Like, "Hmmm I've always wanted to study Ancient Mandarin calligraphy and how to speak in wing-dings, maybe I'll sign up for those next year". Sadly, the courses I have partaken in have been a bit more practical- a Responsible Service of Alcohol refresher, basic Word & Excel, and a car maintenance course that I couldn't finish as I was diagnosed with whooping cough after the first class. But for most courses they offer different levels so you can go onto advanced Ancient Mandarin Calligraphy next time the programme comes out. There are venues scattered all around Sydney but the centre of it all is right in the city.

I love the French and I love their language...and for years i have been struggling to adopt being a faux francophile... but somehow whilst at Alliance I had a small experience of what it would be like to be a native speaker... Once you work out what class you're in...you're off to begin your classes... The groups are very small....and you get wonderful tutelage... all the classes are conducted in French only (WHAT? BUT I CAN'T SPEAK FRENCH!) - but don't worry...you'd be suprised how much you understand with hand gestures.... Alliance is more expensive than most other places but they have a wonderful reputation and excellent teaching standards... it's a really nurturing environment and it's the closes you can get to a l'ecole (school) in Sydney... I signed up and paid for a Thai cooking class with my Dad for his birthday. We had a great time cooking and learning about Thai ingredients. We made traditional and modern dishes that tasted absolutely delectable! All the ingredients and cooking utensils are provided and the lady who runs the class provides you with a copy of the recipe to take home. We now regularly cook from these recipes and everything has an abundance of flavour. The lady who runs the workshop is a little difficult to understand but is very friendly and knows how to cook! She is also very encouraging and tells you a bit about each of the ingredients and where to buy them from. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who has a love of Thai food. There are a lot of ingredients to each recipe but the end result is simply delicious. And yes, you do get to eat everything you got to cook! The 'Italian for beginners level 1' ran for 8 weeks, Thursday evenings 6-8PM ($180). The classes are held at Mosman Public School which is very accessible, plus parking on-site makes it very easy to get to class. My teacher, Valentina was excellent - patient, kind and fun. Overall I really enjoyed the course and I'll be back for Term 1 next year - 'Italian beginners level 2'! Molto bene!

Well organised, and it is always great to flick through their brochures and select a course of two to attend either in the evening or during the weekend; just to get out and about and learn a new skill; and also to interact with likeminded people. Their cooking classes (especially the Thai one) isn't too bad; and it is great to eat the food afterwards; although their prices could be a bit lower and their class sizes could be a bit smaller. Fairly experienced teachers, although you are sometimes better off saving your cash and figuring out some of the topics they teach yourself; especially as a couple of the business related courses (for what they are worth) are actually a little boring, and did not receive much value out of them. An establishment that will continue to remain quite popular among those living in the inner west. Any of their health and fitness courses are also good to do once in a while; especially any of the aqua courses at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre.

That's what my class on How To Publish An E-Book was like, it was useful and fun and bridged boundaries, from the mummy bloggers to the mountaineer to the old Greek dear who wasn't quite sure she was there. Everyone was hungry for information and the SWC obliged with Anna McGuire, a published author and former stalwart of Harper Collins and the publishing game, starting at the basics and rocking on to insider tips, of which there are a metric crap-ton. I liked the classroom. I liked the whiteboard and projector. I even liked the instant coffee and stale Arnotts Assorted biscuits. It was all, idk, nostalgic or something. Like being back at uni only there wasn't going to be a test.

Everything about the Sydney Writer's Centre is super professional - their teachers are all real journalists who specialise in the course area they teach; the classes are small enough that you have plentiful opportunities to learn; and the headquarters are really modern and well-located near Milsons Point station. My course was only a few hundred dollars for four weeks, and gave me the tools to pursue travel writing using tips from an industry professional who was more than happy to share her insider knowledge. The classes focused more on how to go about getting your writing published rather than the craft of writing, but our teacher was happy to answer queries about writing style and we had a workshop during the final class to get feedback on examples of our work. The Centre itself is also really great at keeping in touch with former students via regular e-newsletters and has a very informative, interactive website.
