My friends' birthday was coming up and I thought taking a…read morefood tour to celebrate would be much more fun than just going out to an individual restaurant like we usually do. And it couldn't have been a better decision. We took the North Berkeley Tour and Justin was our guide (who I very highly recommend). Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable about the history of all the delicious food we enjoyed, but he was also so personable and easy to talk to. It really felt like we were getting an insider's view of the area. And of course, the selection of food we had was diverse and amazing too (all of it). The best advice I can give to someone who would like to book this tour is to bring your appetite because you will not be hungry when it's over. In fact, by the time we got to our last stop for cupcakes, we were all so full that we just took them to go. I'm still amazed that we were able to visit so many different places in such a short distance. Many of the foods I tried were new to me but I think it's safe to say I've now discovered some new favorites and will definitely be back. Oh, and for those who like to shop, we passed a few cute places along the way too. This really was a fun experience and a wonderful way to spend the day!

I don't think it was a dumpster fire but it's definitely overpriced for what it is, at least what ours was. I think some more knowledgeable tour guides make this really awesome, which is why the reviews are so positive. To start: our tour guide was down-to-earth but mainly apathetic and sarcastic, instead of passionate about food. We wanted to get excited about the food and mission district history, which is why we paid $80. The food itself is worth about $20-25, so the rest of the money is paying for tour quality, in my opinion. Here are the main things that I felt could be better- explanation about why we're going to specific places and ordering specific dishes, and more organization. Secret Food Tours does not seem to partner with the restaurants- our guide was surprised that one place was closed and promised us a dish that we did not actually have. I can tell from the other reviewers that we weren't cheated out of anything- we went to the same number of restaurants that others did- but it does seem like they just go to wherever is open, as there's no reasoning behind why. We went to a Mexican restaurant and got regular mission-style burritos. Then, we went to a Mexican bakery and got conchas- these are not Mission-specific, they're just Mexican (splitting a $1 concha was the kicker for me- why? What if I was alone or in a group of 5?). We went to a different Mexican bakery and got honradas, which you also have to split. It kept me from being full, but it seems badly organized. Next, we got these Filipino fusion tacos, and last, we went to the secret stop. I won't give it away, but it's wildly popular and we've already been there before. It's also not related to Mission District, or even Mexican, culture in any way. We got a very limited menu choice- tea, hot chocolate, or a chocolate milk that our guide said was not recommended. Well, after all is said and done, I cut my losses. I had a lovely day walking with my friends through SF eating food, but I really could've found these places on Yelp in seconds. Save $60 bucks so you can pay for parking!

We've been on dozens of tours, and have never been with a guide that had few words and so little information--I felt I could have easily gotten a lot more by simply reading Wikipedia for five minutes. We did sample five different places, of which three were good experiences. One of our stops was Fried Ravioli at Curry Up Now, a franchise Indian fusion restaurant. WTH?!?!? Maybe it's me but that isn't representative of the Mission District. I'm sure with some constructive feedback and planning for true good eats Mission District style, this could be a very enjoyable tour.
