He plugged in his computer and explained what he was looking for, then brought me along on a test drive, pointing out a couple of sounds I hadn't really noticed. Then when he put the car on the lift, he brought me underneath with him and showed me everything he was looking at. He found that all four brake rotors were rusted (which I got the dealer to fix for free, saving me $700), but gave the car the all clear besides that. Overall, an extremely friendly and useful experience. Here's the kicker, though: because he had made me wait for 20 minutes or so, he insisted that I not pay him anything for the inspection. Wow.

They charged me nearly a grand claiming it needed this, that and the other thing needed overhauling. The 2nd time the Camry was idle for a long time (8 months!) again the battery was dead, tires were low, oil had turned to goo, etc. Total charge to get it roadworthy again? $35. That's right, just the cost of the oil change. And he told me to get new rear tires soon. Ask for Victor, he is honest, friendly, and knows his stuff. I replaced the bumper with an OEM part and decided to give High Street Garage a try as Eric down at Pete's Garage has spoken highly of them when I have asked about Inspections in the past. I drove down there and saw an older man with white hair in the open inspection bay. I walked up, said hi and asked if they were doing inspections. He must have seen me drive in with the "R" sticker. He immediately started in on me saying he would not inspect the vehicle and I should go back to where it was initially inspected. I just asked why he wouldn't do the inspection and he just got louder and said "if I didn't repair it, I won't re inspect it." It was an OEM bumper for christ sakes, and it took me all of 2 hours to remove and replace. This was the first time I have had a vehicle rejected so I was not aware of the need to go back to the original inspection station. I would have thought that since these are State Inspections, the process would be uniform across all service stations. It looked to me like he was having a bad Monday and decided to give a bit of that attitude to me. I'll cross this station off my list. Not the way to treat a person or a potential customer.

But once you find it, you'll discover an honest mechanic who truly knows his stuff. I came in to get a second (and honestly third) opinion after the dealer tried to tell me I needed a bunch of work done that didn't quite add up. The dealer's estimate was sky-high, and another local shop wasn't much better. Here, the owner took the time to actually show me what was wrong with my car, explaining everything clearly and breaking it down piece by piece. Turns out, I only needed a new control arm and brake caliper, not the laundry list of unnecessary repairs the dealer was pushing. The owner definitely has a personality--he's a very funny guy. I could tell right away he's a genuinely good guy who takes pride in being honest with his customers. I read some of the other reviews before coming in, and after my experience, I have to say: they've got him all wrong. His daughter works there too, and she's the perfect complement to her dad--so kind, friendly, and patient, making sure all my questions were answered and that I understood everything before leaving.
