I rented a car with avis through an uber contract.I do NOT ever recommend doing this Avis wasn't really helpful when it came to and issues and uber was even worst. There was a young lady that tried her best to help me but once I started getting charged twice a week instead of one that became a problem. I returned the car on 3/3/26 an l so still haven't received my refund. I also was charged that same day 354.03. Ive been calling Avis customer service and they have no answers for me other than go back to the location I rented the car from. The car payments a week are ridiculous. And don't ever think calling there corporate office they're no help either. I would recommend using your own car or Waiting until you can get one. I was kicked out of my home for not being able to afford rent because my Avis car was a lot every week. And uber wasn't brining in money. I have the business program with Budget and have basically been on a mini lease for 3yrs. This location has a much different feel than any other. I was able to pick up a car without issues. While I was at the gym, someone hit the parked car. I was very surprised that the location required that I drive the damaged vehicle back to them to get a new vehicle. Typically even if the oil change light comes on, I have been directed to take the vehicle to the closest location for an exchange. When I did complete my contract and finally return the vehicle, I was charged for gas on the damaged vehicle. Who thinks to fill the tank of a damaged vehicle? I would give ZERO stars if I could. I rented a car to drive across country and was given a vehicle with 4 bald tires. I noticed after about 15 mins of driving. After being stranded for 3 hours waiting for a new vehicle, I witnessed there are absolutely no inspections after vehicles are returned. Just a quick wash and right to the next person. The woman at the Avis location is Merrillville, IN (get zero stars) was rude, and unprofessional. I was asking her questions and while I was talking, she was talking out loud reading something. Also, she acted as if she could not tell me what types of SUV's were at their location. However when I called another location they were able to provide that information without issue. This location is horrible, and they not only lost my personal business, but my company's business. They need to get this employee in customer service and professionalism training and fast. Today , I had another bad experience with Avis rental service. I'm very proactive in assuring my car reservations and fine tooth combing policy's and procedure. As, I arrived a gentleman was standing at the front desk which I thought was a customer ( with the employees) as they continue their conversation. . Then I was finally asked by the gentleman ( African American with a strong accent) stated he can assist . I presented my credentials and I was told that my first card wasn't acceptable ( I asked prior arrival and read policy and said yes we accept ). Then I presented my other card and was flat out told no we don't accept! I asked where are the policy and only repeated we don't accept! I said again show me the policy , only received the same response! Prior day, I reserved for Sunday and was called only hour or less to say "we don't have any cars". To only arrive on Monday which I received a call saying no one return their rental check back at 1pm . Walter said , he'll make sure a car is available. Only to arrive as stated in previous paragraph! Moreover, the customer service is non-existent, and the attitude of gentleman was very appalling for a car rental where customer spend their money to get great customer service and treated with professionalism. The place needs a serious reboot and refresher course of customer service and humility. If not customer such as myself will take their money else where as I did and search for professionalism and courtesy . Lastly , I went to Enterprise and the staff went above and beyond! It was truly an amazing experience with Enterprise! My number one car rental place is Enterprise! Avis and Budget need to take a lesson from Enterprise! Customer Service is not part of this company. Avis will take reservations , when they have no autos available. And then try to charge you later for cancelling. BAD BUSINESS !!!! Truly the worst experience by far and don't even deserve 1 star. I refused the first 2 cars at Avis due to engine light on(but they said I should be fine) and then then next car smelled SO and the windows were down! The 3rd car(mind you all of them from FLA and I was in IL were old-70,000-89,000 miles) And I should have refused the 3rd car, the oldest car bc it had 1/2 of the front of the front window had a sun glare strip on it that was very distracting in what I knew would be a cloudy rainy 4 day visit. The car sometimes took 2 tries to start too. The bigger issue was the car leaked water when it rained thru the door and it rained daily and hard at times. My seat was wet the whole trip. I ended up sitting on a garbage bag and my pants still got wet daily. While driving, rain also leaked on my feet and dripped on me. I called Avis, got disconnected x3and pretty much was told eventually after wasting 1 hour of time that I could try to exchange it but no way of knowing who had cars available ahead of time and that I could drive around. The nearest Avis was 45 min out of my way so I took a chance-no cars. They also never turned in the EZ pass I paid for. So disappointed. When I returned to the airport, I spoke to someone who was non apologetic who said what do you want, half day off the rental and when I reiterated that $400 was a lot to pay for sitting in a garbage bag, having wet pants and shoes and carrying extra clothes everywhere I went, needing to change etc? She then said fine, I'll reimburse you but refused to give me a receipt And said she'd sent to my email-which never happened. I called AVIS again a few days later. The person on the phone was rude but eventually after he spoke to his supervisor(who he refused to transfer me to and told me if he did, I would not get this offer from him) he'd give me $200 off, only reimbursed $150 and email me a 3 day coupon for a free rental good for 1 year. When I looked at the coupon, it cannot be used til June-Dec(it is Oct) which Ofcourse likely won't need or use a rental during that time period. All around awful, poor customer service and just disappointing. Funny thing is, I've used budget before with zero issues and they are sister companies. read more

**************SCAMMERS-*************** Watch out for their under 75 mile rate fee. 15.99 . I received the van with a 3/4 full gas tank. I returned it with with the same amount. Got charged 15.99 for not filling it up all the way. I called to complain to customer service because no one will answer at the Merrillville office and they want proof that I had 3/4 of a tank. When we got there to pick it up, we were told that we have to call AVIS directly and ask for cancellation and a full refund since they dont have any cars available! We didnt book this car for fun, it was after an accident happened and we needed one. Should the website not be able to tell you the right availability? Had a reservation at 830am got there a little after 9am. I was the only one there. Lady asked for my name i gave it to her she said they would be right with me. Her and a young guy went to the back. Manger came in went to her office. Older guy behind the counter said he would be right with me. long story short 6 ppl came in after me and all did, they paperwork and left in a car. 2 customers and myself are in the lobby so i asked both of them what time was their app. he said 930am so now I'm pissed I called an Uber when the older guy came back in i told him i wanted to cancel. Didn't ask why our anything. So now I'm outside waiting for my uber and the older guy from the counter tells me he had to take ppl with a reservation first. I told and showed him my reservation on my phone. His reply i thought you were a walk in. I said how when the only thing yall asked me was for my last name and how long i need the car. Of course people hate car rental places, but these guys were rude from the beginning. Basically if you call with questions the answer is "I don't know", and they won't find out. There isn't a gas station within a 20 minute drive. They have very little selection, the cars are really cruddy and not well taken care of, and you are treated as a nuisance instead of an asset. read more

Terrible experience. Terrible customer service. Made a reservation and pre-paid. Was left a voice message 15 minutes prior to my reservation to be told they didn't have any cars and to call customer service. After I get through 15 different surveys and prompts, they finally told me it was not a working number in my area? So I called the store number back just to see what was up and it rang probably 25 times and no one ever picked up. The lady that left my voice message was rude and didn't care about the inconvenience she caused. I was leaving for a trip right after work and was in a rush. Immediately called enterprise in crown point on broadway and told them about my terrible experience and they promised to match my price with Avis and gave me a free upgrade to an SUV! I rented a car for work purposes during the COVID-19 pandemic back in April. I work in healthcare and have been traveling back and forth to different sites and didn't want to put the mileage on my own vehicle and Avis offered a promo for healthcare workers that seemed very reasonable (463 a month) at the time. I have had the car for a total of two months and was looking to rent the car again for a third month. For the first two months I was able to take care of everything over the phone with no issues. The manger, which I can not think of his name was very nice and very accommodating and made every thing really simple and painless. In calling to rent the car and pay my 463 balance I was "greeted" by manager Mrs Frazier. This lady was by far the most rude person I have ever seen in my life. As soon as she answered the phone and asked how she could help me she placed me on hold while I was explaining the purpose of my call. No lie this lady had the worse attitude was very rude very incompetent and I have no clue how she's been able to be a manager of anything. She placed me on hold (the elevator/hold music is loud and obnoxious) over ten times. Nevertheless she had no idea of the promo that was going and tried to charge 800 something dollars. I couldn't get anything handled with this ridiculous broad so it ended up costing me extra because I had to wait to go in to pay balance and give them back their raggedy car. Mrs Frazier is a piss poor manger and I really hope she gets reprimanded. She has no business dealing with human life. Go work at a factory Mrs Frazier. Do us all a favor. read more
