My experience at Aurora University during my single semester there was extremely disappointing, and I WOULD NOT recommend this school to ANYONE. Housing conditions were unacceptable. My boyfriend lived on the first floor of Jenks Hall and had a severe roach infestation (roaches crawling on the walls, floors, and even inside the microwave). When he contacted the school for help, they sent Orkin, then charged the cost to his tuition instead of taking responsibility for the situation. The campus itself is very small, with the majority of the campus being residence halls, yet around 80% of students are commuters. Despite this, parking is a nightmare. There is nowhere near enough student parking, and I was often forced to park on residential streets nearly a mile away just to get to class. The financial aid office was also very frustrating. I had a scheduled appointment, and the staff member I met with openly admitted she did not know the answers to basic financial questions I asked, stating this was not her "field of expertise." I left with no clarity or help regarding my tuition or aid. Food services were not diverse at all, awful, and repetitive, essentially the same meals every single week (salmon, pork loin, etc.). Bathrooms were rarely clean, there were almost no outlets available anywhere on campus, and the overall environment felt neglected. Despite claiming to be a smoke-free campus, residence halls constantly smelled like weed, so staff clearly did not enforce their own policies. Many staff members were rude and dismissive. Students ran any and all events, which were poorly organized and very unprofessional. Socially, the school felt extremely dead and unwelcoming. I did not make a single meaningful connection during my time there, and the overall atmosphere was sad. Aurora University failed in housing, administration, campus life, and basic student support. This was genuinely the worst educational experience I have ever had. 0/10 -- I do not recommend this school. read more

Not many recent reviews here. I got my BSN here. The school is a smaller private university. My classes were just the right size where you can get to know all of your classmates and professors. However, some of the professors were unprofessional in their teachings, so I'm not sure how they were qualified to teach. There were also magnificent professors that would go out of their way in order to see you succeed. Parking was atrocious before but I'm glad they have a parking garage now. I wished they would have had that when I was in school pre covid. It would have saved me lots of aggravation from finding a parking space. Yeah, there were many times that if you didn't get there early enough then you would be searching for parking in the nearby neighborhoods. They had many lots before but they got filled up way too fast. Cafeteria was very decent. The food they served was good, average quality but a nice variety. The labs for doing your nursing skills were superb. The simulation dummy was very helpful and modern. It was used to help you understand how a real patient would be. The clinical sites they sent us ranged from hospitals to nursing homes to schools. The downside is they would send me to Rockford one day and then Chicago the second day. They should have organized it a lot better. Clinical instructors for the most part were very compassionate and attentive in their guidance. The ATI program they used was worthless and not a very good tool for helping nursing students. That was a waste of money in my opinion. I didn't even use it when studying it for my license. Tuition was expensive for each semester. For the amount of money they charged, they should have brought in the parking garage sooner and better quality food. TERRIBLE!! they WERE good before they got my money. now they are rude and unprofessional. My daughter has major issues understanding her professor because she can't understand her language her English is very hard to understand. They don't help you you are very good ant taking your money. They don't answer the phone when you call. they could care less about you. it's all about the money. VERY SAD!!! Wish I would have known this prior. I really cherished my time here..I went to a large state university before this, and coming here was an incredible experience. The classes were small. The teachers actually got to know their students, and really cared to help them learn. The students all cared for each other. Warm and friendly environment. A great place to go to school. read more

I do not recommend this school the staffs there are very prejudice including admissions. This school seems to be just a mess no one knows what they are doing. Also if you do decide to attend be careful for Lauren Mitchell in enrollment. I do not trust this school one bit. I graduated here so I am biased. I loved this school. This is the place to go to learn, exercise, live, laugh, love, etc... This is not a wild party school if that is what you want. They are well known for their Education program and their Nursing program. Beware, the professors are TOUGH on you and do not show mercy in any way. You have to work hard and you can't miss more than two or three days in a semester. If so you will get docked a letter grade in most classes. Regardless, great school, you'll love it! The professors are very skilled and knowledgeable, and some are nice too. read more

Well, I transferred from another western suburb school to Aurora University to keep the job I had while transferring schools. I do not know if I would make the same decision I made knowing what I know now, but Aurora University definitely has its ups and downs: Pros: Lowest private university tuition in Illinois (still expensive though) No teaching assistants (just lots of adjuncts) Parking (there are plenty of spaces on campus with a cheap parking pass $25 or in the neighborhood without time limits) Technology (AU has pretty modern technologies and has students do in class and online activities) People (the people who attend AU tend to be really friendly and come from a diverse background, it is pretty easy to fit in) Cons: Terrible administration (inflexible, complicated policies that have cost many students to graduate later than they should have and are very out of touch with students) Tons of adjuncts (some are awesome professors others not so much) Suitcase school (everyone goes home on weekends and most of the campus are commuters) Attendance policies (AU requires professors to maintain attendance records- for college? It's an outdated policy that baby's students through) Location/Lack of jobs (do not expect to get a job near campus, there are no jobs close to campus because the campus is in the middle of a neighborhood) Athletic facilities (or lack thereof, they have a small weight room, a tiny cardio room, and gyms. No pool and no real track on campus) Career Services- What career services? Busy work- If you go to AU expect a ton of mindless busy work because professors will not give you anything worth doing. Prejudice Professors- There have been numerous instances of professors giving students of minority race and religion lower grades than their counterparts. College environment - check Solid faculty with real life work experience - check Adult program - check Reasonable tuition - check Great administration - double check I have had nothing bad to say about my experiences at Aurora University. The campus is exactly what I was looking for in regards to atmosphere. Who would have thought that there was a 100+ year university hiding in the historic district of Aurora? I chose to pursue my degree at AU after much searching. I was accepted at many other school, but chose AU for a few very good reasons. 1. AU is a heavy writing school. I enjoy writing (what yalper doesn't?) I feel that a strong attention to written communication is important. 2. Group work. This is not a lecture only school. AU is all about group work. How else are you going to learn how to work with others in your field of study? Sorry to break it to you - a school that teaches you to be a hermit is NOT a good school. AU has a good blend of instructors that teach using a group work model. 3. Adult program with accelerated (8 week) terms. The words accelerated and education usually do not go well together. Though AU again has their stuff together. I have walked away with a good understanding of the topics covered each term and have even used what I've learned right away in my professional life. The school schedule works well with my "schedule". 4. Faculty. Most are adjunct for local universities like DePaul, Benedictine, NIU, etc. Everyone of them has a ton of professional experience behind them. My accounting classes were taught by an accountant from a fortune 500 company. Why pay more tuition at big name local schools when you can get an equally challenging education at AU for much less? Had a math class with a teacher who had no idea what the curriculum was about..he was a compter science masters degree holder. The school said he was a last minute choice...the students banned together and many contacted mrs. Rahn who I believe is the head of the math department... She told our class that someone will oberseve him, that has yet to happen. We are 1/4 through the semester and we are all very confused on how he got this job...kind of upsetting because I had to pay (and work 2 jobs to be able to go here) about 4000 for this class.. I would recommend Waubonsee instead. read more

This school was such a great experience in my life! I had a great time attending and discovering who I am. I don't think any one place has helped better change or impact my life. AU is all about discovering who you are and how you fit into our world to make it better. AU has a beautiful college campus, a decent tuition, reasonably sized dorms( minus Wilkinson) , and a great family like atmosphere. The school is relatively small and not a campus meant for parties or getting crazy like you might at a D1 school, but it still maintains a professional and fun environment. I graduated from AU in 2004 with a Bachelor in Health Science. This school was fantastic. The campus is beautiful, the offices have friendly staff, and the library there is wonderful. I LOVED my professors in all the courses I took. They were knowledgeable, got you involved, and were tough. Tough was important because it made me work for the grades and ensure I was getting a strong education. In addition, I was able to take part in an honors research course several semesters in a row and work on scientific studies on feeding behaviors of North American birds (I was pre-vet at the time, so this opportunity was fabulous). I was also given the opportunity to do stream monitoring studies in the local streams which is rare around here. We were able to present our study results for both the avian research and the stream monitoring research at the Illinois State Academy of Science Annual meetings and our results have been published in peer review journal articles. The research background I received got me an internship at Shedd Aquarium the summer of my graduation. How many undergrads can say they got to do real scientific research and have publications to show for it? This university truly offers a high standard in education. Will they push you? Absolutely. Is the material and curriculum hard? Oh yea. With hard work and dedication, I walked away with an unbelievable education and a true passion for the sciences. AU truly prepared me for my future and taught me a work ethic that helped me become a success in my career. read more

This university was a total waste of money for the Bachelors degree and MBA I received from there. I went to a couple of job interviews and they looked at my resume and said, "where is that", never heard of it! When I went to school there, I knew more about business then some of the instructors did. For example, in my finance class, you would ask the instructor a question about how to do a problem and she didn't know herself and said, why don't you look it up on google. Good thing, I paid $60k to search google. Interns are used and abused by their field sites, people I know have been made to work 7 days a week in some cases. My advice, stay well away, search around, you will find a better institution elsewhere that will cost you the same if not less and you will receive a higher quality education. I attended AU to obtain a B.A. in Psychology. This school was wonderful. Challenging, interesting topic material and Professors you can admire. They supple many resources for you to fulfill your goal in a professional field. Also, I must say attending a private university really attributes to obtaining the individual attention you need. Unless you are commuting this school is NOT worth attending when living on campus. You can't drink even if you are 21. The dorms are small (no kitchen) activities are for grown high school kids. It's not a college environment. It is a dry campus. Authority is so controlling it seems that you can't enjoy the college experience. It seems diverse but it's not.
