As a chicken tikka masala fan, I enjoyed their butter chicken the most. It's the closest thing they have to chicken tikka masala--which they don't have, they only have chicken tikka which is dry and quite spicy, has no creamy sauce. I also liked the okra fried, which is a type of fry I'm not used to seeing! It's got flavor, and I also loved the chutney and sauces on the table! I enjoyed a Dishoom Margarita which was strong in alcohol content and flavor, and a nice addition to the meal. They have an interesting drink menu, where you will find lots of nonalcoholic and rather healthy options! They have a small shelf in the middle of the room where they sell some of their chai and cookbooks amongst other things.

In my opinion, there are 2 main things to know about Dishoom: it's an Indian restaurant that is a chain, with 11 locations worldwide. The food is really good for a chain, bit it doesn't begin to come close to a restaurant that takes care of of its individual customers. Walking in, there's lots of energy. People are having a good time, there's no question. We were seated upstairs where there must have been around 40 tables. All of the staff are walking around in a hurry, cause everything here is in a hurry. The intention is to get you our in less than an hour. They want you in, through, and out. I saw this with multiple tables. Our server Yanko came to our table quite promptly and helped us make selections, both for food and drinks. For the first time in my experience eating in a restaurant, the appetizers arrived minutes before our cocktails. They came so fast that we didn't even think it was our order. And then moments after the drinks arrived, all of the main dishes and sides were placed on the table. With no way to keep anything warm. All of this with 10 minutes of placing the order. I appreciate prompt service, but this takes it to an absurd extreme. Our appetizers included the house Chaat and prawn koliwada. I enjoyed the prawns more but the flavors were facile, not close to what I expect and have enjoyed in excellent Indian restaurants. The main dishes were the Goan monkfish curry and Sali Goan. These were also just OK, absolutely nothing special. The cheese naan was soggy, though the flavor was good. This was an unacceptable texture for a naan. Dessert was Basmati Kheer, flavorful Basmati rice with fruit compote on top. In between and unneeded, was a thin layer of creme brulee. I did enjoy my tea: ginger, lemon and honey and my wife liked her mint tea. I do not know the restaurant scene in Edinburgh, we've been here for 4 days. But this is just not a place I'deven consider returning to. It's really a factory that feeds folks, not a restaurant that cares for its customers. The business model had been optimized to maximize income with lots of throughput. What's been almost completely lost in my opinion, is the heart and soul of the dining experience.

I had chicken tikka balti, which was lovely, I was surprised just how much chicken there was in the dish! It was cooked to an excellent standard and had lots of flavours running through it. The boyff had lamb jalfrazzi and he said it was excellent! He didn't talk the whole way though and was just nodding and mmmmn'ing! We had some Bombay potatoes as a side and they were delicious! Slow to brink us the drinks menu, the table for 5 was too small to accomodate everything that we ordered. To be fair enough, when we did order the food was excellent. Lots of choice, spicy and flavour some and the Kingfisher on tap went down nicely. I don't think I'd visit again - more likely to use as a take out.

Odd enough the tamarind sauce that I have tried here from the grocers ( Morrison's ) was a bit vinegary. Perhaps that's how it is made here. I also had tried the Chicken Tikka Masala. That was also different here in the England. It seems it is made with a sweet sauce. I've tried several Indian restaurants and the Tikka Masala sauce all seem to be based on a sweet sauce. In America it's not sweet. It has a tomato, green pepper, basil and cream flavor. The Garlic Naan was alight. I would had preferred it to be more warm and crispier. The service was good. So was the ambiance. Because the food here is differently prepared from what I am used to, I think a fair rating would be 3 out of 5 based on service, ambiance and portions. During our meal, a waiter accidentally dropped a dish of hot curry onto our table and over me. The curry was extremely hot, ruined my top (£22.99), and left me feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable in the middle of the restaurant. We also had to move tables while covered in curry, which was far from an enjoyable dining experience. What was most disappointing was how the situation was handled. At the end of the meal, we were told £15 had been taken off the bill. After checking the receipt, we realised this was simply the removal of the optional service charge rather than any genuine gesture of goodwill or compensation for the damage caused. We had intended to leave a cash tip before the incident, so this was not meaningful compensation. The food itself was only average, but the lack of customer care after such an incident was the biggest issue. I contacted the restaurant privately the following day and then sent a follow-up email after receiving no response. Despite giving them the opportunity to resolve the matter directly, they chose not to acknowledge or respond to my complaint. Accidents can happen, and I appreciate that nobody intentionally drops food on a customer. However, how a business responds afterwards is what really matters. Unfortunately, in this case, both the handling of the incident and the complete lack of communication afterwards have left me extremely disappointed. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant based on our experience.

We started with papadum and relish tray, and a couple of Kingfishers (on draft). For the table we ordered pillau rice, naan (2 kinds, but can't remember which 2), and saag paneer. I chose the Hozor Ki Pasandwalla Murghi because I wanted to try to pronounce it, and it's one of Oli's favorites. It's thinner sauce with nice heat and a good amount of peppers, onions, and tomatoes. He chose the Chicken Laknavi, and Jane chose the Chicken Pasanda. Everything was nicely spiced - heat but still flavor. Portions were generous - we probably only needed half as much, but we couldn't resist all the flavors. We were treated to a drink afterwards with our bill, and Bailey's was a perfect digestif with the chocolate. On our way out, we were given a 2019 calendar as a holiday present. I'm looking forward to another delicious and friendly meal when I'm back in Oxford!
