We recently had our kitchen remodeled and after having our granite counter tops installed we went to Avalon to select tile for our back splash. We were pleased with the knowledgable sales person and found tile and a style that we wanted. The day of the install came and during the process we had some issues, installer was very nice, but maybe a little over his head because of the pattern we had selected. After the job was completed, we were not satisfied. I called Avalon and they sent out their estimator who immediately picked out the irregularities and the Manager came out a few days later for a second opinion. I didnt have to yell, raise my voice or threaten anything. Avalon said they would make it right and they did. They ordered new tile, and because of the strength of their tile adhesive they had to tear out the bad tile along with the drywall down to the studs. The second install was done by Sean who did a great job! Avalon stands behind their products and installs. We have a small kitchen, so we needed a small amount of tiles for our backsplash. Came here because we knew that the selection was large, and that was confirmed when we walked in. Prepare to spend a few hours here if you're picky, because we wanted a tile that was beyond a (yawn) standard subway tile. Contractor had already called them with our measurements so that when we finally chose our mosaic tile, on our second visit, we completed the sale. However, the tiles weren't in stock and had to be special ordered. When it came time to choose the pencils, we had no clue as to what would complete the look, so sales person, from the key ring of samples under the counter, suggested white, and we agreed based upon his recommendation. Instead of them calling us about their receipt of our order, we had to call them to be told our order had arrived (strike one). Contractor installed tiles and they're beautiful. However, pencils were too stark (strike two) and were our focal point when we entered kitchen. Looked like pencils were giving us the finger every time. So contractor made different suggestion, found different pencils elsewhere (at additional cost), and they blend much better. Found that our basic white pencils were special ordered too and cannot be returned (strike three). In conclusion, they've got huge inventory but know exactly what you want before you enter. Do your homework beforehand and remember that this is strictly a retail store and not a design center, so a recommendation is strictly an opinion and nothing more. If you need six basic white pencils, have I got a deal for you! read more

Great selection of tile and flooring but customer service is pathetic. Our job was totally mishandled from the beginning. Initial estimate was reasonable but then after estimator came to measure it was more than doubled in price. Scaffolding and mesh patching and multiple workers would be involved. Turned out it was one very capable tile installer and a ladder that accomplished a job well done. Three small pieces of mesh patching was required and that cost had been listed at a $500 upcharge. The labor costs were never adjusted until we asked for an adjustment. The scaffolding cost was removed (as it should have been) and we were issued a credit of $200 on the upcharge for the mesh only after much discussion and explaining our reasons for protesting these charges. We were loyal customers for 13 years but not any more. Buyer beware! read more

Just had a beautiful wood floor installed in my new house . We picked Avalon flooring because we had such a great experience working with Tim Brown in our previous home. Not only did Tim deliver what he promised in our other house but he came through above and beyond again at this house too. We were on a very tight schedule and Tim promised the job would get done . Not only did he come through for us but Tim actually got out the knee pads and helped the guys finish so we could move in on time !! Can't thank him enough !! We re did our kitchen in May and went to Avalon for flooring advice. We were told to buy the Mohawk luxury vinyl tile as it was our best fit. We also purchased the underlayment as Avalon suggested. The floor was installed and has dents and spaces as we have been trying to contact John Harris who was VERY responsive before we made the purchase but no longer answers our emails or phone calls. I am in the process of renovating my kitchen and went into this establishment and was greeted cheerfully by Justin Bousquet. He had the nicest personality and was so helpful to me. I explained that this was new to me and he showed me options and explained how the installation of backsplash worked, which again I had no idea about. Justin is the most pleasant person and one of many that I have met in this quest for a new kitchen. I asked about window treatments and he was so accommodating and introduced me to some very nice products. Justin made it painless and took the fear out of this experience. I would definitely recommend this company for their flooring, tile needs, etc. I would like also add that all of the staff that I met were as friendly as Justin. We ordered a custom rug from Avalon one of many we had purchased before without any problems. It was ready for pick up but the salesperson told us to check the carpet because he saw that the packaging was torn and there was a stain on the carpet. The manager came to see the damage and said it would be cleaned and to come back in a couple of days. When we returned the carpet was still stained and when I refused to purchase a stained and dirty carpet the manager was rude and nasty. First he tried to negotiate another price for the carpet and when we did not agree he refunded my money and told me never to come back to his store. Wow! We have done business with Avalon for years and we will never do business with them again. read more

Messed up our order and when I called to get things straightened out the sales lady was not there. I asked for a manager and neither manager at the wilmington store was available. The associate passed me off to the installation manager who never contacted me. I finally tracked her down a half hour later and realized she had no idea what happened. The men who were installing finally figured out what was wrong and now I wait a week to get what I ordered. Now I realize why you pay 90% up front. Never again! Well the back splash in my kitchen was completed on Monday. Lou the installer and his helper were fantastic. He went above and beyond to get the job done in one day because of the impending storm on Tuesday. He was at our house all day to get the job done. All I can say is that my wife and I were truly blown away by this young craftsman. The job he did was amazing. Everyone that has seen this job is in awe. My hat goes off to Avalon Flooring in Delaware. I am the first to complain if something is not right but also feel that when something is done well you need to tell the positive. First sales man at a tile place should be able to calculate how many cases of tile you would need to complete a job when given the square footage. I still purchased an extra case and we ran out. The next sales man was asked if the grout had a sealant in it or would it need to be sealed upon completion. We were told there was a sealant in the grout. No there isnt. We now have to clean the grout and seal it. My opinion is that they are car salesman in a tile shop. read more

Had a floor installed a few years ago. The finish on a few boards started to blister. Called said they would send someone out. He got here and asked if I had any of the flooring. The product had been discontinued(I found out after he had done the job). The job wasn't done very good, called and asked if they could come back and redo it. They said they would call us back, never happened(called several times). Sent a complaint to BBB, they finally contacted us and said there isn't anything else we can do for you. Good way to run a business, I think not. I will not use this company again. read more

We wanted custom granite tile for a fireplace. We tried a few other tile places first that tried to sell us their stock, even going so far as to tell me the tile I wanted was no longer available (I knew it was). Avalon was the only place that listened to what I wanted and ordered it for me. Sales staff is great - very knowledgeable and friendly. Their prices are about the same as other places, but their huge selection makes them the best option. We're redoing all the floors in our house and purchase from Avalon again. A quick comment re: another review - measuring your area accurately and adding in a waste factor is important to the amount of tile you purchase. Add in 10% - 15% waste because some tiles will break during shipping, there will be errors cutting tile - it's just part of buying and installing tile. read more

I had a great experience with Avalon and highly recommend! Not only did they have a huge selection but the service was fantastic! Tim Brown was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable throughout the process. He educated me on the different types of flooring as I wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go in. I purchased their home brand hand scraped hardwood - what a mistake. The product says that pieces are up to 54 inches long but no piece in my house is more than 36 inches. The bigger problem is that the wood has significant splintering. Walking in your socks will pull up pieces of the wood and cause up to a 3 inch visible splinter by pulling off the finished wood. I purchased wall-to-wall carpet for my new home in NJ at this location. I was very happy with the customer service I received here. The salesperson was very low pressure, let me choose what I wanted at my own pace, and followed up several times to make sure everything was on track. They were even able to coordinate with the Avalon Flooring store in New Jersey to get the measurements done. The only big surprise was the 90% down up front policy which is really outrageous. We had a TERRIBLE experience with Avalon Flooring in Wilmington, DE. We did have a good time selecting our tile due to their big selection they have in their show room. However, it felt as though as soon as they saw that we were committed to the sale/using them, things went down hill. The floor salesman seemed knowledgeable about the tile selection, but as soon as we wanted to schedule an estimate he did not return our phone calls. We called 5 times (starting at 10am) in one day and kept getting "He will call you as soon as he is done with a customer" or "He will call you in ten minutes", after giving up...we didn't hear back from him until 5pm. Next we had to work with the estimator...we had a scheduled estimation on a Thursday and he called 2 hours before to say he needed to reschedule for Saturday. We did have to rearrange our day, but we understood (seeing as though things do happen). When Saturday came, he (not once apologizing for having to reschedule) measured our kitchen and explained a few things (in a rush) and said they were three weeks out (we assumed this meant three weeks out from the day we schedule the appointment) and we should be hearing from the company to schedule the installation "sooner rather than later", he gave us his cell phone number to call or text in case we had any questions. After 5 days we had to call. An employee explained that one of our tiles were in and they were just waiting for the accent tile and it would be there in about 7-10 days. We asked if we could at least schedule the installation, however we were told they need to have the material first before scheduling anything. That same day, we texted the estimator to get some clarification on why we had to wait to schedule the installation, since the tile was ordered and on its way, and we didn't want to wait any longer than we had to since they were already three weeks out on scheduling and we were going on vacation the next month. He replied with "What would you like me to do?" and reiterated what the other employee explained. While we did understand his explanation, it was obvious in the way his original texts were written, that he was not willing to further assist (why give us his phone number then?), however he did explain that they were three weeks out including the time for shipment (which he forgot to elaborate on earlier). Not completely thrilled with the lack of quality communication/explanation, but understanding that companies have their own ways of doing business....we patiently waited. A week later we called again to get an update and spoke with our salesman, he actually told us (unaware that we had spoken with an employee the week before) what day the accent tile was ordered and it turned out that it wasn't even ordered until the day AFTER we spoke with the employee who told us that it was already ordered and would take 7-10 business days. Why was it that the tile wasn't ordered until the day AFTER?! And why would the employee lie about it? However, still, we didn't make a fuss or even mention that to the salesman. After a few more days, the accent tile finally came in and we were able to schedule the installation (which turned out to be more than three weeks past the estimation date, unlike previously promised). On the day of the installation we had a friend stay at the house (since my wife and I were unable to take off), to be there when the installer came to perform the work. After work, we came home to find that the accent tile was the wrong tile! The installer had already completed the work and was in the middle of cleaning up when we told him. We understood that it was not the installer's fault that the wrong accent tile was ordered/installed. However, after calling his manager, we went through our options at this point...and after trying our best to negotiate what we thought we were owed, it came down to one of two options: either we have the installer take out the wrong accent tile, order the CORRECT accent tile, wait for it to come in, schedule another installation for that tile, see if it fits, if it didn't they may have to tear the other tile out, then order more of that, then schedule that to be re-done, etc. OR, they would take $100 off of our final bill and we would keep the wrong tile. At this point, my wife and I agreed that it was not worth it to deal with this company anymore in order to get the tile we originally wanted, so we tried again to get more off of the final bill and the company went down to their lowest agreement of $200 off. All in all, we would never recommend this company to anyone, ever. The installer (who might be an outside contractor), was very nice and did a fantastic job installing the tile...the workmanship is great! However when it comes down to it, because of Avalon Flooring, we are now stuck with the wrong accent tile with only $200 off the final bill. Terrible customer service... read more
