Knowing I needed to rent a car, I went online and prepaid for a rental car for two days. When I arrived to pick it up, I was told that I needed to pay a higher deposit due to pre-paying. I then cancelled the reservation to reserve and rent at the desk. While I was waiting, I occupied my time by calling Avis corporate and asked if I could use my traditional CREDIT card to pay the deposit, and my DEBIT card to pay for the one day rental. I was told that wasn't a problem. When the agent at the desk was available, I explained the call I just had with Avis. She had me insert my debit card, which took the deposit and one day rental. I figured she would split the charge when I entered my credit card, it tried doubling the charge. She couldn't figure out how to reverse it, so she cancelled the transaction, therefore there was no Rental Number, Contract Number or any means of tracking it. She started a new transaction, we put it all on my credit card. But the deposit was still out of my bank account for an entire month. Avis corporate said "without the rental or contract number, there was no charge". Despite the fact that I sent them screenshots of the transaction on my debit card and merchant information from my bank. This was a horrible experience, and even worse customer service and interaction. Pay a few bucks more to avoid this terrible company. If you're in the Southern California area, contact Greenleaf Rentals. They saved the day, unlike Avis. read more

This is a small rental office conveniently located close to my hotel. Joe helped me with my rental. He was friendly and helpful with my reservation. It was my first time navigating around an electric car and he took the time to show me how to handle one. I'm really impressed with the top tier customer service provided. About the only time I have gotten the exact car I reserved from Avis, and could not be happier with this particular pickup spot. This place is slow, run down and dated. They do not have an after hours drop box for your car and they don't open until 9am on Sunday. We arrived at 9am and no one showed up until about 9:10am. Very frustrating. read more

I rented a car for one day to la ex . They where suppose to charge me $105 including tax and I got my credit card testament today and I was charged $210.99 . I called them and they told me since I was suppose to pick up the car at one and Instead I pick it up in the afternoon the fee was changed. They simply was ripped off . The only reason I even gave one star is I left with a car...not the one I rented and pre paid for but at least a car. I prepaid with points and money and had to pay AGAIN when I came to pick up the car because they couldn't find my reservation! I called customer service who also couldn't find it but somehow they figured out a way to charge my credit card twice and take the points out of my account! We have a business account with Avis also and after this fiasco we'll be taking our business elsewhere! We still haven't resolved this a week after the rental! DONT TRUST AVIS! Not much point in making a reservation for a car with a GPS , if when you turn up the staff nonchalantly shrug their shoulders and say "we don't have a GPS right now". Not much use to me when I have many, many places to go and don't know one side of California from the other. Reminded me of the Seinfeld sketch. Not cheap, we got a corporate rate as this was a work visit and seems they know it because the cost was astronomical. Next time, if I am paying, I am sure I can get it ALOT cheaper and I won't bother asking for a GPS. I will use the one I had to buy for $400 because Avis La Jolla know how to take a reservation but don't know how to KEEP a reservation, which after all, is the most important part. read more

We had booked a car here months in advance for pick up on Memorial Day only to arrive at 12:30PM to a closed office. Called the number on the door which said they were out to do a drop off/pick up to no avail - no answer, no voicemail. Upon calling the central Avis number, we discovered that this office closed early due to it being Memorial Day. Not only did they give us NO notice of the early closure, but they could not give us the same reservation at the same cost at the San Diego Airport - the closest nearby location. Instead, we'd be charged 33% more than what we originally paid for AND we'd have to haul our a**es over there (a good 30 min and $25 cab ride). We asked the Avis phone rep repeatedly if there was a manager we could speak to, as we were in disbelief that we could be charged more and asked to pay to travel to another location due to something that was Avis's fault. But no, there was no one else who could override this inane situation. So instead, we're stuck paying more and lost a half day of our vacation time due to Avis's lack of transparency, lack of communication and sheer laziness. Do yourself a favor- go somewhere else- somewhere that will actually be staffed when they say they will be staffed and that will actually help you when they screw up. read more

Bad start to getting a rental for 2 weeks while staying here in LaJolla. Called yesterday, no return call. Called this morning, no return call. Booked online late last night, walked 2 miles to Avis and waited 15 minutes for employee to take care of 2 customers in front of us. I will update review as we go. Hopefully things get better in the days ahead, although we still are not in our rental car!!! OK - 1 hour later and I'm in our rental driving off and added a star. So far things improving. I am a frequent Avis renter and use this location to pick up and drop off cars occasionally. Avis, as a company, has always been fine and treated me well. This location, however, is poorly managed and has poor customer service. I returned a car with some dog hair on the back seat. They charged me $120 because they do not own a vacuum cleaner and had to take the car to the car wash and have it detailed. The customer service rep there was not accommodating, border-line rude. I recommend renting and dropping off at the airport where you can get get proper customer service and where they have the facilities to do basic cleaning of returned cars. Beware if you rent or return from this location. read more

We are visiting from out of town and I rented a car from here to take the kids to the zoo. I left my hotel at 8:15am, arrived at Avis at 8:20am, was back at my hotel at 8:35am. The whole process from start to finish was the best I've experienced, including receiving a very warm greeting when returning the car. My mother rented two cars here in the last month. Both times she chose to upgrade her car when she got to the location. Apparently the person working there was under training, or at least that was the excuse, but I guess this person forgot to remove her name from the original car rentals. Her card was charged both for the original rented car and the upgrade, BOTH times. Took a ton of phone calls and persuasion to get her money back. Make sure to check your credit card statements! A most horrible experience. We reserved an SUV weeks in advance of our trip. We also added 3 toddler seats for our 4 year old triplets. When we arrived the car was not ready and they couldn't find any toddler seats. We had to wait almost 2 hours while they figured out what to do. All that time our toddlers were tired, hungry and hard to keep under control. It was a total disaster. This is the 2nd time we have had a bad experience with Avis. Conclusion: rent your car from another company. read more

I went here to get my rental car after dropping my mercedes off at the local repair. I was there early and it opened up a little after 8am which was the posted time. I had to wait for some drivers that worked there or something to get out first. When I got to the front I was welcomed by a nice person who got me out of there quickly. I would recommend this place. I don't know the rates if they are cheap or not, but it was fine for me since I wasn't paying anyways. read more

Do not rent from these scammers! They rented me a dirty car for 24 hours, so I didn't really care. Drive it an hour north to visit friend and hour south to return it. When I got my credit card statement, there was an additional $54 cleaning fee for excessive dog hair. I didn't even have a dog with me! Even the national Avis customer care wouldn't do a thing. Highly recommendable. I own a limo company and whenever we have high demand they are able to accommodate us and provide a black/black SUV at an excellent rate. I'm hesitant to give a review until I've used a company a few times so I can review them properly. I rent a car 2-3 times a month to go to LAX and Avis is the only reasonable priced company for that. There's another Avis much closer to my house (in the Embassy Suites) but I happily go a little further for the great customer service here. Joseph runs this shop well and always goes the extra mile to help. Always remembers my name and does the little things that make me feel like a valued customer. Embassy Suites Avis by comparison. Once a car I returned had scratches on the bumper (from a previous customer) and when I got the runaround by Avis national headquarters, Joseph jumped right on it to find all the documentation and took care of it all for me. I can't think of many other people who went above and beyond to take care of me. 2 thumbs up to Joseph. read more
