I appreciated the efficiency even more this year with the pandemic. Several years ago, I had an abnormal mammogram and had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Suzanne Dabbous. She explained what she observed and suggested a biopsy. That process was handled very well and thankfully it was due to calcification, and nothing cancerous. In September 2023, my mother had an MRI at American Dynamic Imaging in San Antonio after an earlier…read moreultrasound had already shown suspicious lesions on her liver. The radiologist's report said there were "no pathologic liver mass lesions." Only a few weeks later, she underwent another MRI at a different imaging center. That exam showed extensive cancer throughout her liver, including multiple nodules and larger lesions. A later medical review confirmed the cancer had been visible in the first MRI. Because the September MRI was reported as normal, my mother never received cancer treatment. She passed away on November 8, 2023, only receiving pain relief in her final days. The suffering she endured and the loss to our family were devastating. I am sharing this so that other families know to ask questions and seek second opinions when results don't match what the clinical situation suggests.

When I was paying for the patient portion of my services, I asked for an itemized receipt for HSA reimbursement purposes. She flatly told me that the price quote estimate I had received prior to coming in for my appointment was my itemized receipt. However, I pointed out to her that what had been given to me was just a price quote estimate, and not proof of my payment since that estimate was given to me before I came in on my appointment day. She grudgingly gave me a receipt and asked me to have a seat in the lobby. I already thought it was kind of funny that she didn't ask for the mammogram and the breast ultrasound copies I had brought with me, based on pre-visit instructions. It was only the really friendly mammogram tech who asked for the mammogran and breast ultrasound paper orders after she received me in, when it really should have been the front desk receptionist. Both the mammogram tech and the breast ultrasound tech were super friendly, courteous and made me feel welcome. I would give them 5 out of 5 for exceptional patient care :) ! However, the front desk reception wasn't too impressive that particular day :( . I would give the front desk reception more like a 3 out of 5. I also think it might be much more efficient, and it would make more sense, for mammogram and breast ultrasound orders to be scanned or faxed directly to the STRIC imaging facility. This was how my previous STRIC imaging center in the San Antonio Medical Center district handled orders from my OB/Gyn, and also how Baptist Imaging in Westover Hills handled orders as well when I used to go to them.

When I arrived, I was told that I would need to have both a breast ultrasound and a mammogram. I asked about the cost, and unfortunately, the total was more than I could afford. I explained that I could pay for the ultrasound, but not for both studies. What upset me the most was being told that I could have the ultrasound, but that my results would not be released to me unless I also had the mammogram. I found this extremely upsetting and concerning. I understand that the facility may have its own recommendations regarding which imaging studies should be performed, but I don't believe a patient should be placed in a position where they can receive a test but are denied access to their results because they cannot afford an additional test. I was not refusing medical care; I was trying to receive the test that had been ordered by my doctor and that I could afford at that time. Patients should be treated with transparency, respect, and consideration for their financial circumstances. I left feeling very frustrated and disappointed by the way this situation was handled.

I met with PA Laura Silva and she was fantastic. She made the entire wellness exam a non-stressful experience and she listened patiently to my history with my pain. There was no pain or discomfort during my annual pap, and she scheduled me for the same-day mammogram (my first ever). Laura also ordered full bloodwork and caught I had hypothyroidism, something I plan to bring to my new PCP's attention.
