Served Sunday Banquet - 3 courses plus popadoms, chutneys and drink: £9
Partaking in lunch: me (the vegetarian) and himself (the carnivore)
A contemporary restaurant with classy modern decor, Ayr India served us top notch food packed full of flavour and very much lived up to it's excellent reputation.
The Sunday Banquet menu looked like such amazing value it would have been pretty daft to order from the a la carte. I love the element of mystery when opting for a served banquet. You're never entirely sure what will come to the table - the waiter asks whether you prefer your food hot, medium or mild and then checks your dietary/meaty preferences before bringing a colourful array of dishes to the table. We figured the chances of enjoying our meal were pretty high, and we weren't wrong!
One stunning dish after another made its way to our table. Popadoms were up first accompanied by four different dips/chutneys: sweet honey mango, spiced onions, minted yoghurt and chili spiced. All very different. All delicious.
They were quickly followed by one of my favourite Indian appetisers; chana dhal on light-as-a-feather crisp poori. For starters, himself had chicken wings and chicken pakora, while I had a selection of vegetable pakora which included cauliflower just the right side of al dente, and clearly freshly cooked to order.
Rice, Indian bread and a couple of main course dishes each brought a knowing smile to our faces. We knew it would be a struggle to finish all this lovely looking food, but we were going to give it a jolly good try. Stuffed, happy, and barely able to move, we paid our very modest bill and went for a much needed walk. Don't think I'll be needing anything to eat for a few days.
The restaurant serves the Sunday Banquet from 12.30 til 4pm and though it was very quiet when we arrived, it was almost full when we left, so might be worth booking a table, says she who never books a table, and always takes a chance!
NB. They are pretty switched on about special dietary requirements and are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free friendly. Just be sure to mention when ordering. read more
