The chicago version, at Second City, is not what is advertised. First, there is no full, live band. It's a single guy on a synthesizer. Second, the quality of the performance depends on the group/cast members. We saw it yesterday, and two of the six objectively had no business singing anything. Third, the group was not very good at improv. Titled, "worst first date ever," they picked up on a "big dick" theme and carried it for the full hour. An hour of dick jokes..... not even very good ones. Pretty lame. This is my third time at Second city state in six years - as opposed to going a lot 20 years ago. The quality overall has gone WAY DOWN. Pressure to keep all the stages running for all shows? Who knows. But there are definitely better ways to spend your entertainment dollars read more

One of the things I love about Yelp is that it makes me aware of things I might have never known about. "Baby wants Candy" is such a thing. Improv done to music? How'd they do that? Improv always impresses me as I think I think well on my feet but then I go to one of these improv shows and realize that I am OK at best. The premise of Baby wants Candy is that they solicit an idea from the audience, and then proceed to do a one hour musical from that one idea. Seriously! With a band and everything. While I suspect the score of music doesn't change much- I love that one of the players steps up after a couple of opening bars and begins belting out a song. Then the others join in on the chorus and actually sing harmony How'd they do that? They also make the show have a plot that keeps it hanging together which is often not the case with "regular improv" (is there such a thing?) which are usually a series of small vignettes. Check Baby wants Candy out. The show is always different and you'll be sitting there like I did wondering "How'd they do that?" read more

If you've got asthma bring your inhaler, this show is guaranteed to make you wheeze! I heard about BWC several years ago from a childhood friend whose brother-in-law was/is(?) part of the troupe. I filed the info somewhere in the back of head as something cool I should do and then pretty much forgot all about it. It wasn't until way after I'd RSVP'd and I realized that BWC was musical improv that I made the connection (I know sometimes I can be a little slow). Do you remember the nursery rhyme about the little girl with the curl right in the middle of her forehead? Well, just like that...when improv is good, it is very good; when improv is bad it is horrid OK maybe it doesn't go exactly like that, but it's true - bad improv is like some form of cruel and unusual punishment, thankfully I didn't have to worry about that here. Baby Wants Candy was a hilarious good time. An hour-long Christmas-themed improv musical, I was in awe. The cast was really talented, creative and quick-thinking; it had me laughing so hard I had break out the inhaler (discreetly of course). The icing on the cake is that they sell alcohol at the theater too, and it's reasonably priced. If you get drinks, get enough to last the entire show, getting in and out discreetly isn't really an option. Bottom line: Good times and lots of laughs. Since the audience dictates the theme of the musical, every show is unique. Check it out, it's a great way to cure a case of the Mondays. read more

We were standing in the lobby waiting to be admitted into the Apollo Theater when I noticed the scowl on my fiance's face. I asked what's wrong and he informed me that he doesn't like improv and it was late (he's getting to be a very old man if he thinks 10:30 PM on a friday night is late). 20 minutes later he was laughing hysterically and at the end of the show he was begging the talented actors for more...he may not like improv, but he sure liked Baby Wants Candy! I too was pleasantly surprised by Baby Wants Candy, although I had a feeling I was in for a treat after reading all the Yelp reviews! The show starts by asking for a title of a musical and last night's was "slutty santa". And the spontaneous musical they put on was absolutely hysterical! I kept asking my fiance...how do they do that??? Genius, I tell ya...these people are geniuses! Best of all, it's a new show every Friday night so I can keep going and going...and I plan to! Thanks for the laughs! read more

Go see it. Improv Musical....what?! I don't know how they pulled it off, especially our feature for the night--"Auld Lang Zombie." That's right, zombie. They even somehow tied in a British talking monkey. Hilarious. As for improv, there's a nice honesty coming from people being spontaneously witty and humorous. The troop onstage just clicked even during the times of complete collapse. They spun it like a Seinfeld episode and made fun of one another to keep the flow going. I've heard others say the cast that I caught were much better than other variations. Can't speak to it but hopefully you'll get lucky and catch a great group. On the whole, you'll have a good time and the Apollo is such a nice space for this. Erica Elam is a such a talent. She makes the best drunk girl I've ever seen and really stood out amongst the pack. I looked around and hardly saw a dry face. I took some snaps so check those out. :) They'll tell this story better. read more

My friends and I had a blast here. I've heard so-so things about musical improv, but I found this experience incredibly fun. I like improv and am somewhat picky, but this was pretty fabulous. Clever, funny, outrageous...what's not to like? Bar is cash only and you can bring your drinks to the show. It's a small, intimate theater, but you're not squashed in. The actors are insanely smart to be able to make up songs on their feet. They commit to what they're doing and the show is a big success as a result. Go check it out, unless you hate to laugh...in which case I wouldn't know how to help you :( read more

There isn't much that can be said about Baby Wants Candy that hasn't already been said in previous reviews. But I figure I'll reiterate a few things and tell about my personal experience. The night I went to see Baby Wants Candy, it was a free program in my dorm. I was like "Baby Wants Candy? What the heck is that?" Somehow, though, I was dragged along. I was mostly just reluctant because I had no idea what it was and no one else seemed to know either... and I'm often suspicious of titles that tell you nothing about what they are (though I'm suspicious of a lot of things). I believe the title that was chosen was "Real Housewives of Chicago," or something to that effect. I was like, "okay, how can they make this into an hour-long musical and still make it funny?" They somehow managed! There was probably one song where I was thinking, "okay, move it along, next scene," but hey, it's improv. I know I don't have a tenth of the talent that these people have and I was very, very entertained. The story that night somehow managed to involve British-accented orphans living in a basement who wound up rising up against the housewives that enslaved them. When the first scene with the orphans happened I was like, "okay, what does this have to do with housewives again?" They managed to tie it into the plot, though, and made it make sense... in its own twisted way. A splendid time was had by all. Then again, I love musicals and improv, so maybe I'm just biased. read more

I STAND CORRECTED! Ok, so the first time I went I was with a piss poor sport crowd, it was late, they were drunk and old (aka, sleeping), and complaining the entire time. Second time...MUCH BETTER! I think it greatly depends on the crowd you are with, the friends you bring, etc. Well, gather 100 or so yelpers...and it's bound to be a fantastic time...and it was! They were honestly...HYSTERICAL. I was laughing my curmudgeon little ass off...and I was completely, totally, abhorrently SOBER. It was just funny. Seriously... I can admit when I am wrong, and I was. Baby Wants Candy is good stuff. I'd definitely go back again...imrprov is no easy feat, but they know how to put on a fantastic show. And, I loved the holiday theme, because...I'm a nerd like that. And, I don't care...so don't judge me! Well done...highly recommended...I challenge you to find a better show playing on a Monday night at that price point! read more

Straight talkin' - I laughed my buttocks off! It has been a while since I've been to an improv show and this one makes me wonder why I haven't been to many more! I like this one more because it was a musical improv show and I thought it would have been more difficult to pull off. The cast did well and sure made me laugh! Quite impressive I must say. The best thing about this type of production is that I can find myself coming back for another go at it as improv certainly implies a different show every time. read more

I make no secret of the fact that I am improv-phobic. There's so much improv in this city, and so much of it is so bad. I have two main problems with most of the improv I see. 1) The performers are so desperate for laughs that everything else goes out the window. 2) The cast seems more interested in playing for each other than for the audience. I'm glad you're having fun up there, but we paid for the tickets. I'm happy to report that Baby Wants Candy -- or at least the one show I saw -- does not suffer from these problems. If you've read other reviews, you know how the show works -- the cast improvises an hour long musical based on audience suggestions. There are benefits to this format. First, with the long-form improv, the cast has to figure out how to make scenes connect, and to progress throughout a story. This keeps them from going down the "funny for funny's sake" road. Second, the musical format gives them with an overall structure, while keeping them on their toes, so they can't just screw around. This is harder to do than standard improv, but it makes it more rewarding for the audience. At least if the audience is me. Which is not to say that the show isn't funny. It is, and for me, it's more funny, because it's more controlled. And while some scenes come out of the blue, it's the job of the cast to integrate them back into the show. Last night's show had what could have been a completely superfluous scene about hobos, but the cast was good enough to turn it into an important plot point. Does it always work? Of course not. But every time I was about to get impatient, the cast pulled it back together. And that made it work for me. read more

The last time that I went to an improv show, it was the mid-90's! It was so bad that I have stayed away since last night when I saw Baby Wants Candy. These people thoroughly impressed me! This is how they are working it right now for the holidays; Someone in the audience suggests a holiday theme. The cast then acts out an hour long musical on the fly. Last night they kept the laughs coming and kept a grin on my face all night. Since the theme changes each show, every holiday show is going to be different. I would love to go back and I would recommend this to anyone read more

You know that feeling of being happy because someone you love is just laughing their butt off? That feeling of seeing them utterly enjoy something, that you cannot help but laugh yourself and laugh harder because they are so entertained? Well, I would like to personally thank Baby Wants Candy for allowing me to have that feeling. Not only did they make me giggle with glee, they made my husband roar with laughter. His laugh makes me smile on the inside--mainly because it is just so darn cute . It just made my 1st BWC experience so much more enjoyable. Doing Improv can be hit or miss. You really have to have the right chemistry with your cast mates to really make it work. You also have to refrain from simply making yourself laugh instead of the audience. I am so happy to report that the cast of BWC are superb at working with each other and also at creating an atmosphere of laughter for the audience. They really click with one another which makes it easier for them to play off one another. I love the element of it being musical improv--keeps them on their toes and also gives the audience something to look forward to in the surprising lyrics. I also have to give a big BRAVO for not resorting to being lewd just to get the laughs--that is way to easy to do & they steered clear of that for the most part & it is greatly appreciated. It was an extremely enjoyable evening and I am looking forward to going back. read more

That was some funny stuff they did up there. I'm always impressed by improv because of the right brain power required. I've never done any acting but as a teacher I do improv daily. One day, I want to teach an entire day as an improv musical and see how the kids react. Will they sing along and get up and dance the way those kids in Grease did? High School Musical? Baby Wants Candy has inspired me. I admit that before going I tried to think of a title to yell out but never came up with anything I thought shout worthy. The guy next to me had his Rockettes Christmas title win the choice. I know he was happy, so were the rest of us. I laughed out loud several times. Lots of times. there was some time near the end that dragged a little bit, like the cast was sort of lost. Also, the tall guy, Ross Bryant, seemed to be laughing through many of his lines. He twitched too. I couldn't figure out if it was part of his whole, "I'm old" character, but then he referred to himself as being 65 and that's really not old enough to be twitching and have a shaky voice. I loved the show, though, I had a great time and recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh. read more

We were lucky enough to see Baby Wants Candy at a private event and had a wonderful time. They started with a classic improv skit based on an audience member's day (non-musical) and then proceeded to do an entire improv musical based on a suggestion from the audience, which in this case was something like, "I'm stuck in downward dog." As to not lose half the crowd with the yoga theme, they intertwined football and a love story into the musical. Overall, the performance was entertaining. The cast was quick-witted and clever; they clearly demonstrated that they are well educated as well (in a good way). read more

Nothing gets you out of a Monday funk like a good laugh. Not just a chuckle, but a deep from the stomach and if-you-had-a-drink-you'd-spit-it-out laugh! This is the reaction I had last night during Baby Wants Candy. I woke up in a great mood this morning and I believe that I owe it all to them! I was a bit confused as to what the show might be. It's a musical all improv'd. Amazing feat to say the least. So of course, everyone throws out ideas. Although I liked the "Asses Filled with Cranberries" suggestion, "The Rockettes Break Their Legs" was louder apparently. And off the people went! With a live band provided us with a whole hour of a completely improv'd musical! Improv always amazes me and I which I could be that witty. But this was a step above that. The people playing all the characters really knew how to read each other and seemingly have fun. The band was laughing along with us, which I'm sure is a great gig for them...they get to play *and* be entertained at the same time! I'm recommending this show to everyone around work today because I think everyone needs to see it! I can't wait to go back since obviously every show will be completely different from the rest! And now it's Tuesday, my day is looking up, I'm smiling and in the holiday spirit! read more

If you're in need of a good laugh, and I mean a full-out belly shaker, go see this!! The show is not just improv, one of my favorite theatrical forms, but musical improv. Improv is difficult enough on its own, and the addition of spontaneous musical numbers is impressive. I've gone twice now, and even though the first time was with a bunch of Yelpers, I really enjoyed the second. Why? The humor was a little more raunchy and far from family-friendly. In the second show I saw, "What's Mama Gonna Do?", the players carried out, without overdoing it, a sight gag involving the unseen character of an baby. Who knew swinging a baby by one leg could induce such laughter? I nearly wet myself. Each show is different, so if you don't like the one you saw, which I find hard to imagine, go see another. Just grab your Depends and go go go!! read more

By far the funniest improv show I've ever seen. The audience size is really small (about 5 rows), so you're right there in the action. The audience chooses a Musical title, and the cast does a 60 minute improv musical on that title! I truly believe that this cast is filled with some of the funniest people I have ever seen. The timing, the wit, and the improvised musical scores, makes them an incredible show, that is different every time you watch! I definitely recommend going, and I'll definitely be back for another show! read more

I went at the last minute as a plus one of the very kind and generous MaryAnne M and I am so glad I did! I owe her bigtime for the still-hurts-today-from-laughing! I am a huge fan of the performing arts in all of its mediums, but more than anything, I love a good laugh. A huge fan of stand up and a former Marketing Manager for alternative theatre (think Annoyance-esque and Charles Bush's cult classic Vampire Lesbians of Sodom) I have a soft spot in my heart for anyone that has the courage (okay-balls) to get up on a stage, any stage and do anything. Because I sure as hell can't. Or won't. But when you factor in Improv, well, they had me at hello. Think on the fly, be funny, witty, smart and throw in jazz hands. You try that at home and see what happens! BWC was on top of their game last night and although you'll never see the same show twice, I would wager that they only get funnier the longer they perform as an ensemble together. Although I didn't pay for the tickets, I would gladly pay them to amuse me again. This kind of entertainment is worth a lot more than the $10-$15 ticket price that's for sure. What I really loved about the show is that they cast clearly had a feel for each other and just went with it. Sans vulgarity or spit takes or the usual go to's. The held the audience's attention and went from the ridiculous to the sublime and back again several times. I barely noticed them holding back their laughter because I was busy making sure I didn't pee my pants. Yeah, they were that funny! read more

I enjoyed the yelp ComedySportz event and Andrea R. urged me to check out BWC as well. Oh boy I'm glad I did. I'm still more of a fan of stand up, but really, this has to be the best and most skillful improv I have witnessed. One thing I particularly liked about this team was they worked well together, and each member wasn't attention hungry. Or they weren't crashing and burning and needed a teammate to save them all the time. I think they did an excellent job building characters and forming a congruent storyline. read more

My review for Baby Wants Candy is long overdue. Thanks to the great Andrea W, I was able to enjoy the show with 9 wonderful people - FOR FREE, with a complimentary drink!!! I was at the 11/16 show - Trophy Husband. Yes, that was me, laughing hysterically loud. I think my friends wanted to run to the other side of the theater from me...embarrassed to be seen with me. The dancing and singing is amazing! We all had a great time! The bartender makes strong drinks - so tip well! Also, it is general admission, so be sure to go in as soon as the doors open, even though I would say there really isn't a bad seat in the house. We didn't know this, and we were the last ones to walk in, as we were enjoying our complimentary drinks. And they allow drinks inside the theater!!! It was definitely a hoot, and everyone should check it out at least once!!! Don't forget to fill out the little slips that are tucked in the programs for your chance to win a party for 10!! read more

There isn't much else to say that the other Yelpers who attended last night haven't already said, so rather than recycle what has already been said, know this: it was an hour of good laughs, and I'm glad I went. The troupe did a great job of being funny, tying everything together, and even laughing at themselves every once in a while. Fun times, indeed. read more

Dang, sign me up. How does one get to be a part of such a funny group? I'm sure it's not easy. But they made it seem, so flawless. Audience members yelled out possible themes for the nite's performance, and the cast went w/ "Desperate Housewives". The story went as far as random children being hidden in the basement of a rich Housewives home, dirty, un-kept and unfed, only to be used as servants. It was also a musical, so a lot of the act was in song. The cast was on top of their game! If you love stand-up, comedy shows, and improv- you'll find a good fix here. read more

Finally got here this past Friday night. I want to get back at some point (might be tough since we are moving back east) to see another show. The play title sucked and yet the actors were able to get things going and keep them going. It was incredibly fun and the space is great. No trouble hearing anything and the best part was that everyone looked like they were having a blast - from the audience to the actors to the musicians. I wonder if it would make more sense to draw from a hat or have the audience vote on two titles. I get that they have to go with the first one they hear to be clear that it's truly a random experience but when someone gives you "Donald Duck Goes To Rehab... I Don't Know?" you should get another shot. The actors were really good, all of them. I especially loved the woman playing the captain - she was the greatest drunk EVER. Also the guy playing Donald Duck/one of the Queen's assistants... although I get the sense that he "freestyles" at every show and that might be getting old. I got the sense from the reviews it happens a lot and the fact that it's incorporated into each show makes it come across as less improv than improv. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who lives in or is visiting Chicago. There is a bar in the lobby so grab a drink before the show, it's only an hour so savor your drink - you don't want to have to leave to get another. You don't want to miss any pat of the show. Oh, and spare yourself some embarassment - there is a sign by the stairs in the lobby by the bar that read, "Upstairs lobby." Don't go up there. The doors downstairs open when it's time to get your tickets ripped and enter. We interrupted the band/actors. read more

Tonight I had the joy of coming home to 4 free tickets to the Apollo. My roommate happened to score them from his job and wasn't up for going. So I called a couple of friends and we set out to see Baby Wants Candy. It's rare that I wish I had paid for a show, but they were SO good I really regretted not supporting them financially. Baby Wants Candy is a full band musical improvised group. Yes that's exactly what I said. In typical improvised fashion the group takes a cue from the audience on a topic, in tonight's case the cue was "What's Mamma Gonna Do now?" From this they build the cue into a story line in typical musical format complete with songs and music. Now doing improv is hard enough, but making up songs, music and for lack of a better word, choreography at the same time is pretty impressive. I obviously won't get into the details of the show because it was improvised but I must say the cast was absolutely hilarious. Some performers were stronger than others, but unlike run-of-the-mill improv you were never bored or annoyed with any of the group's members. Each one brought their own bit of style and humor to the piece. The technical intricacies of improv performing are lost to me, but another thing that stuck out about this group is their ability to improv yet still tell a compelling story. Most improv I see there are themes that carry loosely over from one skit to the next, but in general there is no "story" to speak of. After watching BWC I clearly see that either that's bad improv or BWC is just much better than most. The group kept to themes in the story with characters that had actual motivations. (Or at least as much as you can have in improv comedy) The southern girl who wanted to get out of her small town of Mark's Corner and see "the real world". The grifters looking to scam some money off of the lonely widow who just buried her husband naked....because that's how he'd want to go. The band plays an interesting role in the way they introduce or cue music. That sounds simple enough but they add a new element to the show with their use of tempo and mood for different musical numbers. When the funeral director is talking about a dark experience where he "had relations with a corpse", the whole piece is turned on its head when the band plays a happy love melody! Now the actors are reacting to that melody trying to change the mood of the scene they may had originally mapped out in their heads. It leads to some pretty comedic stuff. This was hands down the best improv group I've seen, not that I'm an improv expert or anything. But if nothing else Baby Wants Candy has shown me the difference between bad improv and good improv. Sometimes it's not just about laughs. Sometimes it's the little things that make a show shine. read more

Wow-Phenomenal! Easily the best improv comedy...maybe even the best live comedy I've ever seen. And I am not one to throw kind words nilly-willy for comedy. I have been witness, many times unwilling, to a lot of lame, lame, lame shows. I have even seen a few boners at the fabled Second City, where I thought "Isn't this supposed to be the fabled Second City?" I read the Yelp reviews for Baby Wants Candy awhile ago, and thought I should make the trip. All I can say is "thank you Yelp!" for introducing me to Baby Wants Candy. I have now seen Baby Wants Candy twice at the Apollo Theater, once at their Friday show, which is later at night, and Monday night, which is earlier at 8, and have not been disappointed either time. I also must agree with all the great reviews they've been getting here. The band comes out on stage, the lights go down, they come up again and they ask the audience for the title of the show that night. Have a title of the musical you want to see ready- as soon as they ask for one, the crowd usually screams out a ton. One cool thing they do after the main show (I guess it's kind of an encore) is that they call someone from the audience to answer some questions about themselves, and then Baby Wants Candy makes up a musical about that person. Last night it was about some girl who wanted to be a mime, and the musical about her was hi-larious. The bar is cozy in the lobby, and comedy does always seem funnier when you're smashed, but you don't need to be drunk to love this show. I wish I could say the same about my romantic life, when I often need to get drunk to enjoy it! read more

I had no idea what to expect when my friend suggested we check this out. I am not usually a fan of musicals, but at $7.50 a ticket when ordered through Hot Tix, I figured it was worth the risk. It ended up being the funniest show I have seen in a LONG while. We were rolling with laughter practically the entire time. Best part is they give tickets away at the end and I won FOUR, so I will be back next weekend! Absolutely recommended! Edit: we returned with our free tickets that we won and the second show was even more hilarious. I was amazed to see no repeated bits from the last performance. These people are fucking on point with their improvisations. Imagine all that could go wrong with a musical the crowd generated called Who You Gonna Call: A Dr. Suessical. It was also interesting to see an all new cast, save for two members. I was so happy to see the show looked to be sold out this time. This troupe deserves it. read more

This is the best improv in Chicago, and by far, the cheapest I've seen!!! (Plus I have a friend in the box office, which never hurts!! ) But really, their improv musicals are awesomely hilarious. Although, I wish they hadn't stopped doing the mini-musicals at the end based on an audience member's day. Those were THE BEST!!! Sometimes even better than the big musical because people can be fricking weird, and they totally exploited that! I miss those :( My absolute favorite guy in the "troop" is that nerdy looking white kid in the glasses who can rap better than Kanye! I loooove it. The cast does rotate though, so you'll see a few different faces every week. I can't even tell you how many times I've been to BWC, but it's 5 stars everytime and the theater is wayyyyyyy more comfortable than a place like Second City, where it's 20 bucks a head and they cram you in there like sardines in a can. One last thought, the bar here is reasonably cheap. Good news for people like me who like to laugh while drinking. read more

This show was lots of fun. They do an hour-long musical of a suggestion by the audience. Ours was "Pythagorus v. Euclid"...I was really impressed how they made up songs so quickly, and w/ choreography too. And they even remembered the math equations. My only complaint would be that it went on a little too long, but it was still pretty funny. Then I volunteered to go up on stage and they asked me questions about my life, and then they acted it out. it was pretty accurate...scarily accurate...haha. read more

Good times. I'm glad I looked into the events section listed on Yelp the other day I was able to catch this free outing. I really dig improv and if I find it with music it's a plus! These actors did a great job of keeping us thoroughly entertained. I walked in a few minutes late, which is horrible for improvs since actors will usually ask the audience for ideas. Didn't take long to understand how the show was developing and even if you didn't get it, it was filled with enough music and comedy to keep you laughing out loud. Was that KD Lang in the show? This actor looked just like KD Lang. A few of the actors were a lot funnier and quicker on their toes with solid comedic lines and song lyrics, than others. However, they all played well together it was a solid, good show. I love it when there is singing and the chorus is like a barbershop trio. I'm not versed in musicals, so excuse my example if it's incorrectly used. I would recommend this show to others. I've seen some sucky improv in Chicago, this is not sucky, it's pretty awesome. Not too expensive for tickets and if your wise to the internet you can score cheaper tickets. $5-15 is not bad at all. Some shows with talent like this can range over $20 dollars. For the latter portion of the show they grabbed a random person from the audience and asked her questions about her life which they improv'ed to life. Which was hilarious. Seriously, is Sarah a Yelper or was she a plant. To me it looked like KD was thinking, "man.. I wanted a regular person not a theater student." You can spot these theater peeps, when someone asks for a participant their hands fly into the air like they're at an audition (Reminds me of Molly Shannon in Superstar) . Like they're on sugared crack flakes, Sarah was lively and fidgety. Like she downed 5 bottles of Amped and she was roaring to fly, mime, whatever. Her hand shot up quick, no time for anyone else to get the courage to stand. Kudos to her for the effort. Be prepared for this, make up something funny or at least take some time to think. "Name a few things about your boyfriend that makes him unique?" Please, there should be more to a boyfriend then only playing the trumpet. read more

I loves me some improv comedy so I was definitely psyched to try out this new musical genre. The musical geniuses on the stage were fantastic. 3 out of the 7+ comedians were memorable in a positive or at least decent way and 1 was memorable... in the grimiest most degrading way possible. Maybe it was just a tough night or maybe this guy is just sick and twisted, whatever the case, his jokes weren't even witty, they were just crude and horribly inappropriate. He would be the kind of comedian Michael Jackson would have had at his little Never Never Land theme park. Absolute failure! The young college crowd was too busy going with the flow to stop laughing when things got out of hand. I'll probably never go back. read more

Got my first free tickets from Yelp...thank you thank you thank you! We loved it! I've gone back so many times, and always bring out of town guests here. Twice in less than a month? Yes. The second trip proved to be just as entertaining as the first. My 16 year old niece was in from out of town and this was a great (and age appropriate) show for her. The ensemble is really talented and just so darn funny. I really can't imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy this. Except, perhaps if you have a super stodgy person in your life who can't appreciate silliness every now and again. Bonus, I won three free tickets during the drawing at the end of the show, so a third trip to BWC is in my future. read more

Chicago is definitely the improv capitol of the world. With this title comes a certain amount of expectation. Let's face it, if you've gone to an improv show, you've seen your fair share of crap. Baby Wants Candy is a show that far more often hits than misses. The musical improv show that I've seen a few times over the course of many years is like any other improv show in that some actors are more talented than others, and some bits are amazing and others fall flat. What's great about this show though is that as hard as it may be to do improv, it's prob. harder to sing it. The BWC groups are always bringing their best to the show and give it the utmost energy, which goes along way in these situations. Your life may not change by going to one of these shows, but if you want to have a good night of fun and laughs, you could do a lot worse. read more

Improv at it's finest. The family and I had an enjoyable evening after first attending the Fringe Festival and then heading over to the Apollo Theater for Baby Wants Candy. I am not a huge musical fan but this musical improv comedy was excellent. It is definitely worth a look see. I recommend you head out to the Apollo and see Baby Wants Candy. read more

I usually hate improv, but BWC was an awesome funny time. I enjoyed the show very much and would recommend it to everyone. The tall guy with the curly hair, I believe he went by Bruce the night we attended, is a true comic genius. Be prepared to shell out $12 for your pre-show cocktail at the Apollo. Or, hit up one of the nearby bars before-hand...you'll want a little liquid spirit at this show. read more

OMG! Saw the show last Friday, 4/1/11. Holy crap! The best improv I have ever seen (and I have seen a LOT of improv). How could so much talent be crammed into so few individuals? All the music is improv-ed (the guitar player is awesome), all the acting, lyrics, melodies, harmonies, and choreography. Every piece of a musical invented right in front of my eyes based on a suggestion from the audience! This night the suggested title was "Nick Cable" which then turned into an epic tale of a demi-god named Nick Cable who lived in the basic cable system and threatened the survival of the world. The show was Friday and now it's Sunday and many of the scenes are still indelibly etched on my mind and making me laugh even today. .....wow..... Jim read more

The great BWC is also at the Annoyance Theatre for the summer (2014). Yay, I get to have laugher and awe at the mastery, creativity, fun, and playfulness during the week and closer to home. Thanks, BWC and Annoyance Theatre! I was able to hear the dialogue and song lyrics as well as I hear them at the more expensive-looking Apollo, which is quite well, which is important. Staff at AT were friendly and efficient. I'm definitely going back there to experience more! read more

BWC was one of the best improve shows Ive see in a while. Ive found Second City to be hit or miss lately, but that hasn't been the case with BWC. The Improvised Rock Opera I saw recently was hilarious. The cast was definitely ON. And the band was awesome as well. Im going again sometime soon and if you think laughing is fun then you should go too. read more

This was one of the first comedy shows I saw in Chicago and to date it is still the best. I love Baby Wants Candy and I really like their new space at the Apollo. It's a little smaller than their old location at iO, but they're making good use of the space. They fit a 3-piece band and usually 6 or 7 improvisers on the stage and the audience is practically part of the action. In a good way. Plus, there's a bartender there, too, and drinks are pretty reasonably priced. read more
