I was referred to Auto Guys by my regular mechanic for an engine rebuild on my 240SX. I worked with James from start to finish and he was extremely courteous and helpful as we worked through the rebuild as well as other repairs including the clutch and power steering lines. He quoted the repairs accurately and stayed on track with the promised timeline. I've returned a couple times to double check some noises but they turned out to be unrelated to the engine rebuild (it was loose exhaust lines) and James did not charge me anything for the two inspections. I don't have enough positive things to say about this place. This is the only place I will take my vehicle for as long as we both shall live. They are trustworthy and honest. I brought my car in for squeaky brakes. Was told that I'd need the rotors resurfaced to stop the squeak but that my brakes were fine and the car was safe to drive. If I could live with the squeak, nothing needed to be done. I wasn't charge anything even after I offered for them taking the time to look at it. I was given a print out of a recall on airbags and instructed to take it to the dealership where they resolve it at no charge. Great guys, I highly recommend. read more

I would definitely recommend Auto Guys in San Marcos. I Googled 'Best car repair shops in my area' and Auto Guys came up first, and for good reasons. I had replaced a headlight bulb on my car (with no luck), took it then to AG, and James stopped what he was doing to help me out. He found and fixed my mistake after a few minutes and didn't charge me. Not long after I left, my 'Check Charging System' light went on unexpectedly. I called James to ask him if I could return so he could look at it and he said to come on back. I did and he quickly determined that my alternator had just quit on me. It being too late in the day to fix the problem, he said to return the next morning. Not only did he fix the problem, but performed a 100,000 mile checkup my car needed. Both repairs were very reasonably priced. I had inquired earlier about the cost of a 100K service from a local dealership and was shocked. James saved me hundreds of dollars from what I would have paid had I gone there. Quick, efficient, friendly, fair. These qualities always get my business. read more

SO HONEST!! We have been bringing our cars to Auto Guys since we moved to Lake San Marcos in '09 and have NEVER had a bad experience. Today we brought our son's 2009 Yaris in for a 30,000 mike check up. We had no idea when the last time we had anything checked up on the car, except oil change and new tires, and the 'check engine' light had been coming on so we brought it in. Don checked our service records for the Yaris and said the last time we had brought it in was 4 years ago for a 30,000 check BUT that was only 5,000 miles ago (he had been away at college without it) so we shouldn't worry unless there was something specific my son had noticed was wrong. This was just another in a long line of great dealings with them. On another car, we were told by Brake Stop that our Prius Prime needed new brakes and quoted $1200!! This was when we brought it in to get its oil changed and didn't ask for a break inspection. We got a 2nd opinion from Auto Guys who told us we had more than 30% left on the pads, and just the pads would be needing replacing. Over 14 years, out Jetta, Yaris, Forester and Volvo have been in great hand with the technicians at Auto Guy's. On my way to work, the check engine came light came on in my car followed by a weird lag as the car accelerated up the hill. Now usually I would have just taken it directly to my mechanic down in SD but I was 45 minutes away from him and didn't want to risk a break down in case it was something serious. My friend and his wife have been going to Auto Guys for some time and had raving reviews for them. So I called them up and they told me to bring the car right over. They were able to take my car in right away and diagnosed the issue within 20 minutes. The mechanic thoroughly explained everything and even showed me charts, etc. He was great! I greenlit their service and my car was done in a couple of hours---at a fair price too! While I was there, I ended up getting a synthetic oil, high mileage oil change too. For $45, it was MUCH more affordable than other spots. I recommend them! read more

I have to update my last review. I've switched mechanics. Why? I brought my car in about 6 weeks ago to have my windshield wiper and the wiper arm fixed. Something hit my wiper while I was driving along the 15, broke my wiper, and bent the arm. I showed the mechanic the problem. Two hours later, the car was ready. I had something else fixed too, so in all fairness, it did not take them two hours to fix my wiper. I paid for it and went out to my car. Yes, the wiper blade was replaced but the arm was still bent. I knew the arm just had to be lowered somehow. So, back in the office to tell the mechanic what I saw. He told me he saw it too and it would be an additional 38.50 to open the area up to take a look. Huh? This is why I brought the car in. You noticed it when I pointed it out to you 2 hours ago. I couldn't leave the car any longer and honestly, I was disappointed that it wasn't fixed the first time. Last month, I took my car to another mechanic for a wheel alignment since they place couldn't do it. I asked them how much it would be for them to fix the wiper arm and they did it for free. It was THREE TURNS OF A WRENCH. Yes, that's it. I decided to not return to this place anymore. read more

I went to the Auto Guys for the first time today and boy they did not disappoint! First, the customer service was excellent. Secondly, the price for the oil change was $10 cheaper than my mechanic and Jiffy Lube. And third, I only waited 20 minutes. I've been trying to get my oil changed for over a week. Jiffy Lube doesn't carry basic 1030 oil, they told me they couldn't get the plates off of the bottom of my car to do an oil change because the bolts were level with the plates, then the dipstick broke! Auto Guys is right behind Jiffy Lube. Do not go to Jiffy Lube! I need to get my car smogged and have other work to get done - can't wait to go back to Auto Guys! The gentleman who helped me, Wesley, also gave me some very good car maintenance advice. Also, they didn't say thing about the issue with the dipstick and they didn't say anything about the plates being bolted onto the point where they could not remove them. Thank you Auto Guys! Went here for multiple issues for my Jeep Cherokee. I kept having to put money in that car, finally I had the last straw. I told one of the workers I was going to trade it in after yet another issue, and he suggested that I should as well, as it would only be more issues down the road with the mileage and Jeep brand as it was. Needed an oil change and tire rotation on a Saturday. Found this spot in Yelp and when I called they said oil changes are first come first serve. On Saturdays it gets busy and they close early so they recommended coming in early. He took my information down and my car was up. With only two guys working it took a little over 30 mins but it was still quick. Tire rotation was free no charge with my synthetic oil change. The prices are great! I even signed up for the email reminders and they will send you deal alerts. It was a great experience I'll will be back for my future automotive needs. Pro Tip: my GPS gave me problems but if you are coming off the 78E the shop is on the left so just make a U-Turn at Grand. It is across the street from Smart and Final. Pro Tip 2: free tire rotation just ask for it. Pro Tip 3: oil changes first come first serve. read more

The Auto Guys have been my oil change saviors for Years! I live in coastal Oceanside. I used to work down in Mission Valley and Gaslamp for my two jobs. I was racking up hundreds of miles on my Sentra each week. I would literally be visiting these guys every 6 weeks for another oil change! They were always speedy and cordial and that kept me coming back to them, All the way down in San Marcos. Well, I realized today that I have never written a review on them and the superiority of customer service and auto service they have given to my family and our cars. Yesterday my husband and I took our two cars in for routine oil changes, and brake replacements that we were actually kind of behind on with the maintenance. They took care of all of the issues and were done very quickly! However, We had to postpone our pick up til today for personal reasons. They were exceptionally understanding! We came back to pick up the second car this afternoon and not only did they handle the brake issues we were concerned about, but they had washed my car for me also! I am no mechanic by trade but I know more than the average bear. Back story... my radiator burst a block away from Auto Guys. In an effort to avoid a pricey tow home, I called and was assured that the repair could be made same day. Once at the shop, the technician told me that the repair would be $677. I asked how much the radiator would cost and he said $450 because it was a special order. I called AutoZone down the street and they had the radiator for $189.99 in stock (not a special order). The technician then told me that if I got the radiator he would do the work. Magically, all of a sudden, he wasn't going to be able to get the repair done until the next day once he learned he wasn't going to extort me for an extra $270. Ended up towing the truck home for $85, buying the radiator from $189.99, and replacing it myself in under 2 hours. I don't use mechanics often so I don't often run into the mechanics-are-crooks scenario. However, here's the proof. After the place I went to for years left town, I was on a mission to find a new place I could trust, and I landed here after a lot of research. Don is my main contact there, but all the guys are cool. When they fix something, they show you the parts they replaced and show you why. When you get an oil change, they will tell you what kind of maintenance you should think about at a later date (rather than telling you that you have a ton of problems that need to be fixed NOW like other places), and when they do think something needs to be fixed, they prioritize what you should do first, and how to do it on a budget if you need to. I really trust these guys and will continue to take my truck there as long as they are around. I don't know how well these guys can repair a car, but they're honest and that is rare in automobile repair shops. I brought my car in and was told by them that I had "nothing to worry about"! I left my car with them while they checked out a problem and where most shops would have given me a laundry list of problems that must be fixed immediately, they told me that nothing deserved immediate attention, and even told me where to find parts for the best price. Since they didn't charge me, I don't know what their prices are like. But I'd be willing to pay more knowing their honest. read more

I had a wonderful experience with the Auto Guys. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram van that had a terrible squeak, squeal, metal on metal sound coming from my driver's side tire area. I'd had a brake job done a year ago. I had the tie rod, control arm thing, bearings and rotors replaced in July of this year. Those jobs were done by 2 different individuals who could not find out where that awful noise was coming from. The Auto Guys took my tire off and the brake shoe and showed me a piece of metal that was too small for the size van I have. They also thought the part may not have been an original part that was necessary for my big van. They replaced the part (the brake was rubbing on this cheaper, non-genuine plate) and that was all it took to fix this horrible noise I was hearing for the past 2 years! They also found that a spring on the rear brake had been installed upside down and remedied that. Wesley will great you with a smile and listen patiently while you tell him what is wrong with your vehicle. He will keep you informed of the progress as well. I could not be happier with my service at their establishment. And, the price was super reasonable. I'm recommending these guys to everyone who asks me for a good mechanic. They were great!! PS: to the Yelp reviewer guy who said he couldn't get them to do an oil change; while I was waiting for my van to get fixed, I personally saw 3 customers come in and get their oil changed very quickly. read more

This is a very reasonable price! I brought in my own oil (synthetic) & filter & they only charged me $10 bucks which was just for labor. As to compare $45 using their own synthetic oil and labor. Jiffy Lube next door is a rip, $45 even if I bring in my own oil! There was a 1.5 hour wait but it didn't bother me, just went somewhere to eat and when I got back it was finished. The only thing I didn't care for was, they weren't very friendly. I don't know if it's because I look young or what. No one told me what to do when I got there, & no one was in the office. Finally someone came just told me to park and took my keys. After the oil change was over, he just gave me a sheet to sign and that's it. I was reading other reviews and some people said they told them what they need to get done to their cars in the near future...they didn't tell me anything. It might be because nothing is probably wrong or they gave me the sheet that tells you what they did to the car. I just think they need to be more friendlier...the workers were way friendlier to a guy that came in after me. Anyways, I will come back again! read more
