We came here to watch The Devil Wears Prada 2 and loved that we could order food that was actually good and not just the usual movie theater junk. The coolest part was how they would also bring the food directly to your seat even when the movie was playing. It just adds a nice little touch to the experience. The chairs are spacious and very comfortable to sit in and have a little tray that pulls out which makes it nice and easy to enjoy your food or snack without having to worry about putting it on your lap as you eat. However, the coolest part of this place? The ceiling has what looks like a dark sky with stars and every so often a shooting start goes by. It's a cute little theater and the service is always great. I went this weekend for the first time and I was shocked I had never been before. This theater has that old timey feel with all of the modern efforts of a theater today. The inside looks so cool with fun stairs and balconies around. Inside the theater itself is super cool! The ceiling is filled with twinkling stars and even some shooting stars! The theater is super big, it feels like a real theater for plays and such with large aisles and big seats. There were a lot of staff to help so it wasn't to busy or crowded before the show started. I got popcorn and shared some mozzarella sticks with a friend. The popcorn was so buttery and delicious, it was hard to stop eating it! The mozz sticks were super crispy with an amazing cheese pull, and tasty of course. 10/10 would recommend seeing a movie here and enjoying the old timey vibes all around no matter what movie you see! read more

I continue to enjoy going to The Avalon for a movie. Love that you can reserve your seat ahead of time and the QR code for ordering food and beverage. I'm personally a fan of their pizza and chicken tenders if looking for something more substantial while watching a movie. For the traditionalist, their popcorn is amazing. I was here recently for a film festival event. Great atmosphere, as hinted to in the name. The bar is a nice touch as is the food service, which we did not try. The chairs are comfortable and the sliding TV trays are very convenient. The sound though - man, it's bad! This was extremely evident in a program of short films. This place will always be my first choice to go watch a movie! The atmospheric room has lights on the ceiling, giving off a night sky effect. The Back Stage room is hidden in the back & is smaller, but gives off a cozy feel (just like the whole place). I spent every weekend as a kid/teenager at the Avalon. We loved the ushers who walked up and down the aisles with their flashlights telling people to be quiet...usually us kids! I've been going to the Avalon since I was a kid, and now it's even better! This is a beautifully updated old theater. The Atmospheric theater has (newly updated) LED stars on the ceiling! And at Doors Open we were told that it's the exact night sky (somewhere) in Spain. We brought the kids recently for Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" and intend to see "Spirited Away", as the Avalon celebrates Miyazaki March/April, each year. Comfy seats with swinging tray tables, great seating options, online tix purchasing, updated bathrooms, beer, wine, an attached restaurant, great staff, and unique movies in addition to the best in new movies. Have been wanting to try The Avalon Theater for awhile after hearing some great reviews from friends, and it lived up to the hype! The theater it self is a really good mixture of classic and modern. The architecture and overall atmosphere makes you feel like you are in a good old fashion theater. However, the theater also has nice, comfortable seats, trays for food, and a food menu that you can order from the comfort of you seat and without leaving the movie. Tl;dr great popcorn and sparkly ceiling! I always love my time at the Avalon. Being a small business, I always try and support them when I wanna see a flick on the big screen. I will say it does mean they have a somewhat limited variety of movies (as they have two screens) but they are usually always playing the popular choices. When I was most recently there it was the newest Ghostbuster movie (heart warming cameos!) and Gucci (haven't seen it but I've heard good things) The architecture and ornamental features of the main theater are stunning and beautiful. The ceiling is lit up with a "starry display" that has a shooting star every once in a while! The popcorn is always fresh and delicious and perfectly salted - they also have candies and other snacks and alcoholic beverages (woo!) all seats include a nice little swivel table to make your movie watching experience just a little bit easier. I live in the Bayview area and will continue to support this small business for all my movie-watching needs! read more

Went to see Wicked at 6:30. Arrived at 6:20 to a line out the door. Apparently the entry line was feeding directly into the concessions line and keeping people from entering the theatre at all. Once we got to the ticket taker at 6:40, we could clearly see that they had already started the movie. We asked for our money back. How are you going to start the movie when there is still a line out the door because you can't figure out how to separate the entry line from the concessions line? The Avalon Atmospheric Theater is a gorgeous movie palace founded May 1st, 1929! The Avalon and the Oriental are the only remaining movie palaces in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Avalon architect was Russ Williamson who was a former draftsman for famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. There is beatiful Spanish, Moorish, and Mediterranean architectural design. The Avalon Lounge especially has luxurious architectural design. The Bay View Avalon was extensively renovated and reopened in January 2015, after being closed since 2001. The Avalon shows both classic and first run movies. The atmospheric theater has very comfortable seats, fresh concessions, and fresh buttered popcorn. The Avalon Theater is, in a word, charming. Built in 1929, The Avalon was built to make you feel like you're in another world entirely. And, it does. You travel from the hustle and bustle of Kinnickinnic back in time to a theater built during the roaring 20's. The theater is grandiose and iconic. You feel like the full majesty of the movie watching experience there. It makes going out to the theater an event I do wish the kitchen was open past 8pm for shows that start later, however. Additionally, the management seems to prefer Eurocentric customers as they were the only ones thanked for attending while exiting the theater by management (there were only 7 people at this showtime). The Avalon Theater is such a cool place to go! If you buy your tickets you can scan them on your phone as you come in. There are a decent amount of options for refreshments and they can even bring things to your seat. The inside of the theater is very cool with lights on the ceiling to look like stars and other things to make it seem like you are outside. The seats were a little wobbly, but you mostly just noticed right when you sat down. My only complaint is that I was there to see Batman and it was SO loud. I understand action films are going to be a little bit loud, but I was actually wincing at the loud noise, it just seemed slightly excessive. I will start this off by saying that I am completely biased because I do live in Bay View and have been waiting years for the Avalon to reopen. However, let me tell you it was worth the wait! We went on one of the last preview days before it was open to the public. Granted if given my choice I would not have picked the last Hobbit movie but that was what they had available. They were interviewing a lady who was at the original opening in 1929. I thought it was great that they were documenting the history of this great theater. We got there early and were able to sit in the side lounge and order some nachos and beers. The nachos and all the other food they brought out was surprisingly better than I expected. Also, I expected to get taken to the cleaners on prices but I actually thought they were very reasonable. We saw the theater years ago before the renovation started. The amount of work to get the Avalon back to it's original quality was incredible. I love that they moved the bathrooms to the lower level but kept them in a similar style as the original. They kept the place as original as possible but made sure that it was updated with the newest equipment (sound, screen, etc.) The theater is very comfortable and has seats with swing out tables for eating. We didn't eat in the theater but you definitely can get food and drinks during the movie. They have attendants who come by and will take your orders. Next time we will order some food before the movie and stare up at the beautiful stars that adorn the ceiling. read more

I visited the Avalon Theater last night for the first time in at least a decade. It was remodeled within the past year and I haven't had a chance to see the changes made by Ascend Design. The Milwaukee Film Festival is in progress, so I went to see a film that a friend has a role in regarding homelessness in Milwaukee, called "30 Seconds Away: Breaking the Cycle." The film was enlightening, but also confirmed some notions I already had about homelessness. It was a great film, but that's not what this review is about. The theater looks brand new, but with a classic look. There are red curtains and arched walkways and balconies, the whole works. I like how the seats have been changed to big chairs that have trays to hold your food and a cup holder for your drink. I could also recline my back rest a bit. The seats aren't set up in stadium seating, but they are slightly raised over the seat in front and each chair faces the screen, so I didn't have to turn my head, not even a little. They remodeled the ceiling so the stars are more brilliant without distracting from the screen and apparently there are shooting stars, but I did not stare up long enough to see one. The Avalon offers a concession stand, but a server also takes your food and drink orders at your seat, form a menu that includes wine, beer, cocktails and food items, such as house made thin crust pizza, nachos, meatballs marinara, and panini. The screen is huge and the sound system is great. I will definitely be back to see movies in the future! read more

The Avalon Theater is such a gem! We love our local theaters, and Avalon does a great job of showing the latest blockbusters as well as mixing it up with classics and fun throw-backs. Additionally, they are part of the Milwaukee Film Festival theater group, which always earns points for me. The theaters themselves are dine-in ready and the menu is pretty decent. We're big fans of the pizza options. But most of the time we stick with the popcorn and maybe some wine. They also do fun theme cocktails for bigger shows - for instance, with the first Fantastic Beasts film, they had a butterbeer cocktail on special. Their grown-up rootbeer float drink is similar and always a fun sweet treat. The chairs big, can rock a bit, and are equiped with swivel tabels - overall quite comfy. The ceiling in the main theater is one of my favorite features, as it has a starry sky with the occasional shooting star. Such a neat atmosphere! They also have a lounge/bar area, which I've never been to but looks really neat. Some time I will have to carve out the time to come early or stay after to check it out. It seems well-utilized by patrons every time I come in for an evening show. And though it may seem like a small detail, their restrooms are always clean and are nicely updated. The Avalon Theater is a unique and charming movie going experience! If you've never been here, you are in for a treat! The Avalon is Bay View's only example of a "movie palace." And a palace it is! It is nearly 100 years old and was the first theater in Wisconsin to be built for movies with sound. The theater is an example of an atmospheric theater, meaning that it is meant to simulate sitting outside in a courtyard. In the case of the Avalon, it is designed to look like a Mediterranean villa, with large columns, Spanish roof tiles, etc. And the crowning glory is the ceiling, which is made to look like the starry night sky. It's truly a magical experience seeing a film here. The theater has been updated with modern theater amenities, including an excellent sound system and clear movie screen. Each seat in the theater includes a personal mini table and a QR code that you can scan at any point to order food and drinks which will be brought to your seat. Yes, you will spend a bit more money to see a film at the Avalon, but it is SO worth it to help to preserve this special building and ensure it's future for years to come! read more

I had a great movie watching experience here! Cozy seats and restaurant service at your seat in the theatre. I just love the history and architecture of this theatre, you feel as though you've stepped back in time. And in the absolute best way, no dust or must. I've been here before and was really disappointed with the quality of food served in the theatre. So much so I was hesitant to order food here again. Let me tell you, they have fully redeemed themselves. I got a cheeseburger and French fries and this was one of the best burgers that I've ever put in my belly. So good! I keep daydreaming about it. The house special sauce here has a big Mac vibe and I wasn't mad about it. Flavorful, full of moisture, good quality. I would have taken a photo of the food for this review but I was in dark movie theatre and interesting trailers were playing. No can do. Burgers are served a la carte with the option to add a side. I got the fries. They were tasty just a smidgen too salty. Okay, okay. Yeah. I got two margaritas. You should too. They were tasty! And they had me feeling all sorts of margaritaed up. I was humming and dancing after the film. Did I care if anyone saw me? Not one bit. The popcorn here was a little blah. Customer service throughout the theatre was really great! Nice bathrooms too. The restaurant attached, Mistral, is Incredibles! I noticed a dinner and movie promotion on the theatre's website. Something about getting a free movie ticket. I love this theater! Went last night and it felt good to finally get out of the house! EVERYONE that worked there was very nice, polite and welcoming. They did a great job of socially distancing the available seats. They need an updated printout of the floor diagram that shows where the available seats are though. I absolutely loved how easy it was to order food directly from my seat in the theater using my smartphone! And for me that's really saying something! But the food was hit or miss. We ordered a cheese pizza, cheeseburger, french fries and a coffee. The french fries were great! We both really loved the skinny fries. My 15 y/o said the pizza and butterbeer soda was good. The cheeseburger I had was not so good. It was cold in spots and had a strange taste and was served with shredded lettuce. And with eating in the dark you can't really look at it to see what's on it. And the coffee was not good. With Milwaukee having such an abundant variety of coffee providers, you'd think they could pick a better one then Valentines. Or that they would provide a variety of brand options on the menu. Maybe I just had a bad cup, I don't know!? We will still be back though. We really LOVE this local theater. Honey, I'm home! Those were my first words walking into the Avalon when it reopened. I saw The Breakfast Club here when it came out when I was starting high school in the mid-1980s. You could see stuff for $1, or at least that's how I remember it. Sticky floor, my initials scratched into a chair back, and gum under the seats. The remodel brought so many improvements, from super comfy rocking seats with tray tables, to gorgeous bathrooms, and great menu choices. You can get a glass of wine with your popcorn now, or chug beer and stuff cheese curds in your face. I love the Avalon, not only for the old memories, but for the new ones I make every time I come here. The location is great...just a blocks from all the great restaurants in Bay View. My only beef is that you can't reserve a specific seat if you buy tickets in advance and that the cheese curd portions are on the small side. But this is a great place to see a movie! read more

If you want to visit a unique, charming theater on the southern edge of Milwaukee then this should be your first stop. The primary defining feature of this theater is that there is a full service bar right inside, which is perfect to hang out at before your showing, and that's exactly what I did. The entire place, including the bathrooms, was spotlessly clean. It was a theater that reflects what movie watchers from generations ago might remember, and I can't necessarily pinpoint what sparked that feeling of nostalgia, but this theater is different in its beauty and flair. The theater I was in was decorated to appear as though it was outside, and even had "stars" on the ceiling that delicately shined during the movie. If you're worried that all this would distract you from the most important part of a theater, which is the movie, don't worry. It's pulled off well. Another unique thing about this theater is there is a waitress in your theater to take food orders, which are delivered during the movie. That was very interesting, and we got the chicken strips, nachos and a pizza. While it wasn't the best food I've ever had, it sure beats popcorn. This place is just downright charming. I'm a major fan after just one visit! ... and that's saying something, because truth be told, I'm not much of a movie-goer. I have a terribly short attention span, and generally speaking, there are many number of ways I'd rather spend my time than sitting still and watching a movie. Don't get me wrong, I like movies, but I'm no buff and movie theaters really aren't my thing, I guess. The Avalon is right by my house, so when our small and beyond-stoked about seeing Jurassic World group was trying to make the super-serious decision as to where to see the flick, the Avalon came up as a possible location. They don't necessarily announce their "next-ups" in super-timely manner, so I called the week before to confirm that they'd be showing it. They were, so the Avalon it was! And the Avalon, you guys... an atmospheric theater indeed! Starlights on the ceiling, supercool old architecture, a lovely little bar/lounge serving food and drinks, servers rocking it during the film that will bring you food and drinks, old-timey adverts prior to the movies... charming charming charming charming charming. The Avalon Theater is hands down my favorite venue to see a movie on the big screen these days. Besides being just a short walk from my home, I love the historic Avalon for its comfortable and spacious seating in the main theater, with an attentive waitstaff serving up food and drinks. The food is good and they offer a full service bar with a variety of beer on tap. The Avalon typically has only two movies playing. A big high budget movie in the main theater and another movie in the smaller, back theater. I personally try to avoid seeing movies in the smaller theater. Every month, The Avalon will play a few old movies in the main theater for only $5. One movie is hosted by Lakefront Brewery's tap takeover events. Another monthly classic movie night is hosted by Milwaukee Record. Always a good turnout at these events and it is a fun atmosphere. They play tons of old school horror movies during October and holiday movies in December for only $5 too! The seating is first come, first serve, but you can purchase your tickets online at The Avalon website with a $1/ticket surcharge. The seats are comfortable and spaced out nicely, so you have plenty of room to stretch out or comfortably enjoy your meal. The Avalon Theater has steadily improved since it reopened several years ago. The theater has a lot going for it and with a few changes and improvements could easily reach five stars. The main auditorium is beautiful. The owners clearly invested a lot of thought and effort into the renovation before the Avalon reopened several years back. I love the stars on the ceiling and the architectural accents. Seats are wide and extremely comfortable. The side theater is smaller and looks more like a mall multiplex, but has the same comfortable seats. The big issue with the side theater is that you get some bleed-through from the main auditorium if there is an action film showing there. For example, tonight we heard/felt every explosion in MIB playing next door. The Avalon has changed their in-theater menu a couple times since reopening, but there consistently have been some good selections, along with beer, wine and cocktails. Milwaukee Film members get a discount on Avalon tickets which works perfectly with the many special showings at the Avalon throughout the year. read more

Milwaukee has become one of the best cities in the Midwest to see a movie. This location was the first theater in the city to show "talkies" when they opened back during Prohibition. Today you can get a drink in their beautiful little lounge, totally legally. Back in the early 20th century, most Americans didn't travel far from where they lived, and instead imagined the rest of the world fancifully via movies. Movie theaters evoked the stereotyped fantasies of exotic distant places and we can travel back to those times at places like the Oriental and now here. The theme of this beautifully restored movie theater is Spain at night, in the main theater you sit beneath a twinkling roof of stars. They've got some kinks to iron out, we went during the most recent polar vortex and their furnace was out, but right on entry they promised that if it was too cold, we could come back out front and get free passes to come back. Since we were watching the last of the Hobbit movies (takes place on cold hill tops) it was actually fitting to watch the movie in our winter coats, and since we went to a weekday afternoon showing, there were only four of us total so I kept my winter hat (and gloves) on without blocking anyone's view. The heat wasn't working, but the multichannel sound system was calibrated perfectly (important with a special effects movie with lots of violence). The movie and concessions prices aren't higher than the usual soul-less chain mulitplex places, the dinner choices like pizza aren't bad considering you're at a movie theater. The seats aren't retro, they are non-porous (no chance of bed bug infestation) synthetic pseudo-leather, very comfortable big recliners with sliding food trays and cup holders. It's full service, you can get popcorn with real butter at concessions, or get wait service at your seat. They've made going to the movies a classy date setting all over again. This is even better than our previous favorite full service movie theater, the Rosebud, which is under the same ownership. Growing up in Chicago, I used to go to a theater like this on the far North Side that went from old and decrepit, to wrecked and replaced by an ugly modern development in a seeming blink of an eye. Change isn't always progress, and progress isn't always good. If you're visiting from out of town, this theater is an easy trip from downtown, you don't need a cab, take the bus or if it's not polar vortex weather, rent a couple of bicycles. Wow. I can't believe I haven't seen a movie here before. I am a YUGE fan of movies. And super fantastic bonus is seeing a movie in a classic movie house. This place has been beautifully restored and the seating is perfect. Drink and food service? Heck yeah. Plenty of room? Jah. Great neighborhood? Double jah. Cool seats with built in tray tables? You becha. Can't wait to come back to see another flick. Didn't hurt that I saw deadpool here as the movie was freaking amazing. read more
