONDERFUL! Between eating them in and taking more to our VRBO we had 7 of them over three days! Yes, they were THAT GOOD! We also had a great strawberry cup with a chocolate base and strawberry flavored ricotta. Another winner! And their Lox Stock n' Bagel was so good I wanted another after I had just finished my first! I think you can tell we loved the place. And it felt - and people treated it like - the town center - a place to meet friends, have some terrific food and drink, and buy some very well chosen books...a perfect find in Golden! read more
