I do not recommend SIXT based on how a post-rental issue was handled…read more I rented a vehicle in Munich and specifically selected and paid for cross-border authorization because I planned to travel into Austria. In addition, I purchased a valid Austrian digital vignette for the vehicle's license plate prior to entering Austria. The vignette confirmation clearly shows activation on 24.01.2026 at 14:22. The alleged toll event cited by SIXT occurred on 25.01.2026 at 13:44 -- well within the validity period. Weeks after the rental, I was charged €200 for an Austrian "substitute toll." I provided SIXT with the digital vignette documentation showing the plate number and activation timestamp covering the alleged violation. Their response was that they "do not check whether the fine is legit or not and act according to the information provided by the relevant authority." In other words, there was no substantive review of the documentation provided. The toll authority invoiced SIXT as the registered owner of the vehicle. SIXT paid the assessment and passed the charge through to me without evaluating whether toll coverage was active. When I asked that they review the documentation or address the matter directly with the authority as the registered owner, I was told to appeal it myself. This experience raises concerns about transparency and dispute handling. When customers pay additional fees for cross-border travel and independently purchase toll compliance, it is reasonable to expect documentation to be reviewed before a penalty is passed through. The vehicle itself was fine. The issue is the post-rental handling and unwillingness to engage in meaningful review when clear documentation was provided. If you are renting in Europe -- especially crossing borders -- make sure you understand exactly how toll issues are handled and get everything documented. Based on this experience, I would not choose SIXT again.

The alleged toll event cited by SIXT occurred on 25.01.2026 at 13:44 -- well within the validity window. Weeks later, SIXT assessed a €200 substitute toll and charged it to my card. I provided the digital vignette documentation showing the correct plate and activation timestamp. SIXT's written response was that they "do not check whether the fine is legit or not and act according to the information provided by the relevant authority." In other words, there was no substantive review of compliance documentation. The toll authority invoiced SIXT as the registered owner. SIXT paid the assessment and passed the charge through without evaluating the evidence provided. For corporate travelers and travel managers, this presents a material concern: post-rental penalties appear to be processed automatically, with limited internal review, and the burden shifted entirely to the renter--even when documentation exists. If your organization has cross-border travel in Europe, understand how toll disputes are handled before selecting a rental provider. Based on this experience, I would not recommend SIXT for business travel where regulatory exposure and post-rental accountability matter.

Sixt - That's IXT response back to me when asking them to review my documentation.

Sixt - Scammers! Fraudulent claim. You can see the employee in the background. I took pictures and they are still trying.

I rented a vehicle in Munich, selected cross-border authorization, and independently purchased a valid Austrian digital vignette before entering Austria. The vignette confirmation shows activation on 24.01.2026 at 14:22. The alleged toll event cited by SIXT occurred on 25.01.2026 at 13:44 -- clearly within the active validity period. Despite complying with the regulations and providing timestamped proof showing the vehicle was covered, SIXT charged me €200 for a substitute toll weeks later. When I submitted the documentation, their written response was that they "do not check whether the fine is legit or not and act according to the information provided by the relevant authority." Let that sink in: you can follow the rules, pay for the required toll coverage, provide clear documentation -- and the company will not even evaluate whether the charge is legitimate before passing it through to you. As a foreign traveler in a regulatory system you're not native to, you reasonably expect the rental company -- as the registered owner of the vehicle -- to review documentation and assist when something appears incorrect. Instead, the burden was pushed entirely back onto me. If you're renting for tourism and crossing borders, be aware: post-rental penalties may be processed automatically, and documentation may not be meaningfully reviewed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend SIXT for cross-border travel in Europe. Transparency matters. Compliance should matter. Customer advocacy should matter.
