I have been through many bad haircuts to find the stylist i want after my long time hairdresser deserted me and moved south. finally I found her! Jesse did an awesome cut on my hair as well as partial foil in front. knew just the color i needed to tone down my home color-and the cut is perfect. i'm a tough customer when it comes to detail and getting it right. she did both. Christina is great as well she fit me in on short notice and made it happen. i had a trip day after I called and hoped for a spot. Thanks A Z my new salon. read more

This has been bothering me for a while so I figured I would write a review to make the owners aware of the environment they are (hopefully) inadvertently creating. I have come to this salon and enjoyed my experience before, it is a beautiful space and the stylists do wonderful work. Unfortunately, I was very put off by the way that my stylist presented herself at my last appointment. Quite frankly, she smelled of booze and the night before. I tried to ignore it but her colorful language and vulgar stories made me feel very uncomfortable for most of my appointment. I do not want to name names, I assume that if one staff member felt comfortable demonstrating this behavior then it is properly a widespread issue. Great salon but customer service needs to be fine tuned. read more

You book an appointment, show up to realize it was never actually scheduled. It happens I guess, no big deal. Then, they figure it out and a nice lady (Danine) volunteers to help out and fit me in which I really appreciated. She did a good job overall except I would have appreciated if I was informed that beards were out of her comfort zone beforehand. No big deal again but I actually felt bad for her since the lighting in the space was awful and she was still trying her best to work around it. The entire place seemed old, out-of-shape, and poorly managed. I do not plan on going here again but want to really clarify my problem is/was not with the stylist. read more

Ok I am the worst. I never plan my haircuts even though I owned a salon for a decade. So I randomly called and they'd had a cancellation with Kerrin. She is amazing. Today I called and got squeaked in with Russell. He is amazing!! The owner is completely lovely as well. If you don't go here, you should. They all rock! read more

Awesome experience! I don't trust too many people with my hair. AZ salon has delivered once again. Super skilled stylists. Lots of great hair products, huge open studio so you don't stuffy, very clean, extremely nice staff. Plenty of street parking and easy to get to. Can't ask for more from a salon. Highly recommend AZ Salon. read more

About two weeks before my wedding, the hair salon that I had booked six months prior, called me to let me know that a.) my makeup artist was going to be on vacation b.) I would have to pay additional to have another makeup artist come in and c.) that my 'girls simple up do would cost $150.00. No way was I going to go to an overpriced salon that expects their clients to pay for their mistakes . So, I was out of a stylist -- both makeup and hair -- what was I to do? Luckily my MoH suggested AZ studio. When I phoned, I spoke with the owner who was calm and courteous. By the grace of god, she told me some of her girls were available and could style us (at a much more reasonable price to boot). Two weeks before the wedding, I met with my new hair stylist Lotta and my new makeup artist Lauren at the salon. The salon itself had a modern, funky cool vibe and was as PJ M. described, upscale and unpretentious at the same time. The trials went more than well -- I was beyond pleased with the final result and left feeling confident that everything would work out. Day of the wedding, Lotta, Lauren and Lotta's partner in crime Kristin traveled to my home to work their magic. Work they did...there were nine of us. They were professional, calming and most important -- made me and my fellow 'gals look and feel absolutely radiant on my big day. I would without a doubt, recommend AZ Studio to all my South Shore friends, whether in need of an up do, a makeup artist or a hair cut. (During my trial I witnessed the most wonderful transformation -- a shoulder-length blonde exited the salon as a bright eyed 'bobbed brunette. Magic!) read more

This update is longer over due. I've been here two times since and they've definitely done a 360 on customer service. I ended up getting a credit for the bio ionic service, since it was discovered that perhaps it was the product that was the issue. I decided not to go forward with any other straightening services at this time as I didn't want my hair to fall out. So they put me with another stylist Carolyn. She was excellent. She listened to exactly what I wanted and I showed her pictures and she achieve the perfect look I had in my mind. I would like to thank the owner Christine for making sure that I was satisfied as well. I will definitely be back because of the quality of products used and customer service. read more

Upscale and Unpretentious at the same time! I was putting off my much needed haircut because I couldn't bare the thought of returning to the overly hyped South Boston hair salon I had been going to, and getting subpar cuts from it's owner. AZ Studio, the sister salon to Andrew Zona Studio in Hingham Center, is a refreshing change. I received personal service from Melissa, who has been with the salon for 10 years (that says something about the salon and it's owner). Melissa greeted me warmly, and we sat down for a chat about the cut I wanted before proceeding to the shampoo, which she provided herself even though she has an apprentice. She says that with new clients, if at all possible, she likes to be with them from start to finish. Nice, huh? Anyhoo, I am thoroughly satisfied and have booked another appointment with Melissa for a foil next week. Oh! The salon's store front boutique has a mess load of hip products such as Bumble and Bumble and Kiehl's, to name a few. It's worth a trip just for that! Haircut: $65 read more

Best customer service I have ever experienced like EVER. Christina the owner cares SO much for her customers. Even new customers. I haven't been a client very long, but every single experience I have had had with her has left my shocked by how kind and attentive she is. She remembers who I am whenever I call or visit. She even offers free deliveries, and I live a half hour away!!! Incredible. Thank you read more

Best place ever. I have been coming to AZ for years. In fact, I followed a stylist away for a while and then came back. Yes, it went through some growing pains a few years ago. Then it moved back downtown and found its true self -- a relaxed but upscale vibe with very talented staff, consistently excellent results, and an owner who cares about everyone like family. I'm usually a straightforward cut & blow-out every 6 weeks but my daughter experiments and has had only gorgeous highlights, ombres and balyages to go with her beautifully cut hair. And product deliveries during covid? Please! And thank you! read more

I had my wedding up-do done by Carolyn. I was first impressed by the friendliness of the salon and noticed that all of her brushes and combs were immaculate (just went to a salon where there were other peoples' hairs in the brushes still - ick!). Carolyn asked me what look I was going for, and I showed her some pictures. We worked together to find something I liked. During the process, she took notes and pictures on her phone. When the big day came, she knew exactly what we were doing, was on time, and did an incredible job! She is a perfectionist, and it shows. Everyone was commenting on how pretty my hair looked that day. She is fantastic! read more

Amazing salon, all the employees are very friendly and professional. Love my hair and will be returning soon!

I've been coming to this place for a while. It is a nice, clean atmosphere (like all places at derby st) which is a huge plus to me. They do a great job at eyebrows here. I've had almost all of the girls do my eyebrows here and have never been disapointed. Jessie probably does them the best. If you look at her eyebrows you can tell immediately she knows what she's doing... As for hair, I've had a variety of hairstylists here but Tiffany is by far my favorite. She is not only a huge sweetheart, but so talented! she actually listens to what you want, and does it! I am a natural blonde but died my hair brown for a period of time.. I thought I would never be able to get it back to my original color but she helped me get my hair back to my exact natural blonde... with high and low lights so it looked completely natural. She also spent an extra half hour teaching me how to curl my hair, which she totally didn't have to do. She was so nice and my hair looked so great afterward I think I will go back to her every time! The only problem is they don't take tip on credit cards so make sure you bring cash if you plan on tipping! read more

Went to this salon specifically to have my hair done by Margo. She is very talented , a true artist, and always consistent. Also great with advice on managing curly hair in different styles. I continue to receive tons of compliments on my hair cut, color, and highlights for over 15 years...and all due to her. She is a real gem, will never steer you wrong, and worth every cent! I normally would have given AZ a 5 star rating! Colleen is utterly fantastic at hair straightening and cutting. She is just the best. The problem lies with the spa services!!! I recently started having my lashes done there--not an inexpensive treat, especially when you need to go back every 2 weeks to have them filled. the person they had was fantastic!!!!!! I was addicted. I came back from vacation in August and Mary was gone!!!! No explanation--they just put me in with an inexperienced person new to doing eyelashes. If someone is putting glue near your eyes--they better know what they are doing and the new person does not!!!! I plan to take business elsewhere for the lashes. Waxing and other services are fine but people will bring children to the back area and it is just NOT a relaxing experience like it should be. read more

My usual hair dresser was not taking appointments this particular weekend (for a very good reason, but I still needed my hair trimmed) so I did some research and saw that not only is AZ open on Sunday's (bonus for someone who works 6 days a week), but they also accepted walk ins. I called at 10AM when the opened on Sunday morning and I got the last available appointment for a men's haircut. The associate I spoke with on the phone was friendly and informative. I arrived about 5 minutes prior to my appointment and was immediately asked by the associate at the counter if I needed any help. I told them that I had an appointment and was politely asked to sit down in the waiting area. After about 5 minutes or so Ms. Jones came out to bring me back to her station. After explaining to her what kind of haircut I normally get, she quickly understood and told me how she would go about cutting my hair. This may not be a huge deal to most but for someone who likes to be in the know, I was very impressed. After a couple of minutes of small talk we were in a full conversation. Once she finished my hair she asked how I normally style it. I told her that I was thinking of changing things up a little. She immediately gave me several options and told me exactly how to do it on my own. After the cut she walked me back up to the front counter to tell the associate at the register that I received a basic men's hair cut. The price was a little more expensive than I was normally used to paying but for $30 and the extra service she provided me with, I thought it was a fair price. Overall, the atmosphere was upscale and friendly, I walked out of there feeling great and will definitely be going back again. read more

Owner is snotty and needs a lesson in being genuine!!! Been going here for over 4 years, went through 3 hair dressers...Lindsay and Chris. Both were fantastic! Then when they went to their new location in downtown hingham, things seem to go downhill. For starters, Lindsay and Chris left. I cycled through various stylists and none could really match the color and cut I had with Chris. I always get the same thing when I got, partial foil with a trim. Costs always stayed the same. Again, been going here for over 4 years. 5 weeks ago, went for a partial and cut and was charged 2x as much!!! Wtf??? I asked for a pricing sheet and the owner snottily told me that they don't have one. Today, went in for another appointment. When I walked in, the owner saw me. She acknowledged me and kept talking with another person. 15 minutes later, I finally had to ask if my stylist was coming to get me. Owner finally got off her lazy ass to go get my stylist. Considering how long I've been coming here and how much they charge (Newbury prices!!!), you would think the owner would make more an attempt to treat her long standing clients with more consideration and class! And yes, consistency in pricing would also be good!!! No pricing sheet??? Feeling pretty ripped off! Go to her ex-husband's place, it's right around the corner. It's called Zona. At least you'll get the quality of customer service!!! read more

Went to Holly Shawwaf at AZ Studio for a color correction and she exceeded my expectations! I came in here a few weeks ago for just a simple men's haircut. When I walked in, I was impressed with the decor of the salon, and I was greeted by the receptionist who offered me a cup of coffee. I willingly obliged, thinking she was going to just show me where the coffee machine was so I could serve myself, which I prefer to do because I'm a simple, do-it-yourself kind of guy. Well, she went over to the Keurig machine and made it for me. Already, we're off to a bad start because I don't like anything that smacks of pretentiousness, and being in the Derby Street Shops - uh, excuse me - "Shoppes", A-Z Studio does it's very best to live up to that expectation. I had hardly drank any of my coffee when I was promptly taken by one of their stylists who exuded all the qualities you'd expect in a yuppie salon like A-Z: nice, professional, and just a tad stuck up. She began by giving me the third degree about how other stylists have cut my hair, and how many weeks I go between haircuts. I told her I go about three weeks between cuts, and she's looking closely at my hair as if she's trying to confirm my honesty in that statement. Maybe I go about four weeks. Who cares? It's only a haircut. Then I tell her how I typically have my hair cut: #2 buzzers on the sides, and the top cut with scissors. Real simple. She tells me she can do it that way if I want, but that she typically doesn't use clippers on the sides. Instead she uses scissors and cuts it by hand because it looks better. I figured, okay, she's the professional. She knows what she's doing, so I took her advice and had her cut my hair with scissors only. So she shampooed my hair and began cutting it. When she got to the top part, she cut it with some fancy schmancy styling shears that I had never seen before. These shears had slits that were perpendicular to the cutting edge of the blade. I guess they're designed to give your hair more "body". Whatever. All I wanted was a haircut. So she finishes cutting my hair and is about to put some styling paste into it - not gel, but paste - more fancy schmancy crap, and I told her that before she does that, I just wanted to brush out the loose hair clippings with my hands, which I normally do before I put any gel or, in this case, paste, into my hair. Quick as a flash, before I even got a chance to put hands to head, she whisks me away to the sink so she can spray the loose hairs out with the hand-held shower thingy. Enough of the red carpet treatment already! It's a lot simpler, faster, and easier for me to just briskly run my fingers through my hair for ten seconds. It's not a problem. Really. So after rinsing out my hair (again), and putting the styling paste in my hair, I walk up to the front counter to pay for my Newbury St.-style service and cut. What's the damage? $45. Are you kidding me? Are you freakin' kidding me??? I've never even paid half that for a good haircut anyplace else. And here's the kicker. With any haircut, it usually takes a few days to really see how good of a cut it is, to see what it looks like, etc. Honest to God, my head looked like it had a mushroom cap on the top of it. $45 to look like a character out of Super Mario Bros. Incredible. I really don't get why anybody would spend good money for something as simple as a haircut. I guess it's par for the course in a place Derby Street, the Newbury Street of the South Shore read more

The owner is the reason it was one and done for me. I had a cut and was already not happy that the stylist rushed it through in 20 mins (I had a scheduled appointment and arrived on time). The haircut was decent though and I would have returned except for the owners behavior. Since I was new, she insisted on pitching me her products and walking me through the products section. I told her I wasn't interested, thanks, but she literally grasped my elbow and pulled me that way. Hands off please! I already said no; very obnoxious behavior and owner needs to understand that the client is in control, you narcissist. read more

Like a box of chocolates... I never know what kind of service I'm going to get. I had a great stylist and hair cut a few months ago by a guy, who was awesome, and has since moved to another salon. I've been back twice trying to recapture the magic of a stylist that was helpful, had great suggestions, and seemed to really care about me looking good. I have regretted both attempts at doing so. I've been trying to grow my hair out, but also have it look good while doing so. Apparently this is impossible. Both of my most recent visits felt like total wastes of time and money. The last two stylists loomed at me dumbfounded as I tried to explain what I wanted and then neither really did much but give me a trim, throw some crap in my hair, and send me away unkempt, unhappy, and unstyled. They won't get a chance to mess it up again. While trying to figure out what to say about my experiences, I realized what the problem is. This is a salon for soccer moms, and maybe desk-jockey dads. I don't think anyone is left here that can do interesting/progressive/contemporary hair cuts or styling. read more

I recently went to this salon on a recommendation from one of my friends. I had a great experience booking my appointment with the knowledgeable staff. This place is the bomb! The atmosphere is cool and cozy, the staff is friendly, funny, and gorgeous, the price is right! How can you beat that? You can't! I have seen Grace off and on for the past 5 years and she is by far the best men's cut you can get. I even refer my male friends from Boston and north to Grace when they are looking for something better than the run of mill places. GUYS CARE TOO! Grace is funny, stylish, edgy, and a top notch stylist across the board. I have witnessed her expertise many times through the years, whether she is giving advice to another stylist on color or cut, or she is helping those of us who are less fashion forward recreate an awesome style she is hands down on top of her game! The bottom line is, when someone knows what they are doing, they own the show, Grace owns the show! Check it out you will NOT be disappointed! read more

I would give this salon 0 stars. I came in as you see I had a dark brown previously done at a salon in Boston due to this being close to my house I came here( all because of convenience ). I had a tiny of burgundy at the ends of my hair. I showed her the balayage i wanted the stylist said that would be great she just had to strip the hair first ( i have never had anyone strip my hair as i am high maintenance and get my hair done often, never has this happened) She decided to strip my entire head which was orange and told me she was doing the balayage in the sink as she stripped my hair. The stylist then proceeded to say this won't be the blonde you asked for it will be a brown balayage ( keep in mind she is a blonde specialist in hair supposedly) I became upset and told her fine the brown balyage isnt what i asked for but it is fine mind u this isnt a brown balayage my end result. My appointment was at 11:00 am i was finished by 4:30pm. To make a long story short my hair had BLUE in it PINK and orange. I went back to the salon i asked the owner to right her wrong since i wasted my entire day and i said look at my hair this isnt a balayage i would like a refund, she then tried to tell me i had my hair done by the box prior to coming in which is completely false and that the stylist t took 5 hours on my hair and worked very hard. I said yes 5 hours of my day at least she got paid i wasted my day, I paid and my hair isnt what i wanted it to be. She told me i could have a follow up appointment at a cost to me. I asked for a refund as it cost $305.00, she said no i told her i would write a review on yelp because i am dissatisfied, as i have photos and she then threatened me as you can see in the text i provided. I was an unsatisfied customer and i would not trust this salon and for the cost go somewhere else. I have experience at salons as i used to work at one. I know what proper protocol is. I received a text which is blatant intimidation tactic so they won't receive negative reviews. I got my hair fixed by the owner of a 2 salons in Boston he looked at my hair and said she didn't need to do this what did she do this isn't a balayage and i had to pay to have my hair fixed. I also had to cut my hair a couple inches because she stripped my entire head and killed the ends of my hair. The owner of the salon has terrible customer service as i tried to do the right thing and have her correct this issue. At this point, this is about not having other people go through this terrible experience and it was my birthday weekend and as i left the stylist said when she finished" do not freak out do not freak out". When you have your hair done it is supposed to make you feel happy and confident not sad and upset at how terrible it came out. Please trust this review; I wouldn't want anyone else to endure this terrible experience. read more

Customer service is not the strong suit for this place. I have been going here on and off for a few years and each time am more disappointed. They do not explain what their prices are and can be very petty. For example, I got a consultation to get my dark hair bleached but they would not give me a price so I went elsewhere. Unfortunately, the other place did a horrible job so I went back to AZ based on previous good experiences to see if they could fix it. Again, they would not quote me a price until I pressed them and then was told it would be $175 because the other place had used Aveda products. I'm not sure how products that were previously used and then rinsed out could affect the price but that's what I was told. Needless to say, I did not stay and for what it's worth: I went in on a Saturday but there weren't many other customers there. read more

I think all the girls here are amazing! Esp Christina Franklin, she could cut my hair with a blind fold on and one hand tied behind her back and my hair would still look amazing!!!! She is very good at what she does. especially with curly unruly hair, which i have. Ive also been in there when Grace has being doing extensions and she looks likes she does and amazing job, some day i might want to try that. ive also been in there during prom season.. and her updo's are little pieces of art.. i would highly reccommend The desk can be a little hairy at times, mostly because they are so busy. You have to leave your gratiuty in cash , which sometimes i forget, but no big deal they carry all the best products and their prices are cheaper than going into boston, read more

I ended up at AZ at the Derby Street Shoppes for two reasons. My hair stylist abruptly left her position at the salon where I had initially received the shorter cut. That salon set me up with an appointment with another stylist at the said unnamed salon, which turned out to be a disaster. I had never had such a bad cut, and needed someone to help me out quickly. I called AZ because I work in the Shoppes at Derby St, and figured it would be convenient, and also because I had never heard anything but positive feedback from anyone I have met who went there. Anyway, I called AZ and told them I had a short haircut from another salon that I couldn't deal with, and I asked AZ if they had anyone good with shorter hair. The person immediately suggested that Kris cut my hair, and they assured me she definitely knew what she was doing. They were so right! Kris not only cleaned up the mess my other salon created, she made it look better than ever! I have been going to Kris now for at least a year, and her cuts are awesome, she is awesome. She even got me started on professional coloring, as she mixes that so well, too! As I initially just saw Kris, I soon realized that AZ could provide me with the other necessities, and well too. Lorna is great at the eyebrow wax/shape, and I can't say enough about Colleen! She seems to do it all--she does my nails regularly, and ended up cutting my hair in a pinch. I love this salon! Great services, and awesome people there. They do it all, and very well. read more

I don't know why this place has received such high marks! The first time I had my hair done here, I did love both the cut and the foil. I made a return visit and, unfortunately, did not have the same good experience. While the cut was still fine, the stylist must have done something different with the foils because the "touch up" color on my roots was drastically white-er than the original highlights. I let time go by in hope that they would soften over time, but no such luck. Since I had now had one good and one bad experience, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. She fixed the abrasive highlights from the second visit, but the cut was actually horrific. I honestly think the stylist was just lazy. I wanted to cut about 4 inches off, and she told me that she wouldn't need to cut the layers in the front. In addition, the "trim" to my side bang resulted in straight cut bangs halfway up my forehead. My first visit lasted over two hours, but the last visit only lasted about 35 minutes. The cut was so unflattering, unstylish, and expensive. I cried for about 10 minutes, then called another salon and asked if they could please help. The new salon (located on the Cape) told me there is some triangle trick that hairdressers are supposed to use when cutting bangs, which had clearly not been done to my hair. In order to fix the disaster, the new hairdresser had to give me another layer, texture the hair, and angle the front. All the finishing touches that should have been done from the start. I will NEVER go to AZ Studio! If you're going to spend the money, I'd recommend you go to a really nice salon in the city. read more

I moved so I don't go here anymore, which is a total bummer. I have tried different stylists and all were AWESOME.
