Not sure Avis understands the meaning of Preferred?? Been standing in line for almost an hour as a Preferred member? Not good.

Changing the flat tire with the spare found in the trunk on the side of a busy highway less than 10 miles from the airport Avis

We pre-arranged a rental via Avis Preferred and was told it would be ready for pick-up. We arrived at our designated pick up time and we were told that, even though we pre-arranged we had to wait in line. We were in line for TWO HOURS before we reached the desk. Once at the desk, they saw we reserved a car but for some reason didn't have anything available and so we had to wait for them to find something. I'm extremely unclear what advantage we had to reserving a car in advance if we waited with everyone else and didn't have a car ready. After finally getting a vehicle, about 15 minutes into driving we saw the tire pressure start to drop and we got a total flat. We called Avis and asked for guidance--we were put on hold for quite some time. We were then told we could change the tire to the spare ourselves on a busy highway and then drive back to the airport to get a new rental or go get a new tire and be reimbursed. We got back to the airport and were greeted as inconveniences upon return. No empathy or apologies from any Avis employees. We went to the desk with the paperwork to get a new car and we were told we had to go to the end of the line that took us two hours last time. At this point, we begged for service because we were running extremely late due to the two hour wait (for a car they said would be ready and waiting), spent almost an hour addressing the flat, and then going back to get a new car. I will never be using Avis again. Not only was the reservation system not at all as described, but they showed little to no care when we had a tire issue on a car that they had just given us. I would give zero stars if I could.

Here is why I left Avis. They will always be the longest line. I rent a car at airports once a month and no matter what state I am in here is what it looks like. Never going back.

Absolutely not. I understand it's the holiday. However, who ever manages this place must have allowed all of its employees to take off. Only 3 people working. The line is ridiculously long. Just a reminder to never ever use Avis again

Now with full knowledge that car rental agencies often get poor reviews, this outlet does seem to have a lot of trouble getting out of its own way. I don't know if it's because they are the big dog here at the Charlotte airport, or they just book more than they can handle ... but the wait can be interminable at times (see pictures showing line at registration desk and line at car retrieval). And while the wait times can be very long, it doesn't seem to be because they don't have staff operating the desk ... there is staff there but they are overwhelmed. It appears that Avis and Budget have combined their businesses and work together ... as is obvious in how the side-by-side two positions work together. I think if we were to use Avis/Budget again we would only do it if we had FastPass ... their version of skip the line and go directly to your car. But on the day we were there as shown in the pictures, you still would have had to wait in the second line. (Remember line 1 was to get the paperwork done, Line 2 was to actually get the car.) Next time we might rent from Hertz or National which is located just down the row of desks ... and appears to have no lines whatsoever. Once again maybe that's because Avis is the big player here and not Hertz and National. Avis is just not run very well at this location ... I like Avis but not here at Charlotte.

DO NOT COME HERE!!!! If I could leave ZERO STARS I would! My boyfriend (res #645663723 given ...should have been (res #27237041us6) and I rented a full size car, only to be told they didn't have one, and gave us an old rattling Honda Pilot that CLEARLY needs maintenance. I attached a video of the noise it made. Also it would surge forward while driving even though he had his foot on the brakes. We've rented cars all across the country and this is our first and LAST time using this company. We were quoted a price of $48.17 with taxes/etc. The estimated price on the rental was $80. The guy that waited on us was told we had a company discount and he still used the higher rate. AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO NOT COME HERE!!!!

I'm conflicted on the number of stars to give... I'll start with the positives. I'd certainly give a solid 5 stars to the one gentleman at the counter. It is probably not his fault. He is the only one serving a long line of people needing rent. He was attentive, accommodating, personable and very funny. His humor helped a situation that was less than a good customer experience. This man deserves a raise. Unfortunately I'm forgetting his name. But something tells me if you meet him, you'll know who he is because he's very charismatic and does a fantastic job! The experience itself needs help. With one man behind the counter assisting a very long line of people that takes about 10 minutes per person, the process could be way over an hour if you were towards the back of the line. There has to be better process to get your people out the door and into the rental car. Often times I saw people come back from trying to retrieve their cars that was given the wrong car or the car was not up to par. You can do better. Make the changes and look where your pain points are to get your customers in their cars quicker.

Clean your cars and maintain them please. Our car was dirty with horrible suspension. Even the key fob was taped together. Employee RP11359 cleaned this car.

The pick up bus runs every 10 minutes. It is very convenient especially if you are preferred.

I am returning a car to AVIS at Charlotte Douglas Airport. I have not done this before. One person in my party has difficulty walking. How far is the car return from the American check in? Is there a shuttle if it's a distance? Thank you.

Well, if I remember correctly, it is not TOO bad a walk, and probably not long enough to merit a shuttle -- maybe 5 minutes due to the construction?

They had online check in which expedited things significantly. Then the lady who we went to get the car, Seraiah was fabulous. Her bright, happy attitude made me so happy (we'd had a horrible trip until that point). She went above and beyond to make us feel valued. It really meant so much because not only was she efficient at her job, but the extra energy and friendliness helped me calm down after the awful airport experience. Then the lady at the gate who checked out the selected car was also exceptionally friendly and easy to talk to. The lady who checked us in at drop off was also awesome. I don't know what is going on at this Enterprise for them to have such cheerful, awesome employees. I loved it. No stress, minimal wait, exceptional customer service. 5+ stars for this Enterprise.

I really appreciated the help, it was a lot going on that day and we had already began to leave the airport. I also got the Insurance through Priceline , not Budget since it was cheaper. I don't usually get the insurance , but since I was going to be staying in Myrtle Beach for a few days I wanted to be covered since theft , vandalism , and such are a problem now more there. I still love Myrtle Beach though. I also visited friends and family in both NC and SC. After having it a couple days I noticed a charge for the Insurance through Budget. I tried calling several times and couldn't get through to the airport location. When I called the 1-800 number ( in India ) they wouldn't take it off and said I would have to talk to the airport location itself either on the phone or upon return. When I returned it I spoke with one of the reps and they took it off and said on my Hertz Gold it has me automatically taking the insurance , so I went online and changed that. I never had it set on my account and last time I rented I didn't get charged , but somehow it got changed to authorize insurance upon rental. Of course the walk from the terminal in Charlotte to your rental car area is terrible and they were doing some remodeling. Since I'm Hertz Gold I went directly to the car area and went inside the office there to get my keys , contract , etc and find out where my car was parked , it was right next to the office. The car was clean and I inspected for damage and it all looked good. When I drove out to the gate I noticed the low tire pressure light on one of the tires and it was only down a couple pounds according to the gauge. I stopped at like a 7-11 with an air pump and added a few pounds and was on my way. A few days later the light comes on again and I added air again to the tire. I didn't see any nails in the tire or anything like that , slow leak. I spent almost a week in Myrtle Beach and the last day again I had to add air to the tire before heading back to Charlotte. When I arrived I told them about the tire and it needed to be checked or replaced. The car was nice to have and I had the top down almost the entire trip , the weather was perfect. It got pretty good MPG too , more than my own car. Of course it had all the tech stuff for the radio and Navigation.

Once we arrived we were told there were no cars available even if you reserved. It was stated that there were 30 reservations in front of us with no car available. They said they would call an uber for us for $380 to take us where we needed for the night but with no rental. Later on, we called to cancel the reservation to avoid any charges and they tried to say the car was picked up. We finally got it settled and while asking for confirmation on the cancelation the worker we were talking to hung up on us mid question. Horrible service, and horrible preparation. Would not use this service again. Now me and my family are stranded at a hotel trying to find a last minute car rental when we thought we had a reservation.

HOWEVER, beside the service Renita provided, it was not the best experience. There were many counters at this rental car area and the only one with a long line was Alamo. I thought, "just my luck". They seemed severely understaffed and overworked. I felt for the staff. If you have extra time you want to kill - by all means rent through Alamo@ Charlotte Airport. If you are trying to leave the airport ASAP, then I do not recommend. Unfortunately, because of my poor experience, I would be hesitant to rent from Alamo, at least this location, in the future.

I booked a 7-passenger Mitsubishi Expander through the SIXT website using the flexible booking option. When I arrived, I realized I didn't need such a large vehicle anymore and asked to switch to a smaller car that was available. I was not asking for anything free. I simply asked to be charged fairly for the smaller vehicle. Instead, I was told that changing the reservation would count as a cancellation and would involve about a 15% fee, which essentially removed the savings from switching to a cheaper car. So even though I drove away in a smaller vehicle, I still paid almost the same price as the larger one. This is what felt unfair. If a customer books a smaller car and asks to upgrade to a larger one, the company would obviously charge the difference. When the situation is reversed and the customer wants a cheaper vehicle, the same principle should apply. Travelers should also be aware of the insurance structure. I was charged about $107.55 for Third Party Liability, but the way it was explained at the counter made it clear that this coverage was minimal, and additional coverage was strongly recommended for about the same amount again. Also, if you rely on your credit card insurance instead of purchasing the company's full coverage, the security deposit increases from $1,000 to $3,000. The staff was courteous, but these policies were not clearly explained before booking. If I had known these details in advance, I likely would have chosen another rental company.

BEWARE - I have never written a review before but feel obligated to warn people about this company…read more We rented a Yukon Denali XL from this "premium" car rental company for a trip. On our way back, the car broke down while driving down a major US highway. Thankfully I was able to steer my family to the side of the road safely but the car wouldn't restart. I get that cars malfunction and I'm not blaming the company for that per se, but it was the company's response that was baffling. We called the helpline number they provided and explained the situation. For the next 2 hours, they read their corporate policies to me for reasons why they couldn't help us, passing us off to four different people. Despite pleading with them to send a wrecker or another car or a driver or something they refused despite being aware of the dangerous situation. We were miles away from the nearest exit and it was pitch black. The car was dying so hazard lights eventually got dimmer and we were sitting just feet from the right lane. They said we were in too dangerous of a situation to send help and needed to get a wrecker to tow us to the nearest gas station before they could do anything. Obviously no wrecker has enough space for all the family and dogs. Finally they agreed to send a car from 3 hours away to our location (it had to come from an airport destination despite having a location 45 minutes away). By that time, I had began exploring my own options for getting my family home and ultimately hired a driver from a nearby city (Uber wasn't available where we were). Obviously this transcends bad service and shows a blatant disregard for customer safety. Feel free to move forward with the small discount they offer you but just know you are completely on your own if anything goes wrong with the car. I can tell you right now to go with another option and thank me later.
