I took my mother's 1998 Chevy Lumina in because her air wasn't blowing cold. After Firestone insisted she needed a compressor, I found this place and I'm glad I did. My husband is a "car guy" in every sense of the word but on the occasions when we have to take the cars in because it requires a tool he doesn't happen to have, he is savvy enough to know whether the repair guy is legit. We started going to Auto Cool several years ago even though it is a bit of a distance from us. The thing I most appreciate is that they will often offer you a less expensive "temporary " fix if it is possible and that is greatly appreciated if we are having a lean month. **LONG REVIEW ALERT, BUT VERY NECESSARY** What is it these days with businesses thinking that you don't have other choices anymore? WE DO! I guess they are also unaware that spreading the word now travels MUCH further. I dunno..but I YELP A LOT and LOUDLY, especially when I'm treated poorly. I should have listened to my gut instinct when I called Auto Cool to try scheduling an appointment to get my AC checked. The person who answered the phone was not very friendly, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt..maybe this guy is just having a bad day. Decided to take my car in yesterday to have them do their "visual inspection" which the guy "Brad" did and said he didn't see anything wrong with my AC. Remember this name "Brad" as you'll see later. I tried explaining that I know my A/C and it's not even close to cooling as it should. He recommended that I bring it back maybe later in the day, so he could take a look then because heat can change the verdict. Anyway, agreed that I might do that but I didn't get around to doing it. However, I drove my car around in the heat and it still wasn't cooling properly. I decided to go back today and when I arrived at the front desk there was this "Brad" character again. He is the white/gray haired older man in the office. I greet him with "Hello, I'm back again today." (Smiling) "Back, that means nothing to me." (Eyes never looked at me) "I was just here yesterday morning. My name is R*****" Interrupting me mid-sentence "What is your last name" (Still hasn't looked at me) I spelled out my last name "M------" "Ok, you were here yesterday and I told you your car was working fine" (Still hasn't looked at me) "OK, I'm telling you it's not working fine, especially during the heat of the day" "It was blowing cold yesterday" (Still hasn't looked at me) "Listen, it's not working as it should. Can you repair it? What is your schedule looking like today to service it?" "I don't know. I can't give you a clue. You can leave it here? (Still no eye contact) "No, I don't think I'll be leaving my car with you EVER" "OK, that's fine with me." I wish I could add audio so everyone can get the full experience of how brash this "Brad" character is. Talking about lack of professionalism and you've been in business how long? He has a terrible disposition. After hearing the voice in person "Brad" was the person who answered the phone when I tried to call initially to schedule an appointment. I should have taken heed. I notice that Auto Cool likes to chime in and rebuttal negative reviews. Do yourselves a favor and save your keystrokes. There isn't an excuse for "Brad's" behavior and nothing can justify the rudeness that I experienced. After reviewing their website, Brad is a partner in the business. If the owner Fred wants continued business, I'd highly recommend an immediate change in partners unless he shares the same principles as Brad. I will be letting EVERYONE I know and hopefully I can reach people I don't know to avoid this location like the plague. The vibe I experienced was some backwards/sideways thinking in this establishment. I am happy to take my money elsewhere because I don't have to put up with BS! I stopped in here over the Summer after hearing from a friend they did good work for him. I did A/C work one summer about 15 years ago and am a shadetree mechanic, so I had already diagnosed my problem, a leaking high pressure valve. There was no question about it, but Lexus wanted to sell me the entire line, for about $290 more than just a valve. So I stopped in to just buy a replacement valve, figuring it'd be easy and quick. Nope. The salesman immediately began dodging my questions and insisting I bring it in to let them do 'their' diagnostics on it, condemning my own procedure and suggesting I didn't know what I was doing. He refused to even look at the valve I had or try finding a replacement one on the shelf. But even worse, he really tried to make me feel like a complete idiot. I have a speech impairment, not bad mind you, but sometimes people just assume I have a severe mental retardation when I talk to them. He lived up to that assumption well, berating me, cutting me off mid speech, and continually ignoring my requests, all the while suggesting I had no clue what I was doing and they should take over and fix it for me. If I wanted to pay someone to tell me what I already know and be treated like crap in the meantime, I would have said so. I went elsewhere after doing a google search and found a little hole in the wall place that gladly sold me a valve for $6, and thanked me for my business. Auto Cool can burn in Hell. read more

Horrible experience. My AC was blowing, but not cold. Brought my car in, they replaced the fuse box, picked car up a couple days later. The next morning on my way to work, the ac stops working completely. Not blowing at all and the knob kept getting stuck. Never had this problem BEFORE I took my car to Auto cool. We bring it back the next day, and they tell me this is a new, completely unrelated problem AND they want $400 more to fix it. They took no responsibility for the situations at all. I can understand if it WAS completely unrelated issue, but the knob not working, after 14 years of working perfectly fine, seems Quite related to whatever they did to my car. DONT GO TO THIS SHOP!!! Unless you dont know nothing about cars and you want to get your pockets emptied! They have the "best reputable shop" around but the service is horrible. I took my car to the shop today (20/03/2014) to put freon in the a/c system and they did the vacuum and filling. They told me that there was something wrong with wiring and that they didn't have the wiring diagram. They let me go like that after charging me $125.00. I called them an hour later and asked them how much will they charge me to change a switch sensor that is on top of the dryer and re-cycle the freon that they put in an hour ago... They said that they wanted to charge $117.00 more!!! What ??? Bravo!!!! What a great service and knowledge!!! read more

My Yukon was blowing cool air but not COLD air for being as new as it was, so I took it to Auto Cool for a diagnostic. The AC was not out but i just wanted to know why. The way the repair manager called to explain it after approving the $53 check was elusive so I asked, what if they look for a leak and there isn't one? To which he responded, "with this car, I can guarantee you your condenser is cracked." His voice seemed flustered Bc he kept saying my condenser WAS cracked but I asked how he knew without even checking- a logical question. I asked how it was still cool air and thinking they're the professionals they'd let me know if it was a quick top off/charge and he immediately snapped it was my condenser. I said ok to the repair. Only to find out later this is a known problem for this make and model and they're likely capitalizing on it. I wish they would have said, "your air is not out yet, but being in the industry and seeing so many of these- there's a recall/extended warranty on your condenser go to GMC." Obviously, I see why making $800 is easier to just have them "fix" it (which, who knows if it was even cracked- maybe they love the opportunity to get the car to just say it's cracked knowing most people wouldn't check). My husband picked up the car and the mechanic admit to him how popular this repair is and how we ''may be able to get reimbursed by GMC" eluding to the known defect of the condenser. I get the business. I just wish there was more transparency. One google search will show you hundreds of issues with the condenser. Who knows if anything was really wrong or if they were taking advantage. FYI: if you have this same car and issue GMC WILL REPAIR IT FREE FOR YOU. AND THEY HAVE EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY TO DO SO- call before going to a shop. All I'm saying is, it would've been a lot nicer if the professional said: we see this a lot. It's a problem with your make and model- this isn't an isolated case. I could have googled there and called a few dealerships to get the repair done for free. I understand I walked into auto cool and could have left, but it's still the way it was handled. I would say to someone with a known defect after seeing dozens- but I also see why it's easier to just get an easy $800. I'm more annoyed more than anything. They weren't deceitful just not forthcoming given the information they had. The disclosure would have left more of an effect and I likely would have remembered their honesty and shared with others that they're "honest mechanics" vs the quick buck. read more

Recently my AC went out again. Took it back up there and was out the door in under 40 mins. A relay went out, cost $50 to replace, no fuss at all. Last time was not a fluke, these guys are legit. If you have AC or Heat issues take it straight there. I have used this shop for A/C repairs several times over the years. Yesterday they replaced the blower motor in my Kia which involved removal of the dash. As always, they correctly diagnosed the problem (THE most important part of a successful repair) then fixed it for less than the estimated price! In 2014, my 1993 Camry air conditioning went out. I figured it would be pretty expensive, especially if the compressor was shot. They checked it out and found leaks in the system. They also found that the compressor was still working. I was almost right--the estimate was about $1,000, but reasonable. I decided to fix it. They replaced the evaporator, a couple of valves, and dryer. They also converted it to R134. It worked great. All in all, I figure the car's life was extended indefinitely. It's one of the best cars ever made, my opinion. If I need AC work again I will be back. read more

GO TO EXPRESS OIL CHANGE BEFORE THIS PLACE!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME!! The wait was way too long and they didn't even perform a diagnostic. Their "quote" ranged from 40$ to 95$ for a diagnostic, which could take up to 5 hours?! I had Express Oil change on south Cobb run a quicker and less expensive diagnostic. I called around to compare prices and I am very disappointed with AutoCool's quote. Express Oil Change will replace an A/C compressor for hundred less than what AutoCool charges. read more

I had an extremely positive experience with Auto Cool. My wife's Honda Accord's a/c went out in the middle of June. Needless to say, she wasn't very happy. I took her car to the dealership and a few other general mechanics. Both wanted an insane amount of money to fix her a/c. I found Auto Cool after reading several good reviews on kudzu.com. Turns out they were able to fix the problem for several hundred dollars less than the other places. Additional bonus, they were able to fix the a/c the same day I took the car in. I went here because they are right around the corner from where I live and also next to Rev Coffee. It wasn't fast, but the service was great... it wasn't cheap, but they didn't overcharge either. All they do is AC and I'm assuming heat as well. They have been in business a long time and I believe they will continue that way. I would definitely come back in the future. Had some intermittent problems with my 2000 Civic AC, and had tried replacing a few parts on my own with no improvement. This is when I would normally turn to the dealer's service department for help, but I thought Auto Cool would be a good choice since AC is their specialty. They diagnosed a worn compressor clutch and made an adjustment, saving a lot of expense compared to a new compressor. I still had some issues on hot days so I let them take another look, and they found that the motor on the condenser fan - a part I had recently replaced - actually turned the wrong way and was causing airflow problems. They reversed the wires on the fan motor and everything works great...and no charge for the fan repair. It's nice to find a shop that can actually diagnose a problem rather than throwing parts at it - I highly recommend Auto Cool. read more

I would give 10 stars but cannot! This is the second time that I've used this business for Auto AC repairs... and it was on a good friends recommendation! These guys are the "gold standard" of ac repairs for your auto... My 2004 VW GTI stopped cooling last Thursday... I dropped my car off at the night drop off ... Saturday morning at 0725am Brad called and we discussed the problem...the 12 year old compressor had destroyed itself but had not ruined the whole system... he said that it would be $900 to $1000 dollars to replace with new parts. He called again this morning at 0730am and said that my car was ready. I can see my breath in the car it got so cold!! I relocated to the Atlanta area last year and in December began experiencing problems with my '93 Lexus 400 overheating. I'm nowhere near mechanically inclined, so have depended upon finding honest and reliable people to work on my car. Being new and not knowing anyone I turned to Angie's List to see who was close by with favorable reviews. After making an appointment I took my car in and after a quick diagnosis had my radiator pressurized for leaks (none found). All that was needed was some coolant and water. With it being somewhat their off season the shop was not overextended so I had the additional pleasure of visiting with owner Fred Shope. Great guy and gave me the impression he truly cares about his customers' needs. I drove away very satisfied as my car was repaired quickly for a fair price. Because of this positive experience I've taken my car back twice for different repair needs. Each time the problem was correctly diagnosed, repaired, and charged a fair price. Not to drag this on, but I've got to add this final point. I had moved here last year in my new job but have just recently sold my home in Arizona and now have my family and additional autos here. Our '02 Tahoe has been driving us crazy with an AC unit that had a mind of its own. Works great most days but then stops blowing cold air. As I mentioned, I find honest and reliable people to work on my cars, and my AZ guy is a great mechanic but could never quite put his finger on how to correct our AC problem. Last week (July 4th 2012) we had enough of it so I called Auto Cool. I took it in early on a Saturday (their web site says they're open M-F) and they got to it within a reasonable time period (they were jammed due to the 100+ degree days that week). I have been dealing with Auto Cool since 1988. Custom cooling work, work on newer cars, work on old cars (35 years plus), rebuilt dash AC's on two motor homes, work most places will not even touch. Recently I took a 40 year old restored FMC motor coach to them so that they could rebuild the two Thermo King dash type units used for cooling when driving. These systems were 40 years old and complex. I was pleased they would even consider taking the job. After a very thorough diagnosis, I got a quote range from them I thought was reasonable. When I went back to pick up the motor coach, the AC in my 2003 Mercury Sable station wagon went out, compressor and clutch. I was glad I was on my way to Auto Cool, so I had them fix it while I did other business in Atlanta. Over the years, I have spent $1,000's of dollars at Auto Cool. The day I picked up my FMC and Sable, almost $6,000. Auto Cool is an auto services vendor that I trust totally to do a great job and stand behind their work. Beware!!! I had 4k worth of work on m y vehicle in August 2012 including a new compressor for a rear air unit. I started having a metal grinding noise coming from the engine 2 weeks back. I took my vehicle to my local mechanic and he ran the diagnostics with no issues. They investigated further and found the new compressor was loose and defective. I took it back to Auto Cool and explained the situation. I was completely ignored and told they did not care what another mechanic had found. I asked if they would speak on the phone with my mechanic to explain the issue and the owner became very irate and aggressive. I was then assaulted verbally (profanity) and physically and told they would not repair any of their work. My wife witnessed the entire event and talked me into leaving before the incident escalated any further. If you want to be harrassed and scammed then by all means use Auto Cool. I learned a valuable lesson regarding doing my home work better regarding any service. It seems to be a familiar theme reading the past reviews. read more

Soooooo, I've literally been without AC in my car for almost two years because I refused to pay the astronomical amount that the Goodyear on Cobb Parkway stated I had to pay to get a new compressor (they, without a doubt, told me that was the issue)...anywhoo, the heat in the ATL had definitely gotten unbearable the last few weeks and I'd heard great things about Auto Cool and that they really "dig deep" in trying to determine the customer's issue...from what I read on their website, usually when told you need a $1500 compressor, that that is usually NOT the issue and could potentially be something less crucial!! Low and behold, I took my car to Auto Cool this past Monday and I did NOT need a new compressor and it ended up ONLY being a circuit issue which ONLY set me back $275...of course, I was doing heel kicks...you guys totally ROCK and extra KUDOS to Brad that helped me out every step of the way...now I'm cruising in my Beetle with the AC on full blast...!! read more

Don't pay any attention to the 1 star reviews listed here. The simple fact is that some people should recognize their limitations and leave the job to the professionals. And professional is just what the guys at Auto Cool are. First they were actually willing to work on my pre 1993 r12 system without automatically insisting that it would have to be converted to r134. NOBODY else I found in Atlanta would even touch the system without demanding that it be converted. And the fact that they were willing to work on my r12 system without converting it is a very good thing, because it turns out that the compressor was fine, the system was fully charged and there were no leaks. The problem actually ended up being in the car's computer system. Again MOST mechanics would have insisted that the entire computer unit be replaced costing me a small fortune. The nice gents at Auto Cool were able to modify my existing system instead so that I could have my AC back with a minimum of cost to me. These guys know their stuff, and they are very happy to work with you and explain the process as they go as well. They didn't sucker punch me with hidden charges and they didn't insist on costly repairs I didn't need. If your AC system needs repair, especially if you have an older r12 system, then Auto Cool is definitely the best place in Atlanta to take it. read more

When you look at the top of the site it says we have some reviews but if you look lower on the page you can see in small letters the option see filtered reviews. To get to these hidden reviews you have to type in a couple of illegible words, and then it may let you continue on and read the rest of our reviews. At this point you will see that we have mant more reviews that are positive. We are an honest, hard working small business that specializes in the diagnoses and repair of car air conditioning, heater and radiator problems. We always give estimates before we spend any money and try our best to help the customer understand any repairs we do. We repair thousands of cars a year (hundreds a week in the summer) and after 30 years in business have tens of thousands of happy customers. We do not think this site treats our reviews fairly because potential customers will see mostly the bad and without extra work not know that the good reviews exist. While I know we are not perfect, we do a very good job. We repair about 3700 cars a year and have only a few bad reviews, so we must be doing something right. read more

Not really happy with these folks as they tried to sell me a repair job that ended up costing me (at a much better shop) about $300 LESS at another place. There are no cheap AC jobs. Let me just say that first, but when I initially went there, they told me it was just a leak and for the low, low price of $105 they could refill it for me.. OK so I did that. Then as I was paying for it, they said "Dont use the AC at stoplights because there is another leak and you need $550 more in repairs". So, I was going out of town and figured at least the $100 will buy me a few weeks to figure out if that was real or not. Not so, the $100 of freon leaked out in 5 minutes. Basically as soon as I drove away. It was like throwing $100 out the window. WTF these people charged me that money for a "temp fix" I'll never know. I went back two weeks later and told them that I expected a credit of $105 on my bill if they did the repair, because obviously they would have to recharge it, and they said "too bad, so sad". Screw these people. I got it fixed by much better folks for much less $$. Not happy with REV Coffee either for saying they were good. read more

Took my 73 corvette in to evaluate some inconsistency issues with the AC and problematic high air flow. Brad was able to get it in the shop and checked out within an hour. He was able to fully explain the issues and diagnose the problem, which was a huge relief to me considering the age of the car and the different modifications made over the years. The repairs were done quite quickly and certainly cheaper than I expected to have to pay for all the work done and my peace of mind. I withheld my review for two years because I wanted to ensure that my repair was done correctly and holds up to the test of time. My long-time mechanic stated that I need an entirely new air conditioner and quoted me over $2000. Autocool replaced the system for approximately $1200- and it blows ice cold today, just as it did when the repair was made. Brought my daughter's 2004 Chevy Silverado truck for evaluation of A/C going in and out. Tried to get it fixed elsewhere and was told nothing was wrong, bring it back when it goes out!! This place had the problem diagnosed in 15min after leaving it with them. They even opened early on Sat am due to a line of 5 people waiting. Very satisfied with the service and results.
