This was the most insane experience I have ever had. My friend and I needed a last minute car reservation, so since I book with Avis often, I made a quick last minute reservation. When we walked into the store we were immediately dismissed, when neither her or the other worker acknowledged our presence. She then proceeded to tell us that she didn't have the car we reserved. I said whatever they had available would be fine. She took my id and credit card and then she told me she needed my company id for my discount. I have never once had to show my company id and I asked if there could be a one time exception since I didn't have it with me. She said no and then proceeded to do the reservation without the discount code. I asked her how much it would be without the discount and she rudely told me that since it's a one day reservation and she's having to do it over she didn't know yet. I then told her this was the worst customer service experience I've ever had. She still would not look at me and then my friend told her that they were being rude to us and they still didn't give us any sort of reaction. After making a new reservation, she told us it would be $130 MORE than the original quote. I then got angry and started to storm out and said they could F off.. she then proceeded TO THROW MY CREDIT CARD AND LICENSE AT ME when I went to get it back. In my life, I have never experienced someone as horrible as this woman. She is in the wrong line of business if this is how she treats people (apparently others too, considering the reviews). I rented a car on Sept 29th, 2024 at Groton Airport. The car was not ready, no service had been done. We waited for the representative to get the car gassed up. The Ford Explorer had been used as a dog kennel, the inside stunk of wet dog and our clothes became covered in dog hairs. This lasted for 8 days, it was disgusting. I called Avis on Oct 8th about it, Avis after many calls agreed to refund us 2 days of the fees. I called March 31st and asked how do I redeem my 2 days of rental on another rental. I was told a certificate for 2 free days was sent to me on October 1st 2024, and expired October 30th of 2024. I never received anything from Avis, and I didn't complain until Oct 8th. They rent you dirty cars and lie and resolving the problem. Renter beware. read more

If you are taking the time to check reviews please let me save you some time: RUN! from this location. DO NOT WALK. This branch has a TON of bad reviews for a reason. Here was my experience: I went into the branch on a Sunday. My goal was to return the car and re-rent it. (For clarification, I had originally booked through Expedia; picked up the car in Waterbury, and already "extended" my rental 3 times, so to return and re-rent was my only option and Newington is my closest branch). I explained to the gentlemen that I had been renting this vehicle for a couple weeks and would just like to continue with it. I also explained that I could not locate the branch on Expedia and inquired about the option of creating a reservation directly with the branch. The gentlemen, who was the only person there at the time, did not have answers to any of these inquiries. He called his boss and was talking with her on an airpod. During this process, while I still have no answers or reservation, the gentlemen is still talking to his boss and starts to return my rental. I asked him to stop and explain what was happening, as I still do not have a reservation, or a price for a new rental. He did not stop, as his boss was instructing him to return the rental, knowing that I did not have a reservation. Throughout this process, when I realized I was not being heard, I asked to speak directly to the woman on the phone, whose name is LISA. She refused to let him place the call on speaker at first. After asking several times and still having no answers, LISA finally came on the phone. She explained why I could not locate them on Expedia, as they are not available there. She proceeded to tell me that I could rent the car from them for about $1000 for the week, and about $300 for just the night. Ultimately I was left stranded with no rental. I give credit for this encounter to LISA. LISA, who obviously has more information and experience could have spoken with me directly instead of refusing (what a way to de-escalate a customer). LISA could have explained at the start of the inquiry that they were not located on Expedia, giving me time to go to another location that IS . LISA could have been overall nicer in her tone and approach to the situation. If you value the way you are treated and informed, GO TO WATERBURY. DO NOT GO TO LISA. This business owner hires Young/minor workers and does not pay them, eventually they end up leavin. My son started working for her in May. She kept making excuses like there is something wrong with the new hire system so she cannot add new employees. He worked for her for two and half months ( average 20 hours) in hot sun cleaning the cars. This was his first job, didn't know much about work industry. He eventually quit after not getting paid for 2/12 months. I also found out from other former employees that she hires illegal workers for the same reason. please please do not give this women business. she is manipulator, unethical, crypt women. read more

The location is way out of the way, past a large trucking facility. You have to wend your way through a gauntlet of trucks to get here. There was ONE employee on a Saturday. I was 3rd in line but waited almost an hour to get my car. She had to go out and clean the cars after doing the paperwork. I told her don't bother with my rental because I needed to go. Note that I didn't get an extra hour added to my return time. The agent was professional, and she was courteous, but she was clearly overwhelmed. Also, she didn't have time tell me how to do anything with the electronics and so I had to listen to blasting hiphop as I was driving down the highway because I couldn't figure out how to even work the radio. I also ended up with a gas guzzling SUV, even though I wanted a compact. I hate to think how long the wait was for the 7 people behind me in line. I got this rental through Costco and am going to file a complaint with them. This business is very horrible. I would never ever rent from Avis again because of this experience. read more

We would give zero stars if we could. To start, we had a PREPAID reservation for a 3 day rental. We arrive after driving through the snow to get there at 8am. We show up, they ask us to wear a mask. Fine, no big deal. We are waiting behind another gentleman who is unfortunately dealing with his own troubles with this location. We get to the counter, "ID and credit card" We believed it to be for a second form of ID since our reservation was already paid for. We were told that it was for a $250 hold and that it HAD to be a credit card, not a credit/debit card. Now we have to drive BACK to the house, through the snow and all the way back to bring a credit card for the hold. We were told that the website mentioned the $250 hold in *the fine print*. Well, guess what. There was no mention of a $250 hold in the fine print. We finally pick up our rental and go about our weekend trip. Morning Of the return: we are up early after getting in at 2:30am after driving 14 hours back home to make sure we are back in time to return it. We show up 5 before 8 am when we are scheduled to return the car. No one is at the location, doors are locked, lights are off. Supposed to be open at 8 am. On the phone with Avis customer service to find out what's going on. When letting customer service know about the situation we get HUNG UP ON. This is the 1800 number. Unbelievable. 8:26am: we see someone whip in the parking lot. Looking through the window I can see them behind the counter now. We walk to the door and it's still locked. She unlocks it and we begin to express our frustration with this situation and she told us that she was in fact there since 8. (I watched her pull in at 8:26) Then she changed her story and said she had to take someone to the train station. That "it's not uncommon for no one to be in the store". She Told us that we could have dropped the keys in the express return box outside - the sign for the express return says to place keys and rental agreement in envelope- no envelopes. The other sign says to bring keys to the counter. The entire interaction with her was horrendous. She gave us attitude when we asked about being open at 8am and the express return. Don't expect any customer service when dealing with this Avis location. read more

I went here today to rent a car. I am a school employee in Florida and we have a discount travel code that we use . I have used this code across the country in several states . When I arrived to rent my car , first and foremost, they had no car available to give us , even though the rental had been made two months ago . Then Lisa ( probably the rudest human being I've ever met ) said that I couldn't rent if I couldn't produce a government ID. I mentioned school employees do not have government IDs in Florida but I brought a paystub, proof of hire, as well as provided proof of the RECIPROCITY agreement between Florida and avis to include all employees including school employees. The reciprocity agreement dictates that I only have to provide my government email and paystub as proof to rent the car . She proceeded to tell us she wouldn't rent me the car because we were getting it TOO cheap without a government ID. She also proceeded to tell me that EVERY AVIS I've rented with across the country has failed to follow protocol and a mere school employee should never be able to use that code. Needless to say - you don't have a car for your rentals AND you show your lack of understanding across states of what you can do . I will be calling Avis to file a complaint as well as state of Florida to let them know that AVIS is not honoring their reciprocity code . Never come to this Avis. Even before we reached the counter , the way LISA the manager addressed all customers was disgusting . Avoid at all costs ! read more

Terrible location I always rent from Avis Waterbury which I never had issues with first time I use this location they try to charge me an extra day (Reversed) and they also tried to charge me a 450$ cleaning fee which the agent pointed out to me before renting that they were aware of the smell but still try to charge me after return also has been (reversed) my advice if you rent from these people relay everything through customer service before during and after! Suggested by customer service as they are aware of the sketchy business being done by this location! read more

The initial woman was pleasant and mentioned the tire pressure light was on, but she would give him $10.00 off a day. He put air in the tire, but the light did not turn off. Upon returning the car, a different not so pleasant woman was at the counter. After she checked car, she returned and rudely told him the light was on and that he was responsible. Then, she insisted he submit a claim form?!? He refused and asserted that the first employee was aware of the car's condition and asked her to check with that employee. Like the person that wrote the other positive review, I rented online through Budget then when going to pick up the car, found that it was at an Avis location (which had higher online rates, I did compare prior to making the reservation) with awful reviews! I was actually horrified to meet this Lisa person that everyone complained about, so I was happy to see a young man at the counter the morning I arrived to pick up my car. Now the young man wasn't overly personable, which was sort of a good thing since he didn't try to sell me anything I hadn't already pre-paid for with my reservation. I also must say, he had a difficult woman he was dealing with when I arrived so he was probably just a bit overwhelmed by her, arriving 3 hours early and trying to pay with a debit card that had just about exactly enough to cover the rental IF she were picking it up on time (in three hours). So, anyway, they didn't have the car I reserved (Jetta or similar), but they did get me into a new Hyundai Elantra with under 6k miles on it that worked perfectly and got good gas mileage for my trip to PA. Returning was simple and they actually owed me $1 and change after what I prepaid. I rarely ever get money returned to me, lol. So, I'd do this all over again next time! Update. I checked my credit card and was billed the $1.73, it wasn't a credit afterall, like the lady told me when returned the car. Pulled out bill and it's true, I prepaid an estimated cost and owed a balance of $1.73? A bit odd, but since it's 1.73 I'm still not complaining! read more

Awful customer service. Avoid and go somewhere else. Waited to get a reservation while the agent was vacuuming a car out back. Two of us in the office... she came in and I said the lady is dropping off a car and can go first. Got to making a reservation and she started a reservation and handed me a number. I went to verify with customer service and the website, nothing found. Went back to shop and was greeted with a rude and spit spewing woman who would not even listen as she immediately asked me for a credit card. To preface...I never write negative reviews on Yelp. Because I understand that the first experience is never the only view of an organization. But this is a repeat experience at this location that was even worse the second time. Avis should be ashamed to have Lisa, the owner of this location, as a representative serving as the face of this organization. I work for a large corporation that has a partnership with Avis. I'm more than a frequent renter for work. My company has a deal with Avis that provides our employees with a special discount code for family. To use the discount code the employee is asked to show an authorization letter to the location at the time of rental. I provided my father with an authorization letter to pick up a car from this location. Because of typo on the letter, Lisa refused to provide him the discount code. I went over while he was at the location with an updated authorization letter. She continued to refuse us service stating that because we had changed the time on our rental she wouldn't rent us a car. She is literally the only location I've seen that actually looks for an authorization letter. Throughout our time at this location we were treated to rude behavior. She deliberately ignored us, blamed us and wouldn't listen to us. Absolutely not how customer service should be handled. I suspect Lisa does not like Arabs. I'd like to note that I've never had any issues with Avis. Ultimately we left without a vehicle. Her loss. We went to the airport location and were treated to exceptional service. read more

The lady who runs this location is horrible. Currently she's yelling on the phone at her coworkers WHO HUNG UP ON HER FOR BEING RUDE. Bragging that she's a million plus store as well. The disgusting carpet and chairs tell a different story. I had a reservation at 9:30, the car was not here until 10:30. She continued to talk down to me. I didn't see a clause where they run a credit check if you use a debit card (and I continually asked her to show me where - my credit is fine, I just was curious). She was like "it's there several times omg". I said she did not need to be rude and she continued to have a snippy attitude with me. When asking if I could change to a credit card (to expedite the process), she was rude and said no, deal with it. In addition, she has a dog running around the office. I like dogs, I do not mind. This is the worst business I have ever dealt with in my entire life. The manager was extremely rude to me on the phone, I spoke to someone on the phone in the morning confirming my reservation. I surprisingly received a call from the manager 2 hours before I picked up my car telling me it was canceled and there was no way I could pick up the car. When I attempted to understand why and inquire with this joke of a manager, she gave me tangential reasons which did not give any reasonable insight into a sufficient conclusion. We ended up renting a van at another Avis location that accommodated all of our needs, and were very courteous. I've been renting several times a year from the Avis corporation for the last 11 years (I'm AVIS First status) and this independent location is the worst I've ever dealt with. I reserved a car for my Girlfriend online using my corporate discount code (which is acceptable per my company policy) and upon arrival the "owner" requested that she see a company ID, which is not acceptable per my company's policy. The Desk Agent/Owner had the gall to argue with me, and act like she knew my company's policy better than I did! My Girlfriend ended up having to make a new reservation and pay $40 more for the daily rental! The owners at this location are just greedy and trying to get all the extra money out of the customers that they can. If we just would've driven the extra 20 mins to the airport location I wouldn't have had the displeasure of dealing with this office. I'm sure the husband & wife owner team of this place will be nice as pie and treat you well if you're a sucker walking in off the street paying full blown rates and buy all the bogus insurances. read more

I rented a minivan from them to drive down to FLA this past holiday season. We wanted to pick it up early but they said we could not. When we picked up the minivan, the whole wiper blades/area and the roof were covered in thick ice. I removed the ice as best I could from the wiper blade area and took the car home to pack it. On the way down the coast , pieces of ice would break off of the roof and launch into the air crash dwn on the highway for a good 3-5 hours. On the way home I smelled a strong tobacco odor. Upon further inspection I found Dutch Master Cigars in random spots thru-out the van. This explained the overwhelming smell of smoke permeating thru the van. I had noticed that the middle seat of the mini van had the head rest placed high and blocked by view out the back window. I tried to move the headrest down but it was broken and it could not be moved down OR removed. I ended up having to completely remove the back middle seat so that I could see out the back window. On the way to my destination the "maintenance required" light came on. Then the low air tire pressure light came on.....fun! The radio/cd player light also flickered off and on, and different shades of lightness as we hit bumps in the road. While this may seem petty, it was very distracting for the first 3 or 4 hours of the trip. On the way home, the van ran out of wiper fluid, which was also displayed with another lit up icon on the dashboard. It was like the dashboard was trying to get into the holiday spirit with all the lights that were on. This was my first time using Avis after having used Hertz exclusively for 10+ years. What a mistake that was. Never EVER again. They also decided to charge me for returning the car with 1/2 a tank of gas, which is what they gave me! They said it was full when they gave it to me, but they have no proof of that. I would recommend staying FAR away from them. read more

Wife made a reservation online, went to pick it up this morning, friggin guy behind the counter tells us that the credit card and license had to match, ok so I have my wife give him her license and card, nope, can't do that now since it was made in her name....so we tell the guy fine she will drive it for the week and I will not, nope, can't do that. What a TERRIBLE experience!!! I booked a car rental through hotwire online - was supposed to be a 4 door standard car or comparable to it. Upon asking for my license and credit card, the woman at the counter told me she could not process my payment because the back of my credit card was not signed and instead said "C.I.D". After confirming that it indeed my card (same name and everything) she said it was "company policy" to not accept payment and needed another form of ID with an address attached to it. Uhh okay? I explained to her that many people write that in attempts to prevent fraud and that is the purpose of providing an ID to accompany it. In my many years of renting cars from different companies, I have never heard of this happening. I told her I would then process the payment with a debit card instead which has a picture of myself and my name - she then rudely stated she required a credit score check since it would be processed with a debit card instead. Again, I have never heard of this and began to question her. She proceeded to be rude and threatened that she could cancel the transaction at any time. I kindly asked for my cards and ID back and told her that I would be taking my business elsewhere. I would advise no one take their business here either as the woman in the front was incompetent, rude and served as an underwhelming excuse for customer service. read more

Tina was extremely personable and friendly. The car was clean and conveniently located. The entire experience was terrific! Note: I've had unpleasant experiences with Avis (not this location). The only vehicle available was a larger car which would be +$20 to an already expensive reservation. They would not work with us or try to rectify the situation. The counter worker had her manager on the phone who was not trying to fix the situation at all. Holy cramp this place is awful. I should have known when the parking lot looked like a junk yard. I had reserved a full sized car and pre paid when I booked. On my arrival,I was told they had no cars other then a super sized SUV which was unacceptable for my long trip out of state. I waited a hour before the manager who was up at the airport finally put me in a smaller SUV. I personally think one star is generous. They have an out of control franchisee at their Newington, CT office, which is the closest to my house. I have tried to avoid this branch, but its proximity finally made me go. In the past, I have gone there, and I have witnessed the branch manager/Franchise owner (Lisa) yelling at customers either on the phone or in line in front of me. I have received dirty or sub-par cars consistently there. I showed up this time, and the car was not ready. Even though I was paying with my company card, she demanded to see my employee ID to prove it was a corporate rental. Typically, they collect these from us at the home office so we don't lose them, but I happened to have it thankfully. When I asked why they needed to see it (since I've been renting for years, it's never been requested), instead of explaining it to me as if I were a human being, Lisa told me that she was entitled to ask and since she did, I must provide it. Having spent a half hour there already, I was frustrated. I rummaged through my briefcase, and produced the ID, and I placed it down forcefully on the counter. She told me that this was inappropriate and that she was on the verge of denying service to me. I then reminded her that I had to call corporate on her once before (5 years ago), and with that, she denied service to me. I went to the Tweed New Haven, Ct branch and received excellent service, and I complained to customer service. I then heard from the Jesse, the district manager, and she was very apologetic. That said, when I want to rent a car, I either have to drive out of my way or deal with this branch, and it can be a little inconvenient. I looked up this location on google reviews, and this Lisa person is consistently mentioned as someone who has berated customers, thrown them out, and even called the police on several (which she also threatened of me). I did not use inappropriate language, make any threats, or use any insults. I became a little agitated when I did not receive very good service. That is all I am guilty of. I told the district manager, and I will mention here that I do not understand how someone like this could be allowed to continue to represent Avis. I have witnessed her behavior long enough.
