We took at 4 week trip to Europe. We rented our car through our travel agent in the US before we left. AutoEurope was the rental company. We paid before we left for the week we intended to use the car (about $260). We picked up the car at the Munich Airport after waiting an hour in line. The lady was nice, she suggested a 'free upgrade' since we had ordered a smaller car and they didn't have the one we wanted. I asked about late return, and she also made sure that I understood this was no problem, it would be $25 per day. We ended up needing the car 2 extra days. We called 2 days before the end of the period, 3 different numbers on the materials we were given. The phone was NEVER answered -- not even a voice message system. Called day before end of first week - no answer, no voice mail. Called the first extended day and the second extended day -- same story. Took the car in. Got a receipt that showed the $260 or so we had paid, no extra charges. Got home. Looked at bank card bill. Hertz billed us an ADDITIONAL $468. They charged us for the original rental, about $80 per day for the 2 add'l days, and then charged us for an upgrade, a second driver and insurance, all of which we expressly rejected. This is my second bad experience with Hertz in Germany. The prior trip they substituted a D class for a C class Mercedes (which we had expressly ordered and paid for) and four of us with luggage didn't fit in that car - but they managed to close the desk before we could walk to the garage and back. We are now 10 weeks into fix this with our bank, the travel agency, and Hertz. Hertz now claims that there were two trips this October and we rented 2 cars!... No more Hertz for us. read more
