Luckily the Oxfam bookshop has a small English book section, and I regularly have a look see for any new additions. The books on offer are usually in good condition, a couple of times I've found a bit of a scribbler has been at them though. Naturally the German selection is much wider and they're a reasonable price (the ones I buy usually end up back in the shop after I've struggled through them). The staff are usually friendly and helpful and a couple of them speak English, which was useful when the only German I knew was Zwei Bier, bitte. If you want to buy a book or donate a book it's well worth a visit.

Head down the stairs and go straight on. If you hit the wall, you've gone too far. You'll only find the latest best sellers, or some of the classics, along with a few children's books, but if you, like me, enjoy leafing through a book, rather than buying online, then it's a nice place to go. That said, they often move things around, and that's annoying. They have a good ordering service, and do gift vouchers. They aren't like gift vouchers in the UK, you can only use them in this shop.

The staff was also very polite and we were able to find some really interesting titles. As you would guess most of the titles are in German, but I was able to find many English versions as well. It's free to enter and I believe this is a must visit while in Heidelberg, especially for any reading fans.

I was able to find German-language books on any subject, and there is a pretty good English-language section there, too. A nice selection of history, gardening, cooking, fiction, dictionaries like Langenscheidt, what must be the largest selection of Teubner cookbooks on earth, Dr Oetker cookbooks, and more. The employees were helpful and friendly and helped me hunt for a book title I wanted. The employees were kind of funny, actually. I was trying to speak German to them, but they gave me a blank look and immediately started speaking perfect English back to me. I must have been murdering their language and didn't know it, or have a horrble American accent, or both. Oh well. Spending some time in this place is a nice way to enjoy the evening, pouring over books, dreaming of things you'd like to do or places to see, learning about the larger world around you. You could spend hours here browsing through the well curated and super organized selection of books on the subjects of fine art, cooking and culture . These kind of books are not cheap but you might come across a good deal because there are always a number of books being offered at a reduced price.
