One of the worst things about being in Germany is that I'm a couple of thousand miles away from my local library. Luckily the Oxfam bookshop has a small English book section, and I regularly have a look see for any new additions. The books on offer are usually in good condition, a couple of times I've found a bit of a scribbler has been at them though. Naturally the German selection is much wider and they're a reasonable price (the ones I buy usually end up back in the shop after I've struggled through them). The staff are usually friendly and helpful and a couple of them speak English, which was useful when the only German I knew was Zwei Bier, bitte. If you want to buy a book or donate a book it's well worth a visit. read more

History

Established in 1985.

1942 wurde in Großbritannien das OXford Committee for FAMine Relief (Oxforder Komitee zur Linderung der Hungersnot) von vier Engländern und einem Deutschen gegründet. Sie reagierten damit auf das Leid der Zivilbevölkerung im von Deutschland besetzten Griechenland. 1948 öffnete der erste Oxfam Shop in Oxford, um die Aufgaben der Organisation zu finanzieren. Dieser Shop existiert heute noch. 1985 brachte eine Gruppe engagierter Bürger/innen die britische Idee der Oxfam Shops nach Deutschland: Der erste Shop wurde in Bonn eröffnet, ein weiterer 1991 in Köln. 1995 wurden die gemeinnützige Entwicklungsorganisation Oxfam Deutschland e.V. und die gewerbliche Oxfam Deutschland Shops GmbH ins Leben gerufen. Unter dem Motto "Wir machen Überflüssiges flüssig" leisten die Oxfam Shops einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Finanzierung der Arbeit des Oxfam Deutschland e.V. 2015 erlangt die Oxfam Deutschland Shops GmbH den Status der Gemeinnützigkeit.

Well, it's an Oxfam Shop - so you know what to expect. The secondhand clothes are rather on the…read moreexpensive side, but only really well kept pieces end in the shop. Tops and bottoms are sorted according to colour which is helpful. There are more clothes in larger sizes than in your average secondhand shops. It's always well worth to check out the glasses and bric-a-brac section for an unusual piece. The window display is changed bi- weekly - the currently displayed items are not for regular sale but can be bought at a kind of auction every Wednesday (I've never made it there on a Wednesday, so I can't really describe the procedure). In addition there are products like tea and coffee from fair trade to be had, as well as information on Oxfam projects. Most of the staff are voluntary workers and the proceeds go to development aid projects of Oxfam.
