This is always a must stop at when we are in NJ. It was close to my sister in laws house so we'd usually get take out with the family. Recently it moved to a new location that seems bigger. The bagels are great but some can be kinda thick. We took some home to family in VA. Lots of variety. I personally like the omelette but now it comes with a fried hashbrown like from McDonalds instead of home fries. You can pay extra if you want home fries. I've also had French toast and everything bagels with cream cheese. They do use a lot of cream cheese and on another visit I mentioned light cream cheese and light butter but they didn't have a button on the computer for that so there's no way for the bakery counter to know that. There's a selection of coffees, lunch with sandwiches. Lots of options. The inside is decorated with beach wall paintings. My only complaint is it's a little disjointed on that your order does come out together based on the layout. You pick up food from a kitchen window when your name is called or at the smoothie/coffee/bakery counter. Depending on how big your party is, you might have to wait around and check up on it. Unfortunately it was that way at the old location too so I recommend double checking your takeout orders to make sure you have everything. The food is always great so I definitely recommend them for breakfast. There is even an order ahead option online. No outside seating in their new location by shop rite which is kinda a bummer if you want to enjoy dinner weather outside. Multiple locations in the area though. read more

Horrible bagels! Raisin / cinnamon : Zero raisins and zero cinnamon taste must be using a food color to mimic the cinnamon color! Chocolate chip: looked like hockey pucks had 2-3 single chips in them. Formula is horrible and the bakers have no clue how to make and proof them. At 11.00 dollars for 6 bagels wont ever be back. Yet i'd be happy to pay that price if they were good. I think this operation is destined for failure like the Shop Rite location.. I'm sorry to have to be harsh but these were probably the absolute worst bagels I've ever had. They were not fresh and had the taste and consistency of dense balls of undercooked dough. The store itself was also in disarray and the spreads behind the counter looked old to the point where you could see the cream cheese in the display bins had dried out around the sides. I was a long time customer of Avalon coffee but there has been a big change in service and food. My order of a 2 bagel with provolone cheese and taylor pork roll took almost 25 minutes to make and when the order was completed it was two slices of taylor and no cheese. Not worth the price of $7.95. Each with 0.50 up charge because I selected an Asiago flavor bagel. In the past the bagel was 6 slices of taylor pork roll and several slices of cheese. It was a breakfast sandwich you look forward to eating but what I received today leaves a lot to be desired. Sadly I can no longer recommend or enjoy my morning breakfast here. To many corners are being cut and the quality is no longer there. read more

Alright, so.... Avalon Coffee. It's been a minute. I have been to multiple Avalon Coffee locations before. The one in Rio Grande used to be on Route 9, however, the building has since changed hands. I'm also not sure if it is under new ownership. I decided to venture to the new location inside the ShopRite Shopping Center, which, for its location, is very busy. The first thing I noticed is how huge their menu is. One thing that sets this particular Avalon Coffee apart is their large assortment of breakfast items. It appears that you can get lunch here as well. The atmosphere is not too bad overall. To me, it did seem a little bland, and personally I would opt not to but a blinking "Open" sign in front of the building, but for a coffee and breakfast spot, it is not bad at all. I opted for a cup of the Avalon blend with avocado toast, and I was not disappointed. My advice: don't sleep on this place. The outside of the building may look deceiving, and there are a lot of businesses within this small area, but I give high marks for this particular franchise. read more

Tried to get a latte for the girlfriend at Avalon Coffee. Knew something was up when the cashier didn't know what it was. She finished ringing it up and promptly went into the back hall on her phone. Another gentleman came out to try an operate the machine & told me "it was broken and needed a minute to fix." The cashier then took over the process while on her phone, obviously getting instruction on what to do. 20 min later she figured out how to whip the milk. At this point it was obvious that no one in the establishment knew how to operate the machine. Abort. Overpriced coffee is bad enough. Trial and error definitely not what I want this morning. The coffee and bagels here are indeed very good. My dining buddy enjoyed a rye bagel and house-mixed cinnamon walnut cream cheese--there was a LOT of cream cheese on it, but I'd say that's better than too little! One self-serve coffee was empty, so I got myself a different flavor than I intended but it was still good. I didn't bother asking the staff to refill the empty one because they seemed uninterested in engaging with customers unless absolutely necessary--in the interest of being gracious, I'll point out that there clearly weren't enough people to serve the long line (it cut across 3/4 the length of the dining area) that formed a couple of times while we were there. When I reached the front of that line to order and was standing at the counter, I had to wait for staff people to talk to each other for a minute or two before anyone made eye contact or greeted me. Because of that and the overall standoffish demeanor of the staff, I don't plan to return. read more

Always Avalon is my go to for a chicken Waldorf salad on bagel! Not anymore $10 dollars for one sandwich that had just enough salad to cover the bagel some onion then got told (after I paid no lettuce) which made the sandwich WORSE ! There use be enough salad in the bagel that I had use a fork to eat the stuff that fell off. I waited 15 minutes. For one sandwich! I get it short handed but when you turn out sandwiches like the SAD one I had ... I should just went got my money back! Terrible ... Never credited my account when they said they would. Was on vacation and my hotel had this place's "room service" menu as part of some program they now offer. Cool, I thought. I put my breakfast order in at 8am, put in the hotel name and room number as advised. The big perk is they deliver it to your room...."room service", the whole point. Anyway, the platform estimated 20 minutes. At 8:50 I still had no food. I checked my email and it said it was delivered at 8:30! Wasn't outside my door though. I called the restaurant thinking they delivered to wrong room. After confusion, the girl told me it was delivered to the front desk. I told her that her restaurant's platform specifically says to be sure to put in the room number and hotel for delivery to your door. She said they are still training. I said well now my foods cold from sitting in the lobby! She said she would refund me the order, which I appreciated. Welp...refund never came. And the front desk told me that so many orders were being delivered to the front desk without a room number on the bag, so they couldn't even call the guests it belonged to! Never again. While the pastry was fine - the coffee was meh. The floor was slippery (oily), creamer pumps were nearly empty, flies were abundant and the trash was overflowing. This cafe is absolutely disgusting. I have never left a review, but my experience here has prompted me to write my first. We counted at least three air vents, all of which were black and seemingly dripping with mold. There was (what appeared to be) two air conditioning units, each of which were also covered in dirt/mold, and one of them was directly over the coffee beans. The walls also have black "gunk" on them, and we are still unsure what it was. We also noticed that there was mold in the water dispenser, so they put on an "Out of Order" sign. I was genuinely uncomfortable to be inside the restaurant. We plan to contact the health inspector. Bagels are fantastic though. read more

I always love stopping at Avalon when I'm in Rio Grande; their service is always super quick and friendly and everything is always fresh. Their bagels are delicious and I particularly love their veggie cream cheese. I have yet to try any of their lunch sandwiches, but am sure they are just as good as breakfast. To see where the new location was I went in the new place and was very disappointed to see my favorite bagel place had moved. This is the worst place to miss when you're no longer a local- because you'll find yourself driving an hour and a half at the crack of dawn to get a cinnamon raisin bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese. And 6 more bagels for the road....and a large iced coffee (that's perfectly sweet!!) Avalon does an outstanding job every single time I visit, it's the best bagel you'll find in South Jersey and especially at shore points. They've done a great job during the pandemic of implementing distancing and enforcing take-out only options by removing chairs and benches. Please keep up the good work!
