That's what my class on How To Publish An E-Book was like, it was useful and fun and bridged boundaries, from the mummy bloggers to the mountaineer to the old Greek dear who wasn't quite sure she was there. Everyone was hungry for information and the SWC obliged with Anna McGuire, a published author and former stalwart of Harper Collins and the publishing game, starting at the basics and rocking on to insider tips, of which there are a metric crap-ton. I liked the classroom. I liked the whiteboard and projector. I even liked the instant coffee and stale Arnotts Assorted biscuits. It was all, idk, nostalgic or something. I took the travel writing course taught by freelance journalist Sue White earlier this year and would absolutely recommend it to anyone. Everything about the Sydney Writer's Centre is super professional - their teachers are all real journalists who specialise in the course area they teach; the classes are small enough that you have plentiful opportunities to learn; and the headquarters are really modern and well-located near Milsons Point station. My course was only a few hundred dollars for four weeks, and gave me the tools to pursue travel writing using tips from an industry professional who was more than happy to share her insider knowledge. The classes focused more on how to go about getting your writing published rather than the craft of writing, but our teacher was happy to answer queries about writing style and we had a workshop during the final class to get feedback on examples of our work. Late last year I signed up for the Creative Writing Course at the Sydney Writer's Centre. Due to other study commitments, I paid for and completed the course through their online program. You are provided with full access to the web portal on their website. Communicate with other writers who are undertaking the course and receive invaluable encouragement, support and constructive feedback. The online course also means that you can study from home, out and about or even in another state! The Sydney Writer's Centre has received much acclaim and employ recognised writers within the industry who have been published. The lectures or "modules" are downloadable and can be listened to on your iPod. Feedback is provided, but I would have preferred an in-depth explanation, rather than a sentence or two. The feedback wasn't always constructive either. However, the written modules provided plenty of information on writing tools and techniques. I also found the examples to be very insightful and helpful. It was great to view other writer's excerpts online (who were undertaking the course at the same time). The course was very overpriced and cost $600. For a six week course completed online, I didn't find the value to be that great as there was little feedback and no face-to-face class time. If, upon completing the course, you are not 100% satisfied the centre will fully refund the cost of the course. read more

I started the online creative writing course and must say I regret doing so and just lost $450. What they don't tell you is that all your assignments has to be shared with everyone in the class, basically complete strangers you might not want to be reading what you are working on. Also when I called and asked why this was not explained prior to subscribing to the course the lady at the writing centre had no answer to this at all more than they just hold that information until you paid. Also I do apologise as I do not want to offend anyone but the recordings are not very nice to listen to, it sounds fake and like the teacher is trying to sell something, I could actually not stand it. Last but not least the teacher is an editor of children's books so unless you are writing children's books you might want to consider doing a course else where read more

After completing newspaper and magazine writing online I have absolutely no experience I could have found online with a quick google search. At $450 I expected a little bit of guidance when it came to assignments, this turned out to be wishful thinking. All replies from the lecturer seemed to be copied and pasted and were kept minimal and not informative at all. I would recommend anyone wanting to undertake any course with the AWC rethink that decision and invest in something more useful. Maybe a magazine subscription and a nice pen.
