I'm new to the area and went there to find a primary care physician. I saw a nurse practitioner who immediately told me she would refer me to a psychiatrist because of an anti-anxiety medicine I used to help me sleep. I was so put off I couldn't believe that her approach was not Pro more and ask me more about myself And I take the anti-anxiety medicine. Furthermore, I was referred for a mammogram and I need diagnostic (which was not even asked of me! Seriously!!) I went to get the mammogram and didn't even hear results that day-and still haven't received them!! And this was back in March. I would not recommend!! I now go to UNC family medicine in Apex, and have an amazing primary care physician. One that actually talks to you and listens to you! read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Musselman for decades. This new location/practice management has been rough around the edges, but is starting to even out. There is still an over-reliance on paper - I've yet to visit when I'm not handed a paper at entrance and exit. The describe works well, usually I get a notice that my prescriptions are ready before leaving. This visit I worked with Kianna and Kimberly. I felt very valued as a patient and cared for as a person. Kianna took all the vitals in a friendly and professional manner, but wasn't against chatting while doing so. Kimberly, the PA, was engaging, concerned, and highly informative. I tend to go in for info overload, and she supplied tons of facts, suggestions on care, and a great care plan for going forward. Also was very concerned that an existing patient cannot enter a new issue on the patient portal. I now know what I need to do for managing this condition. These folks are why I'm still driving back to Cary 15 years after relocating to Durham! read more

The experience with the Clinic and with the doctor was terrible. We came due to our kid's sick - high temperature, cough and other 3 family members being sick with pneumonia. However the doctor said out son "can have something else rather than virus pneumonia" and send us home with no ANY recommendations or treatment. For the visit they said they want $150 - what a surprise when invoice arrived it was $250! For nothing, for no help! We had to visit another doctor at other Clinic who immediately prescribed antibiotics and who said this type of pneumonia is only treated with antibiotics . Think twice before going to Avance Care (we were at Avance Care Cary) and never try to get help from Dr Jaime Pedraza. read more

They advertise appointments available in Cary. I made an appointment because I need my Diabetes meds refilled. I show up early for my appointment and they tell me my appointment was canceled and they are not taking new appointments. Excellent care, welcoming employees, and a variety of services available. I love being able to visit one place and get everything I need done whether it be a sick visit, physical, mole removal, vaccination, pap smear, etc. Appointments are easy to schedule over the phone or online. Plus it is easy to communicate with your provider, request refills, and view tests results in the online portal. I have received care at Avance Care for years at various locations. Each location has great staff who provide clear communication. Main two issues I have is that even though their hours are listed as 7:30 am- 7 pm on weekdays, if you arrive after 5 pm there is an after hours charge of $50. Sometimes this is covered by insurance but not always. I was not informed of this when scheduling the visit. I did learn of this charge when filling out the pre-appointment paperwork. The other issue I have is that the front desk attendants, although they are welcoming and helpful, talk loudly. This becomes an issue when they loudly mention why you are coming in for a visit and inadvertently share private information with the entire waiting room. From my experience, this mainly occurred at the Cary location. Nonetheless, I appreciate the care I received at Avance Care and recommend this primary care to others. I rarely give 5 stars to any business/service, but Avance Cary has earned it. I've been seeing Dr. Catchings since around 2011 when she was at a different practice down the road. I felt comfortable with her from the start so of course I followed her to her new practice. She is always kind and patient, and has gotten to know me (asks about hobbies I'm into, family, etc.) which goes a long way and makes me feel like she's not just rushing me through. I have past trauma history and Dr. Catchings has been open to hearing from me and being flexible with procedures to make things easier. This is so important for those with PTSD! She listens when I break out my list of issues at my yearly physical! The office staff have always been friendly, from those at the front to all the nurses. My messages are returned quickly and they're eager to help. One of the lead nurses, Kat, who I felt safe with, even came in and held my hand during a procedure to help ease some anxiety. We had to pay $281.35 after our insurance adjusted as it was appled to deductible. If you want to require a payment, then just say you require $X. There's no need to ask me if I'm aware I have a balance from 2 weeks ago. This is coming from someone who ALWAYS pays on time when my statements arrive. Just received a text message stating they would be sending my account to collections 3 days after due date on mailed invoice despite having paid in full 3 days before due date. It seems like they have a cash flow problem to be harassing their patients for money in this manner. read more

The office and staff have been great thus far but communication is severely lacking. I came in for a COVID test Wednesday and was assured I would have results in 2-4 days. The RN who took my test told me I would hear back Friday or Saturday at the latest. I called in yesterday and was told it might be Sunday or Monday. I was also told that I could call in today to check on the status of my results. The office is in fact closed. The lack of empathy, understanding for kids on the spectrum and their unique needs is sad. I think there is a lot of improvement that can be made: Here are some examples yes, I need to sit in the car until you call me because my child is freaking out yes I need to talk with the doctor first without the child, because overhearing the conversation will trigger panic yes, if you are going to draw blood please get the tubes ready then call the child in -otherwise the child stresses unnecessarily. I have been a patient at Avance Care in Cary since 2015. I have been amazed at the quality of care received from this facility. My primary physician is Dr. Teneisha Davis. Dr. Davis cares about her patients and is highly knowledgeable and educated; every medical need that I have experienced has been fulfilled under her care. She takes the time to talk to you about your current situation and needs. I am also a patient of Jeanie Chang, Marriage and Family Therapist who has been instrumental in improving my overall well being, personally, and in my marriage. There are not long waits when you arrive for your appointment. This location is efficient with time, but your visit does not seem rushed. It is very easy to schedule an appointment at this location and there has not been a time where I could not get in when needed. If Dr. Davis was not available, there was always another specialist I could see in a timely manner. I have had a decent experience with the front desk staff. They are fairly friendly and courteous. I've been a patient of Ms. Catchings of Avance Care in Cary for almost 25 years. The level of care I receive through Ms. Catchings at Avance Care of Cary is unmatchable and I highly recommend her and her fellow practitioners for anyone in search of a primary doctor. It can be scary going to the doctor when you're a child. I remember my first appointment with her when I was around 8 years old. She made me feel comfortable, laugh, and actually look forward to my doctor appointments when I was young. Ms. Catchings always listens to her patients, answers all your questions, gives you options, and isn't in a rush to get out of the exam room. I continued to see her for all my checkups as I grew up. Fast forward to me becoming a mom, it made perfect sense for Ms. Catchings to be my children's primary physician as well. The level of care my children and I receive at Avance Care of Cary and their practitioners is unmatched. We love the weekend and evening hours for when we need flexible appointments. We've also never had to wait longer than 10 minutes in the waiting room. Anyone with children knows how important it is to have quick wait times! The receptionists are informative, have excellent customer service, and always answer the phone. They're always able to give me a same day appointment when I, or my children, are sick. My most recent experience with Avance Care is with my newborn. He needed a prescription for a bad breakout of baby acne and Ms. Catchings was able to get a sample of it for him to try within 24 hours! My daughters used the West Cary office for three years. The pediatricians were quite good, but anything that requires the administrative side - referrals, billing or health records management - is so completely messed up that the quality of the doctor no longer matters. They are unresponsive and disorganized, and the website and patient portal get changed so often that the people working there are no longer familiar with it. read more

I met Susan Catchings in 1995 when she was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Kaiser Permanente NC. When Kaiser left we followed her through three practices. When she became a family nurse practitioner I became a patient. When I lived in WV I still came here. Now I'm in Western North Carolina and I still come here. I have been a patient of Dr. Catchings since I was in middle school. As became older she continued to be my primary physician. She is someone who advocates for her patients. She makes every patient feel special and not just a number. She takes time with her patients to ensure they do not feel rushed. When I battled infertility she would check on me throughout my journey. Once we successfully graduated from our IVF clinic and were seeing OBGYN she would still check in. She cares about the whole patient not just when you are sick. She never judges her patients. I'm not thankful to have the opportunity to bring my daughter to her practice. She is a life long learner and constantly looking at new medicine so she can be the best doctor for all of her patients. Find a family physician that is there during your times of challenge as well as there to celebrate your successes. Nice staff at this location, and they were helpful. The place itself wasn't my problem. My problem is with their billing department. They never charged my insurance correctly and I had to step in after ever visit to have my co-pay charged correctly. If I didn't they would charge me double as if I was seeing a specialist. I was seeing a PA for general care. Everytime they would blame my insurance, and my insurance would blame them. Then one time clearing this up took too long and they sent my bill to collections. After it's at collections, the insurance fixes the issue and they get paid, but the collections claim remains. Now my credit is impacted and someone is trying to collect on a false claim. This is horrible business. The fact I had this problem over and over again is bad, but that they sent it to collections and won't correct it? Horrible. I fear I will be disputing this for years, all because of a $25 co-pay they charged incorrectly to begin with. read more

Please, AVOID! Never had a worse experience!! I'm still at square one with my health after a year of "care." If you are looking for somewhere to go for a cold, great. BUT if you are looking for a continuation of care avoid like the plague! Dr. Davis although very nice, is unfortunately a horrible md. I have had blood tests for the wrong thing, visits that were coded incorrectly, visits that she didn't have access to my records, all of which lead to what? More visits!! ($$$$) I can ONLY ascertain that she tries to get you in for as many visits as humanly possible, thus making more money. I suggested a medication that had helped me years ago, and she vehemently insisted that she wouldn't prescribe it as needed, but instead prescribed something I had to take DAILY ($$$$). When I had severe reaction to it, I was told to continue taking it. I was not allowed to change my medication until I finally (almost 2 weeks later) got to speak to the practice manager (who was very nice and understanding), they instead gave me a medication that was NOT EVEN FOR the AILMENT I CAME TO SEE HER FOR!!! It's laughable really. I've spent hundreds now, and I have to start all over at a new practice!! Please, just avoid!! read more

I would like to give this place 0 stars but Yelp won't let me. Recently I made an appointment for pain in my kidney area, pain in my lower abdominal area, loss of appetite, and a few other digestion-related issues. On the other hand I have severe anxiety, PTSD, a panic disorder, and depression. Upon entering the examination room I was asked if I was taking the medication prescribed (which I was not because I don't like medication. I like natural remedies and routes). I informed them I wasn't. I was prescribed Zoloft, ativan, and atarax for my anxiety, but the way ativan and atarax makes me feel is awful. Instead of calming me down it makes my anxiety increase AND calms me down at the same time. It's confusing and uncomfortable and I'd rather experience my normal anxiety attacks than be in that state since I fought sleep for FIVE HOURS on these sedatives. Immediately Dr. Davis assumes it's my anxiety and depression so I'm handed their stupid behavioral assessments. I have what my psychologist calls "angry tears", so I was beyond furious that they're automatically assuming anxiety and depression for my appetite loss. I filled it out based on my current very angry and upset mood, and low and behold when Dr. Davis comes in I get a lecture about how I should be taking Zoloft. I do not like being lectured about MY RIGHT TO REFUSE MEDICAL TREATMENT, so this made me further upset to the point where I couldn't give her clear answers since I was crying. Their therapist, Jeanie, who OBVIOUSLY doesn't know how to handle someone with depression and anxiety gives me two options: Take the Zoloft NOW, or be admitted to a psychiatric ward. This made me further upset since they KNEW from day one I have a legitimate fear and dislike of medication. My cousin DIED taking prescribed medication because his doctor wrote a dosage that was too high! They DID NOT discuss the decision to admit me involuntarily to a psychiatric ward with my boyfriend (whom is an emergency contact and someone who CAN make medical decisions for me if they believe I am unstable). Of course when cops show up to take me this only triggers my panic attacks and whatnot. They said that they cannot take me so I walked out! They DO NOT know how to treat someone with issues like mine, nor do they know how to treat someone who is in the LGBTQ+ community such as myself. They sent in paperwork to magistrates office for forced treatment and the notes I have read in my visit report are highly exaggerated. I was SCREAMING?! No! I was having a hard time breathing BECAUSE of the panic attack they induced for threatening to admit me to a psychiatric ward against my will all because I was uncomfortable with putting medication in my body! It's called consent! Dr. Davis isn't the one who has to live with side-effects. Jeanie doesn't have to live with side effects. I DO! That is WHY I have the RIGHT to REFUSE medication and treatment! They KNEW I was seeing a psychologist and undergoing natural remedies and talk therapy, they KNEW to begin with I had a dislike of medication, yet they acted like this was a new fear that developed?! BULLSHIT! I saw my psychologist later in the day and she said that based off of what she can see from me and my state of mind, I was a little distressed but nothing that she couldn't work with and nothing that seemed like I was a threat to myself or others. She calmed me down right away and was able to provide the talk therapy I'm comfortable with. She is a HELL of a lot more reliable than Dr. Davis and Jeanie have ever proven to be since she can work with my schedule and doesn't cancel appointments with me 3-4 times in less than a month. A quote from Dr. Davis "Your anxiety and depression have become worse." NO FUCKING SHIT! You CANCELED on me MULTIPLE TIMES when I NEEDED you! You didn't even give me a chance to tell you how I had been taken to the ER and discovered that I did have THREE other physical conditions along with a deficiency in POTASSIUM which can be DEADLY. You didn't give me a chance to tell you about my digestion issues and pain! You didn't even ASK if I was on any OTC medication or supplements, which I was on 5-HTP! Mix that with Zoloft and you'll likely get serotonin syndrome which can LEAD TO DEATH! I only discovered this LATER! How am I supposed to know this WITHOUT my doctor asking?! She KNEW I was seeking natural supplements and talk therapy, so there was a HIGH chance that I was taking 5-HTP yet she never asked?! This practice is DANGEROUS and probably borderline MALPRACTICE. Not only could she have killed me this way, but she also violated my rights and left my pain untreated, which can POSSIBLY be kidney failure or something else serious! DO NOT GO HERE! Very unsafe and they make you feel like you can't make your own decisions! I obviously need a D.O. Someone who is more open minded to a holistic approach rather than being prescription and drug happy! read more

Avance Care is WONDERFUL!!! Dr. Godfrey is my primary care physician, and she is AMAZING!!! She always takes such good care of everything. With my chronic conditions, things can happen fast and be complicated. Recently, I had to contact the office when this happened, and Dr. Godfrey was unfortunately not working that day, but the nurse immediately looked at my situation and realized it needed to be taken care of as soon as possible. In just a couple of hours, I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner, Stephanie Lynch, and she was phenomenal! She had access to my medical history and conditions, and very quickly realized the situation and started taking care of things. It was wonderful!!! When you have serious chronic conditions like mine, it is invaluable to have such an amazing doctor like Dr. Godfrey and be able to go to the same office for urgent care type situations where the whole team works together for the care of the patient. I have had and have many specialist doctors and have been to all the major medical facilities. The standard of care at this facility is far and above anything I have encountered in my 39 years of dealing with my conditions. I love Avance Care! And I recommend it to everyone I see. I am ecstatic about the extended hours 7am-7pm....alleviating me from having to use Urgent Care after hours, and there are hours on Saturdays too! I am struggling to understand how this practice looks so good "on paper" (their website and marketing materials), and yet the in-person patient experience can be so bad. I've had two annual physicals at Avance care now (believing in second chances), sadly with the same poor experience. First, "convenience" is emphasized all over the website. Yet, an annual physical exam, quite inconveniently, requires two visits - one for labs and a second for the actual exam. My previous, less "convenient" provider (in fact, every previous doctor I've had), had always been able to accomplish these two tasks in one convenient visit: Draw blood, perform physical exam, follow-up phone call if there's anything to talk about in the lab results. The second thing that throws me is the word "comprehensive" used to describe the physical exam. I've never had a LESS comprehensive than the two I experienced at two different locations. And this includes one-off "employment" physicals by providers I'd never see again, let alone one that is supposed to be my "partner" in maintaining my overall long-term health. Each exam (seemingly cookie-cutter in how identical they were), consisted of: shining a light in my ears and mouth, listening to my heart and lungs (which was done over my shirt - more on this later), asking (not looking) if I am having any abdominal problems and having me push and pull against the provider's hands with my hands, arms and legs. 5-minutes, maximum, and that's being generous. Along with the first exam, my bloodwork revealed a minor issue that the NP suggested an over-the-counter supplement for. The next day, a medical assistant called to say the NP had decided an Rx would be a better approach, and called it in to my pharmacy. About 2-weeks after that, the NP called with a "courtesy follow up" to ask if I'd been able to find the OTC supplement she recommended, and seemed surprised when I told her about the call from the assistant suggesting it be an Rx (supposedly ordered by her) instead. This year, the discussion of my completed lab work (at the second location) led to this NP suggesting that a few additional tests be run, because of last year's identification of this same issue. So -- my chart showed that (a) there was an abnormality in last year's blood work, (b) I was taking a supplement (or maybe an Rx) to address it, and still this year's lab order didn't include the test to measure for this. Did anyone read my chart before ordering the labs or setting this appointment? From the Avance Care website, FAQ page (https://www.avancecare.com/for-patients/faqs/): Q) Do you perform skin checks and do skin biopsies? A) Yes. Typically, a total body skin check is part of your comprehensive medical exam. If we detect a worrisome skin lesion or mole, we will often recommend a skin biopsy. We routinely perform these skin biopsies in our office. Back to that comprehensive medical exam... Over the years, I've had multiple 'abnormal' moles removed (this fact was mentioned in the "patient history" (electronic) paperwork I completed). While I do see a dermatologist for annual skin exams, I intentionally see a primary care doctor 6-months in-between (effectively, to get two skin exams each year, since my insurance only covers one). It's hard to do a total body skin exam when only the face, neck and arms (elbows down) are exposed. To my point earlier, these have also been the only two physical exams I can ever recall having where, at the very least, I wasn't even asked to remove my shirt. So, a TBSE is supposed to be part of a 'typical' comprehensive exam, and my history specifically mentions previous abnormal moles, and no skin exam was performed, even though it's supposedly typically done during the CPE. Needless to say, neither was a genital exam, hernia, or testicular cancer screening (and, reviewing my visit summary online mentions "testicular self exam was discussed with patient" - it was not.) I'm sure many patients would feel "relieved" that their annual physical was so easy. Most men don't like to be examined by any doctor. I'm sure some would be entirely uncomfortable with a young lady NP. "Getting away easy" by not even having to remove their shirt, let alone "turn and cough" might be perfect for some. I was asked when I made the appointment, if I had a provider preference, and could have easily requested a male provider if it would have been an issue for me to be seen by a female. I don't know if this was part of the reason for the lack of "thoroughness" (I'd like to think not). Personally, as someone who's already had moles removed (one from a pretty "private" place) and family members who have experienced several forms of cancers and various other issues that a TRUE comprehensive physical exam uncovered, 30-seconds of embarrassment to identify something that could potentially shorten my life is a fair price to pay, and the primary reason why I will not be returning to this practice. read more
