I've had bad experiences with Avis. This wasn't the worst Avis, but obviously have had more negative experiences than positive ones. I've picked up from this location a few times, but this recent time, I will not be returning. Pros: -no line -easy to get to office Cons: -waited 15 min before someone showed up -your car here will almost always never have full gas -cars are always dirty -cars will have noticeable visual damage and/or glass damage -had engine issues on cars as well -QR code to get out of garage was a bit finnicky I've had worse options for sure, but this is definitely not the best place to grab a car. We rented a vehicle from this Avis San Diego location for 12 days. We returned the vehicle early January. At the counter, we clearly and explicitly declined all optional insurance coverage, informing the agent that we were fully covered through our Mastercard Gold credit card. However: - Optional insurance products were not clearly explained. - Individual pricing and total additional cost were not disclosed. - We were asked to sign electronically on a tablet without being clearly shown which options remained selected. - No copy of the signed rental agreement was provided at pick-up or return. We later discovered that multiple insurance products had been added and charged. Under basic consumer protection principles, valid consent requires clear disclosure, transparent pricing, and an explicit opt-in. None of these conditions were met. We only received a copy of the rental agreement more than one month after vehicle return, after repeated requests. The document provided does not clearly reconcile with the invoice, making it extremely difficult to understand the charges. After reviewing other public feedback, it appears that similar complaints have been reported at this same location. This experience raises serious concerns regarding transparency and informed consent in the sale of optional insurance products. My recent experience with Avis at the Town & Country location has left me utterly disappointed. Despite having a confirmed reservation for a 4:00 PM car pickup on Dec 13th, I arrived to find the office closed at the very same time they promised my vehicle would be ready. It's mind-boggling that they would offer a pickup time of 4:00 PM when their doors shut at that hour. The clear mismatch between the listed closing time and the promised pickup time resulted in considerable inconvenience and frustration on my part, as I had made plans based on their confirmation. While I understand that unexpected issues can arise, encountering such a stark discrepancy is disheartening. In light of this, I've requested a full refund for my reservation, seeking fair compensation for the inconvenience and time wasted waiting without access to the rental car I had reserved. In 2018 I totalled my car, me being me, I wasn't ready to replace my little red hot rod with some new model thing so renting it was. I returned to San Diego fall of 2018 and new of this location and it had the best rates near me. I rented consistently with Avis and it was always easy. The intermediate car was always reasonably priced, clean, and I was able to extend the rentals with no problem. The desk managers, older gentleman and his son, were friendly and helpful and gave me upgrades whenever available. I was extremely happy with the service and what I was paying for until February 2019. I started a new reservation on a Friday evening and made it for pickup the next day, Saturday. Got up and got to the Town & Country Hotel and to the Avis door in the lobby when I did there were several other people standing at the door and some angry voices. I had no idea what the commotion was about until I saw a handwritten sign on the door that said: CLOSED - NO MORE CARS. Like the other customers standing reading the sign I was extremely pissed off. How the heck do you have a reservation and show up to pickup a car and there are no cars? I called the Avis toll free number and they were no help and had no information. It was completely frustrating and annoying. Clearly all of us there to pickup a car needed one for whatever reason. That same day done with dealing with rentals (Avis was until then a good one. Hertz and Enterprise were terrible and my least fave in San Diego and any other city.) , I went to a dealer in Mission Valley and purchased a car. read more

We flew in to San Diego and picked up our AVIS rental, Jan 19. All went well and we returned the car on-time, Jan 22. About 5 miles before returning, I filled the tank for $23.50. I hadn't used much gas, but I made sure I filled it and pushed extra in several times so I knew it was a little over full. I tried to give the gal (who scanned the VIN and gave me a receipt) the AVIS paper that I was supposed to submit with the gas level marked, but she didn't want it. She wasn't interested in checking the gas level, just busy talking with one of her work friends. I fly back, get home, check my computer and see that they claim the vehicle went out at 11.2 gals. and was returned with only 5.4 gals. and charged me $57.94 on the e-statement! I've rented from them many, many times during my 50+ years of driving and doing business, but no more. I'm sure I will lose in my challenge of their error. Suggestion: Keep your gasoline receipt, but don't count on that. Insist that the attendant verifies that you tank is full and get a record of that. The worst! I rented a car from this location and was instructed by the rude manager that the car could be picked up in the garage in a clearly marked Avis Spot. He told me that I needed to walk around the car and send him any pictures of dents or marks. The car was not located in an Avis spot- they had none in this garage and I found it by clicking the key. The car had 2 large scratches on door and upon further inspection the car was filthy and had a old package of Chicken McNuggets in the glove compartment. Sent this info to Raul the manager and the pictures with scratches and his response was "got it". 2 days later I see a charge on my card from Avis and no one can tell me what is it because the receipt is not available. I was transferred 3X only to be back on hold for 25 minutes before I hung up. Do yourself a favor and go to enterprise instead. read more

My fiancé and I made an online reservation to pick up a Toyota Corolla from this location. All expenses and fees were paid. When we arrived to the location, Raul, the manager, was not welcoming nor talkative. After informing him about our online reservation, he steps outside without saying a word and when he returns, he says he only has a Nissan and Chevy available. My fiancé expresses his confusion as he reserved the Toyota online. Raul continues to rudely deflect from the question without providing any answers or insight. We decided to go with the Nissan, which has a dent on the drivers side, multiple scratches, and poorly vacuumed seats/floors. Raul only marked the dent on the slip however I took it upon myself to mark the minimal damages. Towards the end of finalizing the paperwork, Raul goes on to ask for my credit card. Considering that we paid our expenses online, we were confused and asked for clarification and Raul tickled by his impatience, rudely repeated that he needed my credit card. He never gave a properly explanation as to why however he did mention my card was not get charged. Meanwhile in the span of all this, an older white woman comes in and Raul demeanor is completely different. His customer service skills were revived as he laughed and joked with this woman. I do not want to assume anything however considering my fiancé and I are both black, this type of negligent behavior is not uncommon nor acceptable. If Raul is the manager of this location, I can only imagine what kind of service and treatment his supervisor condones. DO NOT COME TO THIS LOCATION. 2 days later, I see that my card has been charged after Raul clearly stated it would not. Getting in contact with this location and even the customer service department has been a nightmare due to automated massages and ridiculous wait times. Helpful, honest Before I got a car, he let me know that my rental car missed a part (hub cap) and gave me a note that told about damage or missing car part. He told me to keep that note and may show it when return car (return at another location) Some rental car locations don't tell anything to customers. Any missing is our pay. This place is care for their customers. He answered me many questions. This location didn't trick customer like some place that charged any service that I don't want. Final price was same as quote price. CON : This location is hard to find. It is inside of hotel building. Rented a car from this location and overall very satisfied. Google maps directs you to back entrance but, once you know to ignore that and just drive directly to the front, it is a very convenient location. The car was lovely and better than I had prepaid for. The office is tricky to find if you don't drive up to the front entrance (small sign on right of Main entrance if FACING main entrance from outside). East side of main doors. When returning the process was quick. The employee didn't appreciate my challenges in finding the office but wasn't harsh about it. Returning the car was fast, friendly and helpful (same employee). Poorest customer service . The older man has to be the rudest man in the country. My son and I came to pick up our minivan which was reserved two months earlier. We encountered a very hostile older man. We asked if minivan was ready. He threw three keys on the counter and said go check it out. That's all we got . I asked him how can it be if l reserved it. That's when he went off, he started shouting at me. I couldn't believe it! I thought I must be on a show cause there was no way Avis would allow their employees to treat customers this way. This is the second worst experience I have had with a rental car. The worst was last year when I rented a car from budget/avis (the car broke down on christmas eve, kind of a nightmare). This time when I was on line scheduling a couple of extra days I noticed erroneous charges. I spent 4 hours that I will never get back on the phone with FOUR different people who were not helpful, apparently I was being charged for insurance (which I had declined) and was told to drive to the nearest budget office. I was told at the San Marcos office that I need to go all the way back to the airport to have the charges adjusted. Dave at the avis office (manager? of both offices?) fixed the erroneous charges which included pre paying gas (which I had also declined) but offered nothing in compensation for my time, trouble, gas, etc...WORST CAR RENTAL COMPANY EVER. I am a bartender and I will tell this to anyone who will listen. I heard there is a new car rental service TURO, and I will use them any time I need a car from now on. It's impossible to find this location. The office is located on the backside of the Town and Country Hotel's main lobby. There is NO signage from the main road (Fashion Valley Road), and the Google Map information is outdated, it was impossible to find this office. We ended up on the wrong end of the resort compound, and I had to walk from one end to the other (past the swimming pool). To find the office CLOSED. It was Memorial Day, and the website said the office would be closing early, so I made the pick up an hour before closing time. Arrived at 11am and the office was locked with lights off. I called the customer service line and was redirected into a black hole. There was another customer there with me at the same time trying to return their vehicle. I decided to call up the Gaslamp location and they literally saved my behind. This place is a piece of garbage and whoever is managing it needs to have their employment re-evaluated. read more

Book here for cheaper rates on rental cars compared to other companies. The airport has a higher tax rate. They gave me a free upgrade to a higher level car. The location is part of a smaller resort next to a convention center. I also called direct vs. doing on-line and found that Avis prices were cheaper across the board than what I was seeing on line. The staff is super accommodating since they're part of the hotel and know customer service! Note: This location is inside the Town and Country Resort/Hotel at 500 Hotel Circle 92108 - in it's own small building that has the logo on the outside. Once inside you should just park off to the side and don't go into the secured gate as they'll charge you to exit. You have free entry/exit once you have your Avis Car. read more

You would think that during a pandemic, cleanliness would be at the forefront of any company, but I was shocked and disgusted by state of my rental. At first I just noticed some trash in the middle console and in the driver side door, so I left with the vehicle. Later I realized the front passenger floor was also dirty and there was grease marks on the seat and fingerprints on the passenger window. A couple days later I put something in the back seat and was horrified to find vomit on the rear carpets. At this point, I only had the car for another two days and was hundreds of miles from the location so I didn't return the car early. In addition, a leaking tire on the rear passenger side resulted in the error warning and required me to refill three times during my week with the vehicle. When I brought all of this information to the attention of the employee upon my returning the vehicle, he didn't apologize and instead I suggested I call the customer service number. I did reach out to them and emailed photos of the car's condition, and they thanked me for my feedback but did not offer anything to ensure I remain a customer. I highly suggest you look elsewhere when renting a vehicle in San Diego. read more

Reviews are so hard to go by. I made a reservation and went to yelp and I was suddenly so nervous when I wasn't beforehand. I went to the town and country the Avis is in a small room conveniently at the front. The guy who checked me in was nice. (I usually get names but was so busy today I just didn't) We had a nice conversation so idk why people act like he's so rude. He does his and is efficient and seems like a nice guy. I was in and out in 10 mins. He walked me all the way to the car. And the car is nice too. This is the trouble with going to the internet and basing everything on reviews. There's always back story and always 2 sides. I'm glad I didn't end up changing anything and didn't go by what the reviews said. I went to el centro California and when I was coming back I had to stop at a check point and the dogs immediately ran to the car .. after I was sent to inspection the dogs found drugs in the car .. we almost got arrested I had to explain it was a rental .. and we were let go.. when I got to the rental place to return the car I explained the horrible experience I had and Raul didn't care all he said is call corporate .. I rented a car over the phone a week prior to going out and thought, "my, what great rates they have." However, when I got there he told me that my rate would now be higher and if I wanted to drop the car off at the airport, instead of back at the hotel, the rate would go up $60 A DAY! Ugh. I told the owner, Raul, that I wanted the rate that was quoted to me on the phone and he grudgingly agreed to do that, however, he managed to sneak in a comment about me being a liar before handing over the car. Now I am no genius, but is this anyway to treat your customers and offer service? I think not/ The car looked like it hadn't been vacuumed since 1999 and had a layer of dust no white glove would ever touch. I booked a rental car from Avis over Orbitz. I also went with the insurance they provide for the rental car. (I know how hairy traffic can be in San Diego). Shortly before my trip, I found out my daughter (who I was visiting in San Diego) had contracted COVID so I had to cancel the trip, and I cancelled the rental car. Imagine my surprise to find the $50.00 charge on my credit card for the car insurance coverage. I disputed the charge r(on my charge card) and after a couple of months, Avis (or Orbitz) came back claiming I signed the agreement and the credit card company found in their favor. In other words, I was charged for a product I never received, and never used, because I failed to cancel the insurance along with the car (which I did cancel). I've been scammed. Be aware folks! Never again will I book anything with Orbitz or with Avis. You lost a lot more than 50 dollars on that deal, you idiots. read more

The test of a worthy business is not how they treat you when things go well, it's how you are treated when things don't! We picked up our vehicle close to closing one evening, for a five day rental. We were told to just retrieve the car and go, without an accompanied inspection. It was raining and a little dark, so we jumped in the car and drove away. A few minutes later, my son noticed dirt and trash around the back seat area. We tried to report it via phone, but no one answered at Avis. We tried several times to call again over the next 24 hours, to no avail. Finally, the central office advised us to discuss it with the manager when we returned the car. We spent an hour cleaning the dirt, stains, hair, sand, empty drink containers, and paper from the car!! Now to the point. When I dealt with the agent at the dealership, I was accused of not reporting the "incident" in a timely manner and was interrupted every time I tried to explain the circumstances. I was spoken to in such a condescending manner. The agent agreed to refund me one day's rental, however he absolutely refused to refund the taxes on that day's rental despite my request to do so. He acted as if I was robbing him personally of the additional $3.50! To top it off, I never received an apology. If the agent simply apologized, acknowledged the mistake THEY made in not cleaning the vehicle, and offered me the appropriate refund, this would be a five star review. Why the agent didn't take the high road, is beyond my understanding. I will never rent from this agency again, not because of the dirty car, but for the liberty the agent seemed to feel, in treating me so poorly. read more

Since I was going to be on the road for a few hours at a stretch, I wanted to be able to listen to my music. I brought it back and they exchanged the car with no problem. I scheduled a pick up because I sold my car, and he left me standing at the location for an hour and half, and when I finally got ahold of him he said "take a cab here." Are you kidding me?! Then when I called to extend my rental for 2 days, he tried to charge me double because I would not come and "check-in" with him while I was at work all day. After a lot of time arguing with people at customer service, I finally got them to remove the fees no thanks to Raul. And finally brings us to drop off day, the worst of all. So I showed up at my SCHEDULED ARRIVAL TIME and he says "I have to charge you a late fee". How in the world am I being charged a late fee when you scheduled me to drop off at this time. When I questioned this fee, he said "if you have a problem, then call corporate". And while I was ON the phone with corporate outside, he walks up to me and slams my receipt on the bench next to me and said "Im done". And he went and locked up Avis, and left for the day. The fact that this guy still works here is amazing and a crime. His customer service is the worst, he is a liar, rude, and will screw you. I have to rent cars regularly because of my work, I used to go to their competitors down the street one day they didn't have a car for me so I decided to give this small office a shot and they where great! I became their loyal customer ever since. All their cars are in great shape and most of the time they have good deals on upgrades in case I need more space or a nicer car for driving customers around. Also a great advantage for this location that most rental places do not offer is their parking, since they are inside a gated parking in a hotel they let me park my personal car for a day or two while I rent their car and best of all at no extra charge. I always recommend this office to all my friends, family and co-workers. read more

Then they say "initial here".....they told you that the price was what you had a price for in the reservation (I got mine through COSTCO - and am contacting them too) - and they have added in things you specifically SAID you didn't want. Since you can't read the sheet they give you, you don't even know the charges are hundreds of dollars more - for a FOUR DAY RENTAL - than what you were told. TOTAL RIP OFF.
