Azalea Glen RV Park, Trinidad, CA - August 25, 2023
    Bruce O.

Azalea Glen RV Park, Trinidad, CA - August 25-28, 2023 We arrived at the RV park at about 12:30 pm, a little before the 1 pm check in time. The lady at the checkin counter was very friendly and there were no qualms about us being a little early. This isn't always the case at some RV parks. Some parks refuse to let you enter before 2 pm, even when the prior guest checkout time is 11 am. Check out time here is noon. We got checked in and received a friendly gift bag of chocolates and candy - dessert after lunch! This area has a long history, dating back to the original Yurok Native Americans who established the village of Tsurai on the bluffs overlooking Trinidad Bay, prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers in 1775. Fast forward to 1870, when Trinidad was incorporated as a City of the State of California, and then on to the 1920s when the Redwood Highway was established, paving the way for adventurous travelers to make their way out of San Francisco beyond Eureka to Trinidad and to the far northern reaches of California's redwoods. Azalea Glen hasn't always been an RV park. Between those early 20s to the 50s, it was other things, including the Park Cafe and Trout Ponds. No cafe here now, and the trout ponds have become lilly ponds, but the charm here may be more magnificent than ever. The park is very well maintained and manicured. There are about 35 RV sites. Six sites have wooden deck patios that overlook the Lilly pond. Full hookups. No tents. Laundry room - $2 per wash, $1.50 to dry - 45 minutes. Women and men's bathrooms each have a shower. Nice enclosed dog play area. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, how about a beautiful redwood forest with lush green foliage - redwoods, ferns, bay trees, lichens, and the like. Su-Meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point State Park) is literally across the street with campgrounds and miles of trails on a bluff overlooking and leading down to an expansive ocean beach. The park includes a nature center, gift shop, and ceremonial grounds of the region's original Yurok Native American inhabitants (still used today for religious purposes by their descendants) There are so many more attractions nearby - Big Lagoon a few miles north (kayaking and paddle boarding to your heart's content), and of course the area that started it all off before the Spaniards, Europeans, and Gold Rush settlers arrived, Trinidad Bay (remember the Yuroks). The modern City of Trinidad, about 5 miles south of the park, includes gift shops, a winery, a museum, a fish market, grocery store, and numerous eateries (our favorite in Trinidad is Seascape Restaurant near Trinidad Head Pier). Lots of other good options in nearby Arcata and Eureka as well - check Yelp!

This huge clematis is just outside check-in. That's my hand holding it!

WONDERFUL!!!! You just cannot find a more perfect place than Azalea Glen. The sights are very private with fences covered with blooming plants on both sides of you. Tall redwoods all around you and flowers everywhere. I've been to flower gardens that have fewer plants than here; and the hosts are just as beautiful as their spectacular campground. We'd always seen the "Don't feed the otters" sign and thought it was a joke. So when my husband took a walk around the end of the pond and the otter under the boat skittered out, it about scared the pants off him. What a delightful surprise! The best part of this campground is that it is SMALL, and we just love that aspect of it. Hope the county lets them open the restrooms soon. I miss the fresh flowers on the counter every day.

Site #2, private deck, fire pit, picnic table, Adirondack chairs

So glad we chanced upon this great little park. COVID-friendly policies including laundry access by appointment only. Our site was a flat, grassy area, fenced on both sides, with 2 Adirondack chairs, a picnic table, fire pit, and redwood deck. There is a sweet lily pad pond (not even one mosquito) and plenty of birds. Lots of peace and quiet, walking distance from the State Park across the street, which includes trails to the ocean, an Indian village, ceremonial sites, and lots of open space. Firewood for sale, quiet hours 9pm to 9am.

    View from our deck.

We came here for one night on our way north. Simple but just right. Had a south facing view of a large healthy pond from a deck with fire pit at the back of our sites owner is friendly and keeps a quiet well maintained park.

If you are lucky enough to get to Patrick's Point then this RV park is a must. It's the most charming RV park with beautiful wild gardens and a lily pond in the middle of the park. Some spots have decks overlooking it too. It's a tranquil, well maintained , lushly landscaped gem in the Redwoods. Spots are well thought out and private. Patrick's Point Park is a short walk.

This was a fantastic place to camp. Very pretty like most areas in Humboldt County. The spaces are a little bit thin but the big hedges really help make the spots private. It's a quaint little campground and has the long pull thrus that we needed with 50 amp service, water, and sewer. The really nice thing about this camp spot was that it was about a quarter mile from the entrance to Patrick's point State Park. Which is absolutely spectacular and has so much to explore. The one downside that we came across (which probably isn't a big deal for most people) was that it is pretty landlocked. It is surrounded by private property which meant that my two young boys couldn't go off and explore. That being said, the property itself is very well-kept and the grounds themselves are gorgeous. I would recommend a stay here for longer RV set ups but if you have a small enough rig check out Emerald Forest RV park down the road a bit. Check out my quick little video and some pictures to get a sense of what this very nice RV park is all about. Copy/Paste this into browser to see video review: https://youtu.be/MMDxaZAy_XQ

Came here to get away from the heat! This place was absolutely beautiful & CLEAN!! Even the restroom had fresh flowers. The grounds are filled with flowers. We had a space by the pond filled with Lily pads. Hopefully will come back again soon!!

We stay here every year for the past 10 years. Small older RV park but well maintained. The owners and staff are friendly and welcoming. I would not recommend this park if you have children, as it is a quiet park with not a lot for kids to do. Restrooms/showers and laundry are clean. Right across the road from Patrick's Point State Park. They only have 30 amp, but not an issue because you don't need to run your AC with their mild temperatures. There is a nice fenced area for pets which our fur babies love. There are beautiful flowering shrubs and perennials depending on the time of year you can find rhododendrons, hydrangeas, begonias, roses, etc. Our site back up to a wooden deck overlooking the beautiful pond. At night you can hear the frogs croaking. WE JUST LOVE THIS PLACE!

Wow, what a beautiful place. We pulled in at 6:30 on a Friday 4th of July weekend because we saw the sign that said " RV - yes". Imagine our surprise, we totally didn't expect to find such a lovely forest campground, got the last site. The pull throughs have plenty of room even for the biggest RV. There are darling sites on the pond for back-ins. There are permanent residents but they decorate their sites with flowers and privacy fences with lots of greenery so they are gorgeous. Some grassy mowed trails that lead you into the forest or across the street to Patrick's Pt. This is a very quiet park and they stress that so don't bother if you plan on using a radio or have noisy dogs and kids. We loved the peaceful space. Absolutely delighted

I thought for sure I did my review here, but I guess I didn't and I've got some good pictures too,…read moreso I will post those. I was here in June for a family reunion to see relatives, I had not seen in 50 years. It's even possible one of them had worked here as a maid in the 70s or 80s so that was really interesting. It was her old stomping ground. She lived here the rest of the family live nearby. This is a throwback to the 1970s which is why it's so charming and I think that's why so many people would love it. I didn't get to walk the grounds until the last day but there is actually an old-fashioned 70s style arcade with pinball machine machines it's just exactly like how it was when we were kids in the 70s and went camping with our parents. That's the type of stuff you would find. There's an old gathering hall in the back with wood floors that hasn't been used probably forever, which is gorgeous, there's a little Arboretum in the middle of the square that they light up every night with little violet lights. It's beautiful and you can tell that was an old area where there's a fountain that's no longer working. All charming and quaint. There's a little fire pit you can walk to in the back that looks like the type of fire pit we had at camp in 1975. It just has that old vibe that everyone loves and is disappearing everywhere so I pray they never change anything, but I don't think they will. The cabins are the same they're old-fashioned and beautiful however, inside they have been somewhat modernized because that's the world we live in people would be upset if things were original I wouldn't but a lot of people would. I found it to be gorgeous and quiet. The only complaint I had and they did give me back some money for that and I really do appreciate that is that my little mini fridge was rocking and making a lot of noise all night and that did keep me from sleeping, that was rough. I'm a light sleeper and I found the rooms to be cold because it's regulated heat and I didn't know I could go up and ask for a space heater or bring one so I didn't now I know. To answer the question would I come back again?? 100% I loved it there and of course the kitchenette was filled with everything you need, I didn't take a shower there which sounds bad because I was freezing, but the showers were clean. The bathrooms were nice. The room was small, but really good for the price. I do plan to come back next May and hopefully I'm on great terms with them. I think my little complaints or issues were reasonable and fair or they wouldn't have refunded but I'm glad that they did and I'm glad I brought it up so the next person doesn't go through those issues and I'm glad that I'm letting people know if you do get cold there. You can ask for a space heater or bring your own but just make sure you let them know. Let them know you brought it because space heaters are fire hazards and you don't want to cause trouble in a beautiful area like this Also, they did have an incredible campground which I left out so there was an area for RVs and then in the back there were actual pads where people had tents and camping gear and all I thought was wow I wish I could do that next time maybe my cousin will do that with me for a day or two and I can have the cabin as well oh, and I did forget to mention that some of the cabins had fireplaces which I think I will try to get next Time. This is the ONLY place to stay!! Also not far from the only gas station and the only market, which are both great!

Absolutely beautiful campground! We will definitely be back. Friendly staff, clean facilities,…read moregorgeous location

Most of the recreation I saw was kayaking and paddle boarding rather than swimming. You can also launch your own boat here.
