In my tour of all my sister-in-law's favorite places, Majliss was the first stop. Not only is the food delicious but the people are so friendly and welcoming! I let Jane and Oli do most of the ordering, since they are regulars and not everything translates into American English and English English the same way. We started with papadum and relish tray, and a couple of Kingfishers (on draft). For the table we ordered pillau rice, naan (2 kinds, but can't remember which 2), and saag paneer. I chose the Hozor Ki Pasandwalla Murghi because I wanted to try to pronounce it, and it's one of Oli's favorites. It's thinner sauce with nice heat and a good amount of peppers, onions, and tomatoes. He chose the Chicken Laknavi, and Jane chose the Chicken Pasanda. Everything was nicely spiced - heat but still flavor. Portions were generous - we probably only needed half as much, but we couldn't resist all the flavors. We were treated to a drink afterwards with our bill, and Bailey's was a perfect digestif with the chocolate. On our way out, we were given a 2019 calendar as a holiday present. Hands down the best Indian food in Oxford. I normally do enjoy Indian food but I wouldn't suggest going for a curry myself. It's the kind of thing that I wouldn't mind having because it's tasty, but is not my favorite kind of food. This restaurant has changed all of that. In fact, it might have changed my life. I had several people whose tastebuds I trust completely recommend this restaurant but I never had the chance to try it out during my time in Oxford. Of course, as soon as I moved to London and had a free weekend I decided it was time to see what the fuss was all about. The website promises a no frills dining experience, without the often cheesy plush carpets and red decor. And it delivers. The walls are white with nothing but the lights dancing across them. There are only a few fern like plants. And the food is to die for. I literally have never had a better curry. Or anything better in mouth at all, in fact. I had a delicious Lamb Kodu which was super tender and spiced to perfection. The naan was moist and soft and just incredible all around. While we waited for our food, they brought out platter after platter of sizzling meat and vegetables for the table next to us. And the grill both looked and smelled like heaven. It was oozing its juices as they pried it from the heavy pan and onto the plate. As our stomachs grumbled, we almost had regrets about not getting it ourselves. In case this place wasn't cool enough, they have a clandestine menu. Yep, that's right. One that isn't posted online and cannot be ordered to take-away. It's composed of the chef's specials about which one cannot speak highly enough. There is this gorgeous strawberry honeyed duck. And the Bengal chicken. Oh... the Bengal chicken. Certainly not one for a person lacking a sweet tooth. A nutty delight cooked in sweet cream and spices until perfection. After about half of it, you do need a bit of a kick so be sure to share with others! But overall, one of the most ingenious dishes ever. Just be sure to brush well afterwards. As for the service. Impeccable, as well. They opened the door for us as we were leaving and before they knew whether we had tipped. Which of course we did. They really do make you feel like royalty here, with the moist, individually wrapped towels and the unwavering attention. Perfection, all around. read more

I enjoy Indian food, but I rarely get to enjoy an above-mediocre Indian meal. Majliss cropped up when I was living just on Tyndale Road (conveniently situated 2 minutes from any of Nandos, the Italian deli, Atomic Burger and the Oxford Blue) and one lazy evening, I decided to give it a go. The interior is somewhat...bizarre. The website opens with "'Good-bye' to plush carpets, red flock wallpaper, and musak...'hello' to minimalist light modern decor...". I can't say I was a big fan of the bright bright white walls, alternating black and white chairs or the soft-hued pink-and-blue lighting by the half frosted windows (having since been into Bar Vanilla in London which feels like a rave at an asylum, Majliss isn't that bad). I was really pleasantly surprised by the food. My lamb pathia (one of my primary yardsticks for curry house comparison) was very well-spiced and flavourful; the naan was good too. I was never disappointed by meals there, although I never did get to explore the menu more extensively. They also do a range of secret recipe "Majliss Marvels" which aren't published (due to curry industry espionage. Or something), which I never got the chance to try. All in all, with prices very much in the standard range for curry, it was definitely my favourite place in town and I very much hope they've maintained the standard in the 18 months since I moved to London. read more

Went to this new restaurant last night and was very impressed. Food was prompt and excellent, and the service was very attentive and they were happy to adapt to my dietary needs by cooking without butter. I had a sobzi biriani, which was very good quality. I also had a tarka daal on the side and it was the best daal I've found in Oxford. I'm a bit obsessed with daal so that made me happy! My companions enjoyed the meat dishes very much, including two that are on a special menu only available if you eat in, so that is very much reccomended. They write in their menu that they are trying to break away from the stereotypical Indian restaurant style with dark red carpets and gilded wall panels, and they certainly manage - the place looks sleek and modern and would be an excellent place to take a party. Indeed, there was a birthday party in when we went who seemed to be having a great time, and a large birthday cake emerged when we were eating our starters! Their dessert menu is limited to ice cream but they claimed they could obtain us indian sweets if we gave them a couple of days notice (a sentiment common among indian restaurants in oxford, but unfortunately requiring less spontaneity than myself and my friends generally have!) We didn't have dessert and quite honestly who would bother eating ice cream in a restaurant which is right by G&Ds? The obvious answer is no one. Get your main meal and Majliss, then head to G&Ds for your pudding. Overall, though I was very impressed, and I guess no one goes to a curry place for the desserts anyway! read more

Went to Majliss for the third time recently. Still impressed. Probably 4.5 stars, but one guy wasn't so keen on his meal. Excellent service. We turned up unbooked at 7.45 on a Friday, and it was packed, but they fitted us in somehow with little fuss. In spite of it being packed we were delivered beer and popadoms quickly, with some decent pickles, though a little more of each would be good. Staff were attentive but not pushing us along. Menu is interesting and reasonable. Decor is refreshingly modern for a Bangladeshi restaurant, and that modern look extends to the food, which is attractively presented. The dishes were a good size and tasty, although the enormous king prawns were a little chewy and tasteless. Less size, more quality would help. Nonetheless, tasty sauces, and a very enjoyable meal. Fish dish was excellent. Mushroom rice and naans fresh and tasty. I will return. read more

Incredible food. Kodu chicken with pumpkin may be the best thing I've ever eaten. Also, try the stuffed capsicum. Wow. What a great start to the meal. When we couldn't find exactly the lamb dish we wanted, the maître d had the chef put together something to our liking. He also recommended a coconut chicken dish for our son, which he loved. Ate here on the recommendation of a much-respected son-in-law and having made several repeat visits wouldn't bother again. There are better Indian restaurants around, although the Cowley Road used to be better, and could stand to have a new place offering really good Indian food. read more

Lovely food and service but very overpriced and offered popadoms while we waited but was then charged £8 for them assuming they were complimentary like you get prawn crackers from the chinese! And they gave us more than we ordered and didnt understand while we wastrying to say we didnt want it so boxed it us up to take home so we had to still pay for it £140 later read more

the best Indian resturant in Oxford . Even has ' dosas' which I think is a first on Cowley Rd . The mixed starter is massive and has plenty for everyone . Really friendly staff , welll worth a visit read more
